When life gives you lemons, make lemonade

When boxes come with holes,…

Make life brighter with a candle lit…

… hexagon shaped table lamp.

Add strings to make it a lantern to celebrate the mid-autumn festival, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th Chinese Lunar Calendar.

No interest to learn how to

make this?

Let me change your mind.

Find:

1) a paper bag.

2) a pair of scissors.

Ready to cut?

Be creative and turn…

…this into that!

What tools do you need?

A fruit box with holes on its sides.

Choose side of box to work with.

Which side looks better?

front

Check the edges.

Are there any bent or damaged areas?

Draw a line with a ruler and cut that off first to create straight edges on all sides.

Create 6 pieces of “H”.

Draw lines equidistant around each hole to form a “H”, as shown here.

Cut with scissors or blade and remove only one side of the centre flap.

Fold the other side of the flap downwards towards the back of the cardboard.

Line up all 6 “H” sides in a row.

Face side down.

Join sides with cellophane tape.

Centre and bottom

Tape from the inside of lantern.

Join sides to form a circle.

The taped sides should be on the inside of lantern.

Stand lantern once all sides are taped together.

Bend the flap inwards towards the centre of lantern.

This form the holder for base of the lantern.

Create base of lantern.

Find a round object, example, a cover or plate, large enough to sit on the base holder.

This is a cover from a container of margarine I bought. It is a perfect size for my lantern.

Try to keep covers of food containers for craft projects.

Check for size.

Put the cover or plate onto the base of the lantern.

Make sure that it is large enough to hold the hexagon shape in place.

Cut out cupboard for base.

Place the cover or plate on another piece of cardboard.

Draw a circle around it. I managed to find a

cupboard with a circle already cut into it.

I placed the cover at its centre before I drew a circle.

Cut this circle out.

Place cut out base on top of flaps.

Stick base to the sides with tape.

How lantern look from top.

Candle holder is made of cut off top of a supplement bottle.

Prepare bottle for candle holder.

Cut top off bottle.…to hold top of bottle.

Cut circle on base large enough…

Insert top of bottle into base.

Picture here show base of

another lantern design.

Remove cap. Cut the edge so that it

is smooth and looks like a flower as shown here.

Push the opening into the hole.

Screw the cap back on.

How it look from bottom...

…with cap screwed on.

Or place cap on top of “flower”.

Drip some wax before placing candle.

Alternative placing of base.

You can also place the cut out base so that the flaps do not show when viewed from top.

Tape flaps to base to hold it in place.
