• As a Substance Abuse Professional you have the ability to help people see beyond the moment.

• Educated Choice• John worked with a 16 year old high school student to

help him understand the long term effects of using Crystal Meth. The student got into recovery, completed high school and is now in college studying to be teacher.

• Uneducated Consequences • Maria, a 17 year old high

school student was not as fortunate. There was not a drug counselor available the day she needed help. Maria became a heroin addict. She walks the streets to support her addiction.

• Alcohol abuse kills an estimated 100,000 people every year.

• Crystal meth cost the U.S. an estimated $23.4 billion in 2005

• In the United States 17.6 million abuse alcohol or are alcohol dependent.

• Crystal meth contains drain cleaner, matches, brake fluid, lighter fluid and hydrochloric acid.

• As a counselor what you teach and provide can and will help people to change their lives.

• Why Prevention?• Substance abuse is a preventable disease.• It usually begins in adolescence and childhood.

• It’s called pot, weed, grass, ganja, or skunk but it is still marijuana.

• Maybe you know a person with a prescription for Vicodin, morphine or codeine. These are all opiates.

• Marijuana changes the way that a person sees, hears, smells, tastes, and feels.

• A person who is addicted to opiates will develop uncontrollable urges to use more.

• Both Marijuana and Opiates destroy lives and you can make a difference.

• The desire to work at making a change in one’s life enables them to take steps towards recovery.

• Talking with a Substance Abuse Counselor is the first of many positive steps.
