AUTO-TUNE

What is Auto-Tune ?

If you've ever removed red-eye from a

photograph.

Or used a Spell Checker to Correct an Essay

Then you know how computer software can... well, "enhance" your

raw material and Life.

It is actually a brand name - owned by Antares, a

company based "a stone's throw" from Silicon

Valley in California - and there are plenty of

competing products that do a similar job.

First Appearance

Auto-Tune was used to produce the prominent

altered vocal effect on Cher's "Believe",

recorded

in 1998, the first major hit song to employ the

software for this purpose. When first

interviewed about this, the sound engineers

claimed that they had used a vocoder, in what

Sound on Sound perceived as an attempt to

preserve a trade secret.

How To Auto Tune?

Hardware

Hardware

Software

The Core Auto Tune Software.

AutoTune Evo

Audacity Plug-in

GarageBand

iPhone app (I am T-Pain)

All of them require

the user to know

what key they were

(supposed to be)

singing in.

Not This Key!!

Its Music key

In music a key is the major or minor scale around which a piece of music

revolves. A song in a major key is based on a major scale. A song in a minor key

is based on a minor scale.

The software then scans their vocals, finds any notes that

don't adhere to that scale and pulls them back to the

"correct" pitch

It's pretty much used in 99% of

recorded music now

Artists Using Auto-tune list too long to be Displayed.

CriticismOpponents of the plug-in argue Auto-Tune has a

pervasive negative effect on society's

perception and consumption of music.

Cant Sing!

Cant hold a note!

But I am Rich!

Thanks to Auto-tune…

We now love to listen auto-tuned robotic sound other

than a PURE human vocal. The dedicated artists

preventing autotune and still giving their hard to get back

the music industry on track..

Artist Jay-Z released a song D.O.A.

(Death Of Autotune) against this

technology.

In the End…

Enjoy Music.

Feel It.

Music is like a time-machine.
