7 Characteristics of Introverts That Marketers Need to Understand

by Marcia YudkinIntrovert Advocate and Marketing Guru

Researchers estimate that introverts make up 25-50 percent of the population.

However, extroverts are the norm in our society.

That makes it easy to overlook and disrespect introverts’ distinctive characteristics.

Here, in brief, are 7 introvert traits that have definite implications in business.

1.Introverts prefer small settings to large ones.

To an introvert, an event with 100 participants is not small. One with 12 or fewer feels most comfortable for them.

Introverts thrive in intimate environments.

2.Introverts dislike small talk.

Introverts prefer to get right to the point and to talk about things that matter.

3.Introverts prefer planning to spontaneity.

Introverts may appear slow or unresponsive because they need to figure things out in their head before thinking or taking action.

4.Introverts place big importance on privacy.

For introverts, what others do with information about them is a big deal.

Introverts are also much more likely than extroverts to control access to themselves.

5.Introverts need solitude and retreat.

Too much social interaction is draining for introverts.

They get their energy back by spending time alone or with just one or two others.

6.Introverts believe words matter.

They don’t speak just to fill up empty time, and what they say is generally what they mean.

7.Introverts dislike pushiness.

You earn the loyalty of introverts by providing information and letting them make decisions on their own schedule.

Wondering how you can apply these points (and others) in your marketing, face-to-face selling and customer service?
