(Making) the Future of NewsAnd how the future is importantin the design of everything

April 10 2015 - SND DC 2015

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Hello, I am Boris

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Hello, I am Boris- Freelance Generalist.

- Worked in orgs 1 - 20,000.

- Across Hierarchies.

- Across Design, Product, Tech, Strategy, Management.

- Mostly in London for BBC News.

- Brain currently in ‘Future of News’ and ‘Structured Data’ modes.

Disclaimer and fine print- I am not here as a representative of my clients.

- I’ll probably diss your (future) corporate overlords, and mine, don’t take it too personal, and feel free to defend them.

- Feel free to steal any of my ideas, just don’t attribute the unfriendly ones.

Present FuturesWhat do we think now is going to happen

Future Technology- Connectivity and being connected.

- Computing power.

- Sensors and IoT.

- Big Data and Cloud Computing and using it.

- Algorithms and Machine Learning.

- Content everywhere.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

What does this mean for BBC News- Adaptability is more important.

- Source and handle larger amounts of data becomes more important.

- Redefine news as a service.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Future People UK/Western- Longer lives.

- Information inequality, changing media behaviour.

- Reinvention, automation, obsolescence and job hopping.

- The quantified self, data generation and personalisation.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Future People Global- Growing middle class, digital growth steep.

- The unconnected 60%, 1.4b without electricity.

- Differing attitudes towards privacy.

- Tech spreading does not guarantee political opening.

- Large disruption: fragmentation, migration, crisï.

- Nostalgism: 85% of Turks, 60% of Britons think it used to be better. Only China believes (out of 20 IPSOS MORI countries)

- the next generation is going to have it better.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Future Global News Trends- The Changing of Women, more women graduate than men

but stay behind in the labour force.

- Authenticity as much as authority, impartiality and accuracy.

- Strong polarisation in media might require redefining news.

- Global stories and local ones that touch globally.

- Business News in challenging places is not done much.

- Governance: Where lies the real power. Grey cardinals and tech.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

What does it mean for BBC News- Local news, journalism where you live and work.

- Creating Humanist understanding globally.

- Many responses, one size does not fit all.

- Audiences in need, North Korea; Russia; Turkey.

- Report the unreported.

- We can’t compete with some competitors financially.

- Control over distribution is becoming more difficult.

- Conflict reporting becomes more difficult, with drones and social media.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

How will we find and tell stories- We will find stories more from the Audience and data.

- Move away from the article.

- Short and long form content.

- WDIAM (What does it all mean.)

- Creating more personal relevancy.

- Different tone, more open.

- More but better interactive.

- Stand alone news brands for other audiences.

- Automation.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Distributing stories- Satisfy the users need in their context

- The definition of a story will change

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

The Future of BBC News- Journalistic values and clear about principles: accuracy,

impartiality, diversity of opinion, fair treatment of people in the news and public service.

- Quality not quantity.

- Openness.

- Universality: not the voice of god.

- Independence.

Going beyond predictions- Extrapolation is useful, not very reliable.

- Very hard to predict mid-term future.

- Predictions are hard to act on ‘Agile’-ly.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Going beyond predictions- Making statements about the future is very political.

- The insights about the future rarely make it back into the products.

Designers in power

Designers shape an important part of the relations people have to products.

Technology sector often relies on designers to create their products.

SNDDC 2015Boris van Hoytema — @bvhme

Solving valuable problems

We are great at solving problems, adding value and moving fast.

But by not understanding longer term desired outcomes we can’t choose the right problems to solve.
