The Coming Months
If we think back to the same time last year, we were dealing with the consequences of a run of extreme heat and about to be hit with the dual impacts of a severe canine gastroenteritis outbreak and, of course, the dreaded Covid-19 virus. I knock on wood as I write this, but can’t help but think that I prefer the year that we’re in over the one that was. That said, we can’t lose sight of the fact that the closure of Angle Park for vital works, from late March until July, is a project with regard to which we probably wish that we had a ‘fast-forward’ button available to us.
In the absence of that option, the next best thing that can be offered to our participants during that period is greater support. In that regard, GRSA will be making a couple of positive announcements in the coming fortnight which will hopefully encourage our trainers, in particular, to sustain the momentum of recent months despite the temporary interruption. The Angle Park redevelopment is a key piece of a broader puzzle, relating to track and venue upgrades across South Australia, which is really starting to take clear shape.
As the state’s premier venue, and the home of metropolitan racing in SA, it’s critical for any changes to Angle Park to not only be ahead of the game, but also to be up to best practice standard. Further to consultation with external specialists, the AGRC and registered participants, we are confident that the final product from these imminent works will be a source of pride to our people, and a feather in the cap of our sport.
On a somewhat related note, it appears increasingly likely that Brett Lee’s impossible track record of 28.88 seconds for the 515m will be cemented in history, and remain one of the all-time highlights from this state. That would only be fitting.
Yours in racing,

The 2020 SA Greyhound of the Year was Sir Truculent for trainer Wally Harkins which was announced at a Gala Event held at Angle Park on Saturday, 30th January.
SA’s staying star Sir Truculent was voted the winner with 31 votes ahead of a stellar line up of sprinters that included Coorong Lucy (21 votes), Shadow Mist (20 votes), Major Major (17 votes ) and Golden Night (16 votes). Sir Truculent is SA Bred and Owned by his trainer Wally Harkins with is residence based at Reynella, only 20 minutes South of Adelaide. Wally only trains one racing greyhound and has Sir Truculent’ s half-sister at home ready to race in the coming months. Sir Truculent’s exploits on the track in 2020 were outstanding with 28 wins and 11 placings from his 46 starts, with $145,350 in prizemoney. He dominated the local staying ranks winning the State Final of the SA Distance Championship, the Premier’s Cup and the Staying Cup all over his beloved 731m journey at Angle Park along with the State’s premier middle distance event, the Shane McQueen over 600m. He competed interstate with great heart running second in the Group 1 Bold Trease at Sandown and fifth in the Group 1 Topgun Stayers at the Meadows in Victoria.
Wally advised on the dais that Sir Truculent’s previous owner wanted to sell him early last year as the dog was getting back in his races and finding a lot of traffic however “the Truc” had more than paid his way and he was happy to sell. The offer was for only $2,000 so Wally quickly bought him himself and the rest is now history with almost $150,000 in the bank and the SA Greyhound of the Year title to his name.

