Lifespan for a water heater
• The typical lifespan for a water heater is 8-12 years
• Though uncommon they can last up to 15-20 years if maintained well
• Tankless water heaters can last 2 to 3 times longer than traditional tanks
5 steps to prolong your heater’s life
• There are 5 steps that can help you to extend your water heater’s life
• These are just tips/suggestions not guarantees that your tank will last for 15-20 years
• Proper care is still required by the owner
Step 1: Install a 2nd Anode Rod
• The anode rod is goes through galvanic corrosion over time
• Anode rods are made of magnesium or aluminum
• The anode rod essentially sacrifices itself through corrosion to protect the tank from corroding over time
Step 2: Install an Expansion Tank
• When water heats up from 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 120 degrees Fahrenheit it expands
• If your system is closed the water doesn’t have anywhere to go which will lead to a constant change in water pressure
• Installing an expansion tank can lessen stress on the tank and can double the tank’s life
Step 3: Clean or flush out your tank
• If you have an older tank flushing it out annually can prevent sediment buildup
• Flushing out the tank annually also will help maintain efficiency for longer
• New model water heaters are self-cleaning
Step 4: Install a pressure regulating valve (PRV)
• High water pressure can damage your house appliances that require water
• High water pressure also can lead to premature water heater failure
• The PRV will reduce system pressure. If you have a PRV it is
recommended to install an expansion tank
Step 5: Install a water softener
• Water with high concentration of minerals can cause scaling
• Scaling is a precipitation of mineral deposits on the surfaces of an appliance
• Scaling reduces the efficiency of appliances
