Did you
KNOW?that on the phone, 86% of our communication comes
from our tone and only 14% comes from the words we use?
When face-to-face with someone, our body language makes
up 55% of how we communicate and 38% is from our
tone. This leaves only 7% to the words we actually use.
With that said, imagine how much room this leaves
FOR INTERPRETATION!
1 SMILE – FREQUENTLY!
Send a positive message to your brain before engaging in a conversation. The wider you open your mouth, the better your tone of voice… so show those teeth!
2 USE MORE INFLECTION
Than you would in face-to-face conversations. If you use the same amount of inflection in a phone conversation that you use in a conversation over the counter, you will sound (and be perceived) as monotone and boring
3 STAND UP STRAIGHT
BE
PROUD
4 MAINTAIN
GOOD
EYE CONTACT
5 FOCUS ON THE CALLER
If on the phone, FOCUS ON THE CALLERAvoid distractions or doing a few things at the same time.
6 ASK COMPLETE QUESTIONS
Would there be anything else I can do for you?
Is much BETTER than: “Anything else?”
7 NEVEREAT or DRINK while on the
PHONE
8 SPEAK UP – When you need to
SLOW DOWN – When you need to
FOLLOW THE CALLER’S PACE
TONE plays a very important part in all of our communications with our guests and customers. Whether you are on the phone or face-to-face, the tone will tell them what mood you’re in! This alone is a great reason to pay attention to how we communicate.
TRY IT! It really makes a difference if you SHOW and
SOUND INTERESTED!
