The Winter Carnival was started in the year 1977, by the then chief minister of the state Dr. Y. S.

Parmar. The initiative for organizing the festival was mainly taken in order to encourage the

students as well as the youths of the state to express their skills by taking part in various

activities and competitions such as drawing and skiing competitions, classical dance songs and

various plays.

Following are the major events that take place in the winter carnival of Manali.

Carnival Parade: All the participants dress up according to main theme of the carnival. The

parade starts from Hadimba Devi temple and ends at Nehru Park. The winner and the runner up

of the carnival parade is given cash prizes by the chief minister of the state and the judges.

People from various parts of the country as well as youth clubs are eligible to participate in this

parade.

Folk Dance Competition: Participated mainly by the local boys and girls of Manali, the folk

dance competition includes a 15 minutes performance on any of the folk songs of Manali.

Performance is mainly done in teams that should not comprise more than five members. The

winner is declared by the judges after taking in to account various considerations such as co-

ordination of the team members during dance, time taken to complete the performance and many

more.

Fashion Show: This is one of the major attractions for tourists in the carnival. Both male and

female participate in the show. For females it is the Winter Queen contest and for men it is the

Men’s Personality contest. Here, the contestants are evaluated on the basis of their overall

personality. There are three to four rounds that include General Knowledge, dressing sense and

finally the poll of the audience. Once, a contestant passes through all the stages, he or she is

declared as a winner.
