Green City Trips
Eco-friendly things to do and places to stay in city travel destinations around the world
Info and Reviews for your Green City Trip to
Singapore
Planning a city trip to Singapore and want to keep it eco-friendly? Here are some ideas and reviews of eco-friendly things
to do and places to stay in Singapore.
Chinatown, Singapore
About Singapore• Singapore has seen a huge change in the last decades,
emerging from third-world to a strong, self-conscious first world country.
• With little land and few natural resources of its own, Singapore – the City in a Garden – has been quite successful integrating environmental needs with urban growth and development.
• As Singapore moves towards a sustainable city plan, more discussions and projects are popping up everywhere.
Singapore + Sustainability
• Trees have been planted along most roads. Recycled sewage, rainwater catchments and desalinated sea water all form part of Singapore’s drinking water supply.
• Electric cars are a common sight, helped by generous subsidies “to do the right thing”.
• There is a “Clean and Green Singapore” campaign that has been going on for over two decades, with regular events, activities and community projects all over the country.
Singapore + Sustainability
• On the not so bright side, look beyond the city-state and you’ll see thousands of container ships parking, plus a horizon dotted with refineries, just off the coast.
• Singapore has been founded from the beginning as a Port of call city, so the shipping industry is very much a part of its history and culture.
• Unfortunately, this affects marine biodiversity greatly and is something Singaporeans are trying to work on preserving.

Gardens By The Bay
Gardens By The Bay
Where: Behind Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
“Gardens by the Bay brings to life NParks’ vision of creating a City in a Garden. The Gardens captures the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical Garden City with the perfect environment in which to live and work. Underlying the concept of Gardens by the Bay are the principles of environmental sustainability. Much effort was made to plan and design for sustainable cycles in energy and water throughout Bay South Garden.” More info
Southern Islands of Singapore
Southern Islands of Singapore
• Singapore has a chain of southern islands, which provide an escape from the bustling city and are proof of surviving biodiversity in Singapore waters.
• The islands offer diving spots of different visibility and wildlife, some have beautiful intertidal zones to spot marine life during low tide.
• Islands open to the public include St. John’s, Lazarus, Pulau Hantu, Kusu, and Sister’s island – the latter about to become Singapore’s first marine protection area.
