My Power Point Story…

B School – 2005 – 2007 : Self assessment of Power point skills

Reality : I was making slide documents !!

Except I did not know this is what they were called !

Corporate presentations however, turned out to be different…

Data Heavy, Excel Table content came to the fore…

Turned out I had many miles to go…

So I shifted styles… from slocuments to slexcels !

Little Realising That There Could Be Method To the Madness….

Till I changed jobs..and suddenly found myself in an unfamiliar place..

Pushed back for my slexcels & slocuments, I realised I had to do something…

Help Was Sought from all quarters..

most importantly, Colleagues…

And I realized that there are …

Presentation Types

That seek to That seek a

Both conform to a few ground rules

• Consistency – – Font Size (Header and body text to have different sizes) – Header and text alignment (use the grid) – Few words (light is faster than sound – ppl read faster than the presenter can speak)

• Image usage – – Impactful – Relevant – << words

• Story telling –

– Set the context – Create a crisis – Show a solution – Deploy it – Demonstrate results – Seek money for scaling up

Quite tough to maintain its figure in city like Gurgaon .

Was not a big success in the car market .

A Sample Pre Presentation Checklist (1/2)

• Understand – what kind of presentation is to be made – what outcome is desired – who are the audience – How much time is available ? – Possible questions from audience – Et cetera

• Plot a story (write it down in longhand if needed) and phrase

answers to possible interjections

• Think of the images required (search takes time and effort)

• Budget time for search, data availability, data analysis and iterations

• Segment presentation into sections – Keep a slide as a breaker between sections

• Consistent font sizes and alignment – Use the grid

• Work smart - copy pasting same elements like headlines retains position on different slides

– Ideally use max 2 fonts

• Real estate usage – Employ 4 boxes / 2 boxes to showcase information

– Reduce text

– Impactful images work better

• Slide ROE : Re use a slide as much as possible !!!