In 2020 progeny of Worm Burner won an amazing 404 races, a mind-blowing 376 wins in front of his nearest rival in an astonishing year. In 2020 The Syndicate won 80 races with their greyhounds winning at Gawler, Angle Park and Murray Bridge. The main performers were Spring Cobra (12 wins), Spring Burner (11 wins), Spring Vinnie (8 wins) and Spring Scout (7 wins).
A special mention to other SA registered syndicates who had terrific success in 2020 which included Razza Racing, Nineofus, Bazinga, Schadow Racing and Franco Farr.
2020 SA City Strike Rate Wally Harkins – 57.44%
This award is based on performances for Angle Park city meetings (City A/City B). The trainer must also have a minimum of 20 starters for the year. Wally Harkins qualified through the performance mainly of his star stayer Sir Truculent who won 27 races from his 39 starts including the Shane McQueen Final and Stayer’s Cup. During 2020 Wally trained 27 winners from 47 starters at city meetings, giving him a 57.44% strike rate.
2020 Gawler Trackstar Award Long Gully Boy – 34 starts (14/12/5) Trainer – Paula Hearnden
Long Gully Boy had all of his 34 starts for the year at the Gawler venue and over the 400m journey with his best time being 22.58. He made the final of the Gawler Sprint Classic on Gawler Cup final night in October after running second in his heat, finishing in 4th position in the final. He raced all year winning 41% of his races and running in the top three 91% of the time, only being unplaced on 3 occasions.
2020 Run Of The Year – Shadow Mist (September)
The Run of the Year was Shadow Mist for trainer Lauren Harris for his performance in an Open event at Angle Park on Thursday, 17th September. He fired out of the boxes at dispatch running a blistering 4.40 and then 16.68 to the back. He carried away from his rivals going on to win by over 5 lengths in an amazing 29.29 which was the fastest time recorded at Angle Park this year over the 515m and makes him the 16th fastest ever at the venue.
Shadow Mist wins this award based on the combination of the public votes where he was voted first and votes from the GOTY Panel where he was voted second.
The SA Bred Doug Payne Feature was run at Angle Park on January 28th after it was delayed from December of last year with the darling of the SA sprinting ranks, Coorong Lucy, taking out another feature event for trainer Cameron Butcher.
The daughter of Worm Burner and Molly Be Nimble went into the race as a short priced favourite on the back of her brilliant SA Sprint Championship win earlier in the month. However there was an outstanding line up of SA Bred chasers waiting for her and hoping to make it difficult for the Queen of SA sprinting.
As the start was affected Coorong Lucy did what she does best and exploded from box 7 to lead easily to the first turn. Miss Bellawood for Gino Grgurovic also began swiftly from box 4 to move to second while kennel mate Mister Harlewood made use of his inside draw to move to third while the remainder of the field jostled for position. Into the back straight and Coorong Lucy opened up a nice break over both Miss Bellawood and Mister Harlewood who were battling hard for second with Rugged And Ready moving out of the chasing division into fourth for Ken Gill.
Off the back straight and Coorong Lucy was high rolling in the lead out by 5 lengths from her rivals and turned for home with a race winning break. Mister Harlewood gradually was gaining the ascendancy over his kennel mate and edged into a clear second ahead of Miss Bellawood while the remainder of the field struggled to make ground. Down to the finish line and Coorong Lucy was in full flight going on to win by 4 lengths in a brilliant 29.67 for the 515m journey with splits of 4.40 and 16.81 and just packed to much speed for her rivals. Mister Harlewood ran a super race into second and looks to be getting near his top which saw him rated one of the best stayers in the country in the middle of last year when he was trained in Victoria. While Miss Bellawood ran a gallant third after chasing hard all race.
Coorong Lucy is owned by both Cameron and Yvonne Butcher and the $6,000 first prize took “Lucy’s” prizemoney to just under $150,000 with an outstanding career record of 36 wins from 50 starts including 7 placings.
Doug Payne is one of only three South Australian’s inducted into the GCA Hall of Fame and is recognized as an icon of SA greyhound racing. He was a true ambassador for the industry winning the first three Adelaide Cups in 1972, 73 and 74 in addition to winning 14 training premierships.
It was an absolute pleasure to have some of Doug’s family on course again this year with Doug’s great grandchildren Evelyn and Xavier presenting the trophy to the winning connections.

