Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese StudiesSupporting the study of Japan Studies at postgraduate level in
Japan and the UK
The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation

The Foundation carries out work through three main activities:

• Began in 1991
• Unique 20-month programme for UK citizens
aged 21-35 (19 months are spent in Japan)
• Up to eight Scholars selected each year (out of 160
to 200 applicants on average)

placement and homestay in Japan
Daiwa Scholarships – the programme
In the UK:
• a residential month of Japanese language tuition in the UK in
August prior to departure for Tokyo in September
In Japan:
• 12 months learning Japanese at Waseda University in Tokyo
• 1 month homestay anywhere in Japan
• 6 months on work placement – generally in Tokyo
First few weeks in Japan: flat hunting, sightseeing, visiting Waseda,
sampling Japanese food …while at the Hotel Asia Center
Language learning – language study at Waseda
• Waseda Language Centre https://www.waseda.jp/inst/cjl/en/
• Scholars take 2 to 3 classes a day to make up the required 26 credits,
Monday to Saturday
• Scholars will be able to take classes from other Waseda faculties too
• Two semesters: late September to late January & early April to late July
• We lay on an intensive course for Scholars in February

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must be:
• British passport holders up to 35 years of age as of 1 September 2021.
Candidates should be:
• graduates or due to graduate by 1 September 2021;
• equipped with a degree in any subject apart from Japanese Studies* or
with a strong record of achievement in their field;
• in possession of clear career objectives combined with a serious interest in
Japan.
No previous experience of Japan or Japanese is necessary.
*Graduates in Japanese language studies are not eligible to apply for Daiwa Scholarships but may wish to apply for a Daiwa Scholarship
in Japanese Studies.
Selection process
• STAGE 1
• A number (usually 25) of candidates will be invited to a Stage 1
interview in mid-February 2021
• STAGE 2
• Those who pass Stage 1 (usually 15 or 16) will sit a language
aptitude test and attend a lunch in mid to late February 2021
• STAGE 3
• The final shortlist (usually twelve) of candidates will be interviewed by
the Trustees in mid to late March 2021
• All interviews take place in London
• Results announced soon after Stage 3
• The selected candidates will depart for Japan in September 2021
Benefits
• Tuition - all tuition and examination fees throughout the
Scholarship
• Maintenance grant - for the duration of the Scholarship to
cover accommodation and living costs for a single person
• Travel - economy-class travel to and from Japan at the
beginning and end of the Scholarship
• Accommodation - hotel accommodation in central Tokyo for
the first weeks in Japan; then, rented apartments
• Insurance - standard private medical insurance while Daiwa
Scholars are in Japan on the programme, complementing the
Japanese National Health Insurance system

What makes a good application?
• There is no standard formula or ‘candidate’
• What is your interest in Japan? Why are you applying?
• Find your own angle
• Be able to back-up what you say
• Well-written and avoid clichés
• Think of your career goals and how time in Japan will help towards them
Daiwa Foundation Japanese Studies Scholarships
• NEW from April 2015
• Open to UK nationals who have a degree in Japanese Studies
• Strong Japanese language ability is key
• Per year, we aim to support up to three British nationals in Japan and up
to three in the UK who are doing postgraduate studies in Japanese
Studies
• Benefits:
• Tuition covered (for duration of course; only to cover home student fees
in the UK)
• Stipend of £1,000 a month while in the UK and ¥260,000 per month while
in Japan
• Annual UK-Japan air fare paid
• Deadline: last Thursday in January – 30 January in 2020
and 28 January in 2021
