In Maramures, Romania, on the right bank of the river Iza, 22 km of Sighetul Marmatiei, the monastic compound Bârsana is made of wood as well, according to the local tradition. Only Barsana craftsmen are building the compound, under the direct supervision of architect Dorel Cordos. Today you can admire the Maramures gate, the belfry, the church, the summer shire, the house with cells and chapel, the house of the masters, the house of the artists and a more recently arranged museum portraying the Maramures history, culture and civilization ( Mihaela Lica).

Aşezată aproape de malul Izei, în coasta comunei Bârsana, aparţinând de Episcopia Ortodoxă Română a Maramureşului şi Sătmarului, Mănăstirea „Soborul Sfinţilor 12 Apostoli” Bârsana se află la o distanţă de doar 87 de kilometri de Baia Mare, aflându-se la kilometrul 17 al drumului judeţean 186 (Vadu Izei - Bârsana - Strâmtura - Rozavlea - Sălişte – Săcel)