RUNOF THE MONTH
January
Greyhound of the Month for January was Coorong Lucy for trainer Cameron Butcher. The star sprinter started this year the same as she started last year with the first Greyhound of the Month award after taking out another SA Sprint Championship title.
The daughter of Worm Burner and Molly Be Nimble started the month off with a brilliant win in the Heat of the SA Sprint where she led throughout running a slick 29.53. She repeated the dose in the Final again flying the lids to lead and race away in a dominant display. She ran a sensational 29.52 in winning by 3.50 lengths. She then stepped out in Open company at headquarters and looked a little flat running 4th, however, bounced back to her best with a super win in the Doug Payne SA Bred feature where she rattled of a slick 29.67
win and made it two features for the month.
At the end of the month Coorong Lucy’s record stood at 50 starts for 36 wins and 7 placings with earnings just under $150,000.
Coorong Lucy also claimed Run of the Month for January for Cameron Butcher after her brilliant performance at Angle Park on Thursday, 14th January in the Final of the SA Sprint Championship over the 515m journey. She stepped out as one of the favourites and she didn’t disappoint her fans jumping brilliantly from box 2 to the lead the high quality line up. She ran a sizzling 4.33 first split and then a slick 16.71 to the back where she was rolling in the lead. Turning for home she raced clear of her rivals to win by 3.50 lengths in a flying 29.52.
At the most recent ICG meeting late last year it was agreed that proposed Schedule B would be adopted when the Angle Park Shutdown was in effect which should be by about mid March.

Racing ReportRacing Manager Shaun Mathieson

GRSA has restricted the series to 1-4 wins and 28 starts incase a greyhound wins both the Heat and Final so this will still keep them eligible. If greyhounds win outside the series this may deem them ineligible for the Sandown series. Mount Gambier racing twice a week With the resumption of two meetings a week at Mount Gambier on a Thursday and Sunday, the Thursday meetings will be Time Graded events (Maidens, 1-4 wins and 5+ wins) with only 400m plus events programmed and the Sunday meetings will be the normal graded meetings with the new 305m distance included under specific conditions.
With the resumption of two weekly meetings, GRSA has reverted the prizemoney levels at Mount Gambier back to the current Category 3 levels with a movement back to G-Six across both meetings where possible.
305m start at Mount GambierWith the 305m start available at Mount Gambier there will only be two 305m races programmed on Sundays.
One will be for young Maiden greyhounds with the youngest greyhounds gaining entry first based on age, the other will be a Masters, with eligible greyhounds being selected on age with the oldest given first preference. Masters conditions is the same as races conducted in the Metro area with greyhounds 3¾ years and above eligible.
GRSA and the Mount Gambier GRC strongly recommend trainers nominate for multiple distances to ensure they do not miss out on a run at any meeting.
Transition to online nominationsVery soon GRSA will be contacting those trainers identified as needing some assistance with the online nomination process over the last few months.
Please remember however that members of the ICG and GRP panel are happy to assist any trainer who requires some assistance in transitioning which is greatly appreciated.

