IONA PREP SERVICE

After months of fundraising and preparation, groups of students traveled to New Orleans and Perú for their respective service trips. Their dedication and hard work changed the lives of many and inspires others to do the same...

IONA PREP TRAVELS TO NEW

ORLEANSMARCH 29 – APRIL 2, 2010

Working with Operation Helping Hands, we were able help a small

part of New Orleans damaged

by Hurricane Katrina…

Getting our supplies ready for the day ahead!

Starting off at one of the houses…

Our group spent four

days working on this home around the

Garden District of

New Orleans

Priming…

…and scraping!

Saying goodbye to a finished house and happy mother!

Starting work on our other

house.

Caulking the outside of the

home!

And more painting at our second house!

Our group met with students from

other Catholic schools from around the country.

We spent the evening with the Brothers in New

Orleans and learned about their own

experiences.

Our home for the week.

The Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, five years later…

Empty lots and vacant homes…

Many houses are still marked from the search and rescues teams after Katrina.

Our new friend thanking us for our work.

St. Raymond’s Catholic School has become the Catholic Charities headquarters for hurricane recovery volunteering.

Much of the school was converted immediately after Hurricane Katrina. There was little time to salvage what was left.

Leaving our hand-print on the wall…

“The Will of God be done in this and everything we undertake” –Bl. Edmund Rice

A Home on the Mountain

We spent several days

building a home for a family that never had

one.

Building doors for their new home!

New walls, a new floor, a new roof… A new home.

Fe y Alegría No. 26

Across the world,

children learn about the life of

Bl. Edmund Rice.

We spent time

speaking with the students

and getting to know

them.

Convent of the Franciscan Sisters of San Jose

The faded convent walls

were covered in graffiti and desperately

needed to be painted.

Sister Josephine

Her message was to work as Christ rather than simply for Christ.

A Home for the Homeless

This couple’s home often sheltered the homeless and was quite crowded.

Rodrigo!

Hogar San Francisco De Asis – Medical Mission

The children helped us wash the dishes and clean up after lunch.

We spent time playing soccer and other games with the children.
