?What are your top

three pieces of advice for building a

remarkable business

Don’t look at what your industry is doing, look at what they are not doing.1

If all you are doing is looking at what the industry is doing, and playing by their rules, then you are just a me too kind of company. There’s a limit on how well you can do if you’re just another version of what is already out there.

Invest in your people - and then give them the authority & freedom to make decisions and figure things out.

2

A big part of being able to learn and grow in an organization is stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something that you are not 100% sure exactly how to do. People won’t do that if they feel like they’re going to be jumped all over if they make a mistake. Mistakes are going to happen.

Some mistakes are going to be cheap and some expensive. I don’t have a problem with mistakes… I have a problem with patterns of mistakes. If people keep making mistakes then clearly the learning is not happening.

Take chances and take risks - because that's where everything interesting happens.

3

At the start, everything is speculative, everything is risky… but comparably speaking, you don’t have that much to lose. So you take some risks, you go from zero to whatever million a year, and you get to a certain degree of success. From there it is easy to get a little complacent.

Part of being an entrepreneur is building the business that you actually want to be running.

Success can look like different things. It can look like a laptop on the beach or it can look like a glass castle. It would be a real shame to build yourself a glass castle if what you really want is a laptop on the beach.

?what are your top

three pieces of advice for leading a

remarkable life

1Do something everyday to make yourself better.

If you want to live not just an adequate life…but a remarkable life then you’ve got to be the person who can lead that life.

You’ve got to paint a picture for yourself. Who is the person you wish you could be? Who is that ultimate person?

You’re not going to be able to transform into that person overnight.

But if you do one thing everyday to get closer to that person, whether it’s exercising or developing a new skill …then in aggregate, after a year or three years you’ll find yourself being a much more impressive person.

Do something every single day to help somebody else.2

The war for our character is fought on the front lines.

For everyone there’s a spectrum from right to wrong and in the middle there is a gray area.

The gray area is where my behaviour and decisions everyday determine if I am taking a step towards being a better person today or am I taking a step towards being a worse person today.

You have to be curious and to pay attention.3

A lot of what is exciting, interesting and fascinating about life is happening around us all the time.

And many people develop a kind of inoculation against the magic of it.

We stop looking, we stop paying attention, we stop getting excited.

If you really want a remarkable life that is fascinating and gives you all these opportunities to learn and grow and contribute, it comes down to paying attention, being curious about what is around you.