RACING REPORT
The EASTAR – Match Race Series at GawlerThe local South Australian match race series, nicknamed ‘The Eastar’, will be shifted to Gawler due to the track update of Angle Park, which is expected to be well underway by April 2021.
The series will be held on Easter Sunday night, 4th April over the 531m. A big local crowd is expected for the meeting given the timing of the event and the public holiday the following day.
Greyhounds competing must be South Australian, based on the Nationals Championships conditions, which require greyhounds to be domiciled in the State for at least 76 days of the last 150 days prior to the close of nominations.
Selection for this series will be for the fastest greyhounds nominated, based on their best time over the Gawler 531m distance since 1st October 2020 (regardless of their placing). GRSA will regularly update and publish a leaderboard (top 25), so all trainers and connections are aware of where their greyhound stands up until the close of nominations on Wednesday, 31st March 2021.
There will be two lead up Preludes dates of the Eastar at Gawler. They will be normal graded events over the 531m worth a total of $3,585 (City A prizemoney) with the winner taking a Prov1 penalty. They will be programmed for Sunday, 28th February and Sunday, 21st March with a maximum of 2 preludes per meeting.
Greyhounds will also have an opportunity to post a time by solo trialling over the Gawler 531m (dates to be determined). Trainers wishing to pursue this option will require approval from the Grading Department to ensure greyhounds are suitable for the event based on form and times run at other tracks. Greyhounds that sit on the leaderboard (top 25) will also be afforded the opportunity to improve their position by way of solo trialling.
Nominations for the Gawler ‘Eastar’ will close on Wednesday, 31st March, 2021 at 9.00am with the eight (8) fastest greyhounds selected for the local match race series. Reserves will be selected as per a final (based on time) and in the event of a scratching, reserve 9 will have preference over reserve 10.
The head-to-head matches will be decided based on the final leaderboard, with no manual intervention by the Grader, as per the following:
· Match 1 – Seed 1 v Seed 4 (1st $2,750 - 2nd $350)
· Match 2 – Seed 2 v Seed 3 (1st $2,500 - 2nd $350)
· Match 3 – Seed 5 v Seed 8 (1st $2,250 - 2nd $350)
· Match 4 – Seed 6 v Seed 7 (1st $2,000 - 2nd $350)
The prizemoney for the overall Eastar placegetters (based on individual times in the match races) will be:
• 1st $4,500 – 2nd $1,300 – 3rd $650
The overall winner of the Gawler Eastar will be guaranteed a spot in the State of Origin Match race series (SA V Vic) to be held at the newly developed Angle Park track in September, as long as it is nominated and eligible to represent SA. As an added incentive the winner of the State of Origin Match Race Series guarantees itself a spot in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup in October and if successful will be guaranteed a spot in the Group 1 TOPGUN at the Meadows in November.

Changes to weighted points score for South AustraliaGreyhound Racing SA advise changes to the Weighted Point Score Table for SA Grading.
Based on the most recent Grading Review Panel meeting the Grading Department have made changes to the points allocation for the WPS. This is the first part of changes approved by the GRP for implementation and will be effective immediately.
The main changes are –
• The Maiden points for category CTA, CTB, PR1 have now been slightly increased and tiered
• All placegetters 7th and 8th are allocated 6th place points to accommodate the mix of G-Six and 8 dog Quad racing in SA
Please refer to the updated table on the GRSA website.
GRSA is still working with OzChase for race classification for Time Graded and Pathway events along with the changes approved for the Order of Preference.

Some items from GRP The items below come from the recent Grading Review Panel meeting with an implementation date advised.
There are other items from the meeting that are currently in the process of being changed and an implementation date will then be determined.
Mixed Masters – Grading –
It was recommended to the panel that if a Mixed Masters is programmed the Grade 5 dogs will be mixed if there is Grade 4 and Grade 3 dogs linking together like normal grading. If there are Grade 2 and 3 dogs and then Grade 5 dogs only a Grade 5 Masters will be conducted under normal conditions as these cannot be linked. If there is enough to run a high grade Mixed Masters (i.e. Grade 2/3 and 4) we will do that and not include Grade 5 unless they nominate specifically for this programmed event. Effective immediately
Policy Interstate Greyhounds - Summary of change’s for the greyhounds career
Interstate greyhounds racing in SA for the first time will be Grade 5 at all tracks and distances, unless they meet the following criteria, which would then see them, being upgraded to Grade 4 at all tracks and distances:
• 5+ metropolitan full stakes wins
• $75,000 in prizemoney
Interstate greyhounds racing in SA for the first time and meet the following criteria, will be upgraded to Grade 3 at all tracks and distances:
• Group 1 and 2 winners over a similar distance in the past 6 months
The grader has ultimate discretion in applying the above upgrade rule and may choose to keep a greyhound at Grade 5 level if one or more of the following apply:
• The form of the greyhound is poor enough to warrant it remaining at Grade 5
• The greyhound is a masters greyhound (4yo+)
• The distance the greyhound is nominating for is outside the greyhound’s normal distance range
Greyhounds that have left SA to race Interstate for 3 months or more, will be subject to the above upgrade rules upon their return. However, any grade that was established at a particular track and distance prior to their departure from SA will be retained in the last 6 months.
This will replace the greyhounds winning a Metro Grade policy for assessment in SA.
This will not affect the Grade 6 policy
This has been in effect since Monday, 4th January 2021.

