What is a category?

• A type, or a group of things having some features that are the same– Cambridge Dictionary

• e.g. there are three categories of accommodation – standard, executive, and deluxe

Why are categories important in purchasing?

• Filter the available suppliers to a more relevant and manageable pool• Buyer selection criteria and purchasing process

may vary by category– e.g a different process of selection questions may be

used for engineering equipment purchases when compared with service purchases such as marketing

• Tracking and analysis of spend activities by category

• Select the category of goods and services that most accurately reflects your needs• Over 10,000 categories are available across

products and services• Categories are organised into hierarchies

Search broad - discovery

• When looking for a range of suppliers across a broad category of requirements – consider selecting a general term – e.g. Fruit, vegetables and related products

• This will return suppliers that can provide any type of fruit, or vegetable or similar product

• Some of these suppliers may provide a wide range of products and others may provide only one

• This gives the buyer a broad overview of the market

Search narrow - focussed

• When looking for a range of suppliers for a specific narrow requirement – consider selecting a tightly worded requirement– e.g. carrot

• This will return only those suppliers who have included carrot on their list of products and services they can provide

• Some of these suppliers may provide a wide range of products, but always including “carrot”, and others may provide only one product which is “carrot”.

• This provides the buyer with a deep view of the supply chain for a specific product or service of interest

• Try to think of a more general wording and look for that in the available categories
