Outline

• Why have an End-User Advisory Council?• How Fieldbus Technology benefits end-

users• Encouraging our supplier community to

support open, interoperable standards

The Supplier Will Tell Us?

The “Apple” Model – a Walled Garden?• How did Apple create products that are

so coveted, they can charge a premium and still sell millions?

• “We Control Everything” means excellent “interoperability”, but costly to user

• Does this work for Process Control?

Our Suppliers Need Us

• Apple designers use their own products• Their spouses, mothers, children are also

their end users• Our suppliers are not end users of their

products• Even we are not the “real” end user – they are

our operators and our enterprise• Technology change is slow because all

products must be tested against the torments of our industry

The Real End Users . . .

The Mission of our Enterprise . . .

Is to DELIVER PRODUCT (Oil, Chemicals, Petrol, Beer, Paper, etc.)

Safely Reliably Meeting Quality Requirements Low Environmental Impact Efficiently On-time Minimal Interruptions / Unplanned Outages

Measurement & Control are Essential for the Mission

• And the process control technologies we choose have to stand up to our requirements, our business needs, and our end users . . . .

How Has FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus Served these ends?

Unequalled confidence in all-digital data and network

Strict ± 1 ms determinism Speeds up to 6x a second or better Measurement Status (health) updates every

cycle More reliable than 4-20 mA Standard function blocks across multiple vendors Extensive diagnostics including sensors, device,

“process”, and “physical layer”

Where Did FF Get So Smart? FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus grew out of the ISA SP50

committee – their mission was to specify the new, open, digital 4-20 mA

75% of the committee was comprised of end users, with a lot of participation from the large process industries

Their vision was for more than an open, interoperable communication bus

The “User Layer” makes FF a complete automation infrastructure

Great effort and innovation by our suppliers!

Why isn’t FF as easy as 4-20 mA?

The EUAC has had a persistent focus on ease-of-use

The “Host Registration” test is a result of persistent nagging by the EUAC

“Compatibility Rev” will accommodate “legacy” device maintenance practices

“Herding the cats” is more difficult when FF isn’t a clear sales differentiator

Dictatorship versus Democracy – sometimes it takes a little longer

Apple (closed, proprietary) vs. PC (open)

Why Do We Like FF for ROM? Fieldbus gives us great confidence in data by its

relentless determinism and integration of signal status

There is a path to get some of this with HART, WiHART, Profibus, and even conventional IO

There are “walled garden” solutions that tout themselves as “as good as FF”

FF for ROM puts a standard FF “skin” on all these disparate protocols

It specifies a STANDARD and secure method for wired or wireless backhaul

Additional Use Cases . . . Analyzer Shelters Local Panels Vendor Skids (water treatment, thermal oxidizer,

truck / rail loading)

Walled Garden Won’t Work

A Sole Source / MIV solution will get you 80-90% of integration issues addressed, but still significant effort on integration of the “remainder”

We still have to choose low bidder in many applications

We need our best resources – smart and creative people – solving measurement and control issues, not security, integration and data mapping

Our Profession is to be “Artists of Intelligence”, not “Janitor of Data”

The Opportunity

• FOUNDATION for ROM can address these key business issues

• Standards based environment that is sustainable

• Significantly reduced lifecycle costs• Reduced customization• Increased safety
