Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, the finest of its kind in Asia, the largest of the botanical gardens of Sri Lanka, couldn't be better located.

The spice garden to the right of entrance is replete with exotic spices. Cardamom, Coves, Pepper & Vanilla.

The nutmeg tree is any of several species of trees in genus Myristica. The most important commercial species is Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree indigenous to the Banda Islands in the Moluccas (or Spice Islands) of Indonesia. The nutmeg tree is important for two spices derived from the fruit: nutmeg and mace.

No one knew where the spices came from. Marco Polo, the Venetian, returned from his travels between 1271 and 1295 in China and claimed he saw a nutmeg tree in China, but that cannot have been true. It may be true that Marco Polo gave Java its name. He thought that Java and Australia were connected and called them Java Major and Java Minor. These names appear for the first time on a map made by Francesco Rossellini between 1492 and 1493, but this time Java Major refers to Java and Java Minor to Sumatra.

Sri Lanka has a tradition of using it not only as a vegetable, but as staple, in place of rice. The Sinhala name for the jackfruit tree – Baat Gasa – means ‘tree of rice'. Sri Lanka stands first in the world in consuming jackfruit as a vegetable. According to Dr Heenkenda, the country consumes about 25 to 30 per cent of its tender jackfruits as vegetable. This is a very positive step towards local food security. Probably no other country in the world matches this.

The wood of the tree is used for the production of musical instruments.Jackfruit wood is widely used in the manufacture of furniture, doors and windows, and in roof construction. The heartwood is used by Buddhist forest monastics in Southeast Asia as a dye, giving the robes of the monks in those traditions their distinctive light-brown color
