rebecca.gGenerally known as a popular tourist destination for it´s white sand and clear blue sea - many people do actually live there. It is very easy to get taken away by the beauty of the island and not notice the less attractive side. However I have a background of working with youth organisations, and I coul

rebecca.gAnd Jewish by birth.rebecca.gAs Capoeira is very visual and difficult to describe in words, here´s a little clip from a film that shows Capoeira from the past.

rebecca.gAnd part Jamaican.rebecca.gAnd yes I am British, or more specifically, I am English.rebecca.gSome people may think it odd that I have adopted another culture different to my own, what has Brazil got to do with me? So let me say that yes, I come from Europe.

ISSUE

This is a lack of affordable activities for youth in Mauritius that acts an alternative to the negative activities which surround them.

“There is unfortunately not much interaction among family members, and kids

are left on their own and lack support.

Apart from school they don't meet the right people and they are not exposed enough for them to decide the right step and what they

want to do.”

“Capoeira brings together everybody and could really benefit everyone

because you learn to not see the other as an enemy but as a friend, a player

- Volodia, 15 years old

VISION

To build a future generation that values respect for themselves and others, and is

able to express themselves without the use of violence.

Thank you

“Capoeira is a martial art which creates a bond within the group and makes it

feel like a family. This feeling of forming part of a group which you can rely on, share, express yourself, gives a relief that there are people for you and can compensate any lack of support you

experience at home.”

- Capoeira Student

Ricken: “It is a feel good factor which relieves you from your everyday stress and binds you within a group so you know there is always people around you who speak the same language.”

Jenna: “It feeds my competitive streak, not in the sense that I want to beat my opponent but more in the way that I wanna improve and surpass myself.”

Volodia, 15: “Capoeira brings together everybody and could really benefit everyone because you learn to not see the other as an enemy but as a friend, a player just like them.”

Umar: “Capoeira invites and takes care of everyone as family so these children get a home.”

Umar: “Capoeira is one of the few things that always puts a smile on my face”

Deelan, 15: “In the beginning I viewed it as a simple martial art but it's much more that that now, it is more like a passion, and by the way it keeps me fit.”

Arthur, 15: “It helped me alot in the way that I became more social than before, and i'm way more fit. I also really like the capoeira philosophy and cultural part that is really interesting.”

Umar: “Capoeira helps you leave all your worries and problems outside the roda.”
