History of the National Park

Mt. Rainier National Park was established on March 2, 1899 as the fifth national park in the United States. The national park, covering 235,612 acres, includes such well-known sites as Paradise, Sunrise at 6,400 feet, the highest point in the park accessible by car, Longmire, Ohanapecosh, Grove of the Patriarchs, Tipsoo Lake, 25 named glaciers, and wildflower carpeted sub-alpine meadows.. Historic landmarks in the national park include Paradise Inn, built in 1916 surrounded by lush fields of wildflowers, and the National Park Inn, featuring their famous blackberry cobbler and the old Longmire general store.