Deep within a forest a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground.
The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Finally, the female bird turned to her mate.
“Dear,” she chirped, “I think it's time to tell him he's adopted.”

Comments on nominations marked “only” The Grading Review Panel agreed that some trainers were using the comments box to influence the grading of fields in particular Grade 5 Only for all their greyhounds.
The panel previously resolved that “Only” would be disregarded over all distances and the grading left to the Grader (Masters Only or Juvenile Only will be accepted as this is for a specific type of race).
If trainers put “Only or no start or leave me out” then the grader will grade as normal and if a greyhound would be graded into a mixed event based on race wins then he will leave them out based on the trainers request. The more information provided to the Grader allows for him to accommodate those requests.
Winning Grade 6 races in order GRSA reminds trainers to win their Grade 6 events in order at a specific venue.
For the venues that allow two Grade 6 wins trainers need to win a Grade 6 over one distance and then a Grade 6 over the other distance. If a greyhound wins a Grade 6 and then a Grade 5 they will lose their Grade 6 over the other distance at that venue.
Re-grading for all tracks and distances Re-grading will occur for all tracks and distances for Grade 3 or higher greyhounds.
A trainer can apply for a re-grade after two unsuccessful nominations over the corresponding distance. If having met this criteria the responsibility is on the trainer to apply for a re-grade prior to the close of nominations. Only one distance will be considered for a re-grade per meeting.
Bookings of trials through online trial bookerTrainers are reminded for those that book trials for Angle Park and Murray Bridge online, staff are directed to accommodate those bookings. For those trainers who wish to trial without booking, which is fine, they will only fit in if there is space or will be at the end of the bookings.

Distribution of WAP Payments between Trainers and OwnersGRSA would like to remind all participants that receive a WAP that the payment is the equivalent of prizemoney.
If you are currently responsible for distributing prizemoney to another party then the same approach applies to WAP payments.
From GRSA’s perspective the position in relation to third parties is reflective of OzChase records and is as follows:
• If GRSA have been notified of an ownership split [which is recorded in OzChase] then you DO NOT need to make a payment to owners for the WAP because GRSA will do this automatically; however
• If you ordinarily forward on payments to owners on your own accord, then you DO need to do the same for the WAP. Each remittance will include the name of the dog for which the WAP is being made.
A wonderful field was assembled for the 26th running of the John Gray Grade 5 feature final at Angle Park on January 21st run in pleasant conditions.
There were plenty of chances as they went to the boxes with last week’s heat winners Zipping Sullivan for Tim Aloisi, Diorite Fire for Ben Rawlings, Classic McLaren for Tania Foster and Lily Pad for Lisa Rasmussen all strongly favoured to run well.
As the start was affected for the feature Ebby Cruiser began well for Rob Harnas from the inside box along with Diorite Fire out of the 2 and they were quickly challenged at the winning post on the first occasion by Zipping Sullivan who loomed ominously. Lily Pad also began well and charged forward from box 5 while Classic McLaren was slowly away and positioned himself at the tail of the field early. Leaving the front straight and Zipping Sullivan accelerated quickly to run to the front with Lily Pad in hot pursuit as they headed to the back straight. With interference on the first turn Classic McLaren railed strongly to move to third with Canya Go Wild for Paul Bodsworth into fourth while the remainder of the field looked to have lost their winning chance.
Off the back straight and Zipping Sullivan had opened up a comfortable lead and looked to be doing it easy while Lily Pad, Classic McLaren and Canya Go Wild tried hard to stay in touch. Into the front straight and down to the winning post Zipping Sullivan was in no danger and went on to win impressively by 3 lengths in a brilliant 29.93 for the 515m journey with Lily Pad holding of the fast finishing Classic McLaren for second.

