Initial Research

• Fallen leaves, considered "landscape waste" are:– left to form mulch– OR gathered and decomposed to create compost– OR collected with other landscape waste and

garbage• takes up valuable landfill space• removes nutrients from the soil• create greenhouse gases when burning

• Why not use this abundant resource to substitute materials and create cheaper, greener products?

25

Our Products - Leaf in Frames

Encased in a subtle wooden frame, the simplistic beauty of a leaf can be captured, admired and kept for a lifetime

This presentation is owned by the DotL Group. It is protected by a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Singapore License http://2009s2b5.blogspot.com/

26

Our Products - Leaf in Frames

• Materials:– Wooden Frame– Wood and Paper (for inside border)– Grade A Leaves

• Creation Process:– Grade A Leaf is slowly dried in silica gel to preserve leaf and

prevent cracking– Inside border is made with wood and paper to beautify the inside

of the frame– Leaf is stuck to the frame with strong glue and sealed airtight

27

Our Products - Leaf in Frames

• Advantages:– Beautifies rooms and halls– A piece of nature’s art at almost no cost– Can be made easily by oneself

• Areas of improvements:– A better sealant to prevent decomposition– Use of more than one leaf at a time, montage– Creating our own “leaf-based” frames

28

Our Products - Leaf Paper (prototype)

A combination of newspaper and leaves, this environmentally friendly Leaf Paper can be used at home as decorations or for

writing!

Our prototype Leaf Paper contains45% leaves!

29

Our Products - Leaf Paper (prototype)

• Materials:– 6 sheets (3 double sheets) of newspaper– 15 leaves– Water– Bleach– Starch– Basin– Bottle– Deckle– Sponge and PVC cloth

32

Our Products - Leaf Paper (prototype)

• Advantages:– Useful as decoration, writing small notes, or as a gift– 100% recycled material– Reduces paper needed to be “used” and recycled– Unique and attractive

• Areas of Improvement:– Use of blender to create, smoother and cleaner paper– Use of larger deckle to create standard A4 paper– Mass Producing

33

Other DeLRI Products

• Leaf-Based Fabric– A mixture of less common cotton with more processed leaf fibres– Could be used in bags or clothes, bio-degradable– Needed complex machinery

• Leaf-Based Fish Food– Reduces amount of vegetable content in fish food– Reduces agriculture for vegetables in fish food– Deemed unacceptable to the public in survey

This presentation is owned by the DotL Group. It is protected by a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Singapore License http://2009s2b5.blogspot.com/

34

Other DeLRI Products

• Leaf-Based Solid Fuels– Wax and shredded leaves combined to form a fuel– Used for non-cooking, aromatherapy, burning for energy etc.– Reduces need for wood/coal/fuel burning– Difficult to research into as leaves caused smoke– May continue during June Holidays

37

The DeLRI Effect

• Positive Effects to the Human Environment– Less farming for new materials– Product may be cheaper than actual ones

• Positive effects to the Physical Environment– Less greenhouse gases emitted from factories– Less trees are used in paper– Less materials needed, less space needed to farm

38

The DeLRI Effect

• Special properties common in our products– Bio-degradable– Environmentally Friendly

• Why we shouldn't use too many leaves– Removes nutrients from the soil– Destroys some habitats– May upset balance in ecology
