DESCRIPTION

On August 11, 2013 The Shannon J. Shaw Memorial Fund in conjunction with The Modified Dolls – New Mexico Chapter hosted a free seminar that extended exclusively to all tattoo artists, body piercers and shop owners in Albuquerque and its surrounding areas. The focus of the seminar was to to offer valuable information and materials for artists to use in educating and promoting the necessity of keeping inked and virgin skin protected from UV rays in the ongoing fight to prevent skin cancer. The goal of Shannon’s fund is to provide education, early prevention, treatment and diagnosis of skin cancer throughout New Mexico and its under-served communities. Donations were provided by local business for a silent auctions where all funds raised went directly to The Shannon J. Shaw Memorial Fund at the UNM Cancer Center, a 501(c)3 charity. You might ask yourself..."why tattoo artists?" Tattoo artists work with a wide variety of clientele and see more skin than other professions; each of whom they tell to keep their tattoos covered with sunblock once it is healed to keep the colors vibrant. We felt as though it was necessary for tattoo artists to be more educated about skin cancer and the negative effects of UV Rays.
