A Marvelous Creation of mankind – PE Foam

All of you must have seen and used a white-colored spongy substance frequently used for packaging items in a box. This is the Closed Cell PE Foam.

• It has a high level of chemical cross linking, as a result of which a semi-rigid product with a fine uniform cell structure is formed which is used in various applications.

• The Closed Cell PE Foam can absorb shocks and vibrations, which is why fragile goods like cups and glasses and bottles are covered in this foam and then transported elsewhere.

• The second property is its resilience against weather and chemicals (splash resistance to oils and fuels). This property enables it to be used as thermal insulator and as mats on kitchen counters and some times in the chemistry lab.

• Its acoustic insulation properties enable it to be used as a filtering device for sounds in sensitive places like hospitals or music recording studios.

• The fourth property is its buoyancy, i.e. ability to stay afloat when submerged in water. This feature is extremely crucial in its use as a life- saving float in a ship or a boat.

• PE Foam is firm in terms of compressibility and very resistant to heat and also, cost effective. The range of densities in which it is available in the market is from 30 to 250 kg/m3 and is offered in a variety of different colors.

• They also have a long life and are durable. The Closed Cell PE Foam is formed in a mould, resulting in a sheet of foam known as a bun.

• The maximum length, width and thickness of a single bun vary depending upon the foam's density.

• It can be cut into sheets of required thickness or fabricated into a particular shape, piece or profile.

• Other uses of the Closed Cell PE Foam include appliances (gaskets, seat cushions and padding in buses, thermal and acoustic insulators), packaging (cushion packaging foam, corner pads, case inserts, display packaging foam), footwear industry (wedge soles, moulded soles, orthotics etc.),

• Electronics (work station mats, mouse pads, shock absorbing mats) and health care (cervical collar, orthopaedic shoes, insoles, exercise mats and orthotic supports).
