Visual Data Analysis: Ontario Baby Names from 1917 to 2010 (just for fun)

Happily, governments in Canada are beginning to make more data publicly available. Just for fun, I looked at the changes and trends in baby names in Ontario, from 1917 to 2010. The data is from the Ontario Government, posted on the federal government’s Open Data portal.

As you see, names come and go. Boys’ names that were popular in the 1920’s have fallen in use. The crop of newly-popular names have little history before 1970.

The same goes for girls’ names.

And finally, here’s a striking example of the power of popular culture, such as movies, on name choices!
