Introduction
Vehicle management center• The vehicle fleet of an OEM is coordinated and managed by a
Vehicle management center (VMC)
• VMC is an entity which can be seen as the overall management
entity.
• Each VMC represents a country in Europe
• Germany the VMC is divided into
German1

Naturalistic FOT
Definition of required data• Based on the hypotheses and the research question of the FOT
so called performance indicators are indentified, e.g.
TTC, THW, average speed etc.
• Performance indicators can be derived from certain signals, e.g.
vehicle speed, distance to forward vehicle, steering angle etc.
• These signals have to be identified and are afterwards recorded
by using of a data acquisition system
• For the analysis the recorded data is uploaded to a database
• GPS signal will be used to derive additional information from a
digital map, e.g. road type, number of lanes etc.

Naturalistic FOT
RequirementsAs the FOT at the German1 shall be as naturalistic as possible
The data consist only of CAN data
No additional sensors (video, eye trackers etc.) will be used
No additional tasks to the driver (change of hard discs, configuration
of data logger etc.) will be required
The FOT vehicles are driven by ordinary drivers
Driver is also owner of the vehicle:
Modification of vehicles has to be reduced to a minimum
Data acquisition system (DAS) has to be installed in a manner, that:
driver is not distracted by the DAS
integration into the vehicle is conducted without significant modifications
on the vehicle

Naturalistic FOT
Requirements• All 240 vehicles have to be equipped with a DAS, which enables
recording of all relevant measured values
• As driver shall not be stressed with additional FOT specific tasks
Data upload procedure (upload of the data from the DAS to a certaindata server) is performed without any requirements and actions withregard to the driver
Data acquisition system with a GPRS modem (for wireless dataupload, diagnostics and re-configuration)
• Further requirements:
The data needs to be stored at first on a temporary storage on theDAS
Provision of GPS information of the vehicle location
GPS receiver, hard disc (temporary storage) needs to be integratedinto the data logger by ensuring a compact design, due to themodification restriction

Data acquisition system
Requirements• Logging of CAN data from the vehicle CAN-busses
• Temporary storage of the logged data
• Compression and encryption of the data
• Integration of a GPRS modem
• Wireless upload of the data via GPRS (autonomous or after
request)
• Communication interface to the data base (data upload,
localisation, status information etc.)
• Compact design for integration into the vehicles without significant
modifications
• Applicable for automotive application (high durability with regard
to vibration, temperature etc.)
• Reliability

Data acquisition system
Features of selected DASBased on the requirements on the DAS a data logger with the
following features was selected:
• 4 CAN channels for logging from different CAN busses
• GPRS quad band modem
• GPS receiver
• Built-in real time clock (with internal battery)
• Socket for SD and SIM card
• USB 2.0
• Application for logging configuration and data conversion
• Support of DBC databases for signal selection
• Firmware upgrade through GPRS

Data upload and storage procedure
Overview• Data upload and storage procedure for the German1 fleet will be
defined and finally developed by IKA
• Upload and storage procedure will be validated in the piloting
phase
• Data acquisition will be applied for a duration of 1 year
• Estimated amount of data at the German1-VMC adds up to
approximately 3500 GB (CAN only data and GPS information)
• Recorded data will autonomously be uploaded via GPRS to a
centralized data server
• Entire process chain (from data recording to storage on the data
base) is designed to work completely autonomously

Data upload procedure
Communication interface• Based on a communication interface installed on the data base
the data upload can be initiated
• Communication interface provides all information with regard to
the data logger and vehicle by using GPRS
• The communication interface can be used for the following tasks:
Autonomously synchronisation of data
View DAS which have connected to the server and its most important
parameters
Map matching of vehicle‘s position, based on the GPS information
View the received CAN frames and received GPS frames from each
monitored DAS
Remote control of DAS
Re-configuration of DAS

Data management
Central management system• The communication interface of the DAS will be integrated into
the central management system (CMS)
• CMS manages the whole data upload and enrichment procedure

Next steps
• First tests for the assessment the DAS have been conducted
• Extensive tests of DAS will be conducted within the next weeks
• The software for the upload procedure is available but needs to
be integrated into the CMS
• CMS will be developed as soon as final requirements on data
upload and storage are defined
• The validation of the software and hardware will be conducted
within the piloting phase in September 2009