Positive swab samples resulting from contamination by personal medication With a number of positive swab samples over the past 12 months or so resulting from contamination by personal medication, Stewards remind Trainers to be mindful of practices relating to the storage and taking of medicines. Trainers are advised to:
• Store medication well away from kennels and greyhound food preparation areas
• Avoid taking medication around greyhound feeding time
• Do not prepare or consume medication in your kennel area or food preparation areas
• Always wash hands immediately after taking medication
Stewards remind Trainers that although ingestion of personal medication by greyhounds may be unintentional and simply a case of lack of care and process, absolute liability lies with the Trainer to present greyhounds free of prohibited substances (GAR83).
Reminder - Hot Weather Policy reviewThe GRSA Hot Weather Policy was reviewed in March at an Industry Consultative Group Meeting. Some important changes have been made:
1) Early kennelling will be implemented if the temperature is expected to reach or exceed 35 degrees at kennelling time. Participants will be advised via text message.
2) Trainers will no longer be required to provide a Veterinary Certificate confirming that a greyhound suffers from heat stress to have a greyhound included on the Heat Stress Register.
3) Early kennelling will not be provided for day meetings. It will apply to twilight and night meetings only.
Please consult Stewards if you require clarification.

Compliance and Welfare

Covid-19 updateAgain, thank you to everyone for your efforts to keep COVID-19 compliance in the back of your minds. From your feedback, I added some extra-large check in posters in the kennel house at Angle Park, and re-designed the entry to Angle Park (general public), to make it less airport-like.
The Murray Bridge cup is coming up, and the team are working to finalise the COVID-Safe plan for the event. You will see the familiar signage and social distancing marks put up before the event.
Covid-19 – Stewards’ NoticesTo respond to COVID-19 developments that happen around the country, I streamlined our response to two places to look.
The first is the Stewards’ Notice named “COVID-19 Procedure All Tracks”. This tries to answer the questions about what you do when you attend a facility or travel. It includes internet links to various government sites and to the apps that the SA Government want us to use. The Notice is on the GRSA web page (go to ‘Integrity’, then ‘Rules and Policies’, then Stewards’ Notices).
The second Stewards’ Notice is “COVID-19 Nomination Restrictions” and relates to cross-border movement. Sometimes the government directions on cross-border change daily, so it is hard to keep up. This Notice tries to combine all the information into one document. I included a reference table so you can quickly identify the status of the borders. For our interstate guests, there is a step by step guide to applying for a SA cross-border permit. The Notice is also on the GRSA web page under Stewards’ Notices.
New local rulesYou can access the latest local rules on the GRSA web page (go to ‘Integrity’, then ‘rules and policies’). Please note, if you download your own copy, over time it might become outdated.
A recent amendment is to local rule 114, to include sub-rule (1A) that: “where a greyhound has been retired in accordance with GAR 106(3)(a), a registered person shall be guilty of a Serious Offence if the person sells or otherwise transfers ownership or custody of a greyhound to a third party into circumstances where they are aware, or ought to be aware, that the greyhound will be, or is likely to be euthanised or exist under conditions that are to its detriment”.
Also to rule 114, the GAP program was changed to Greyhounds as Pets.
Pink Card Applications – Stewards’ NoticeYou will see a new Stewards’ Notice on Pink Card applications.
The intent of this Notice is to give everyone a general guide on the process and time frames. As you all know, breeding is a time critical process and, from our end, a few pieces of information need to come together so the application can be processed. There are a lot of juggled balls in the air during the process, so if you have any problems with your application, or you want to know the status of a current application and have not heard for a while, please contact the Animal Welfare or Licencing Teams.
The Year Of ReviewThis year is a big year for reviewing the local rules and various policies and procedures.
We will roll these out over time and liaise with the ICG as the various reviews progress. When the opportunity presents itself, I encourage you to contact the ICG with your views or contact me directly.
Greyhound Of The YearI attended the Greyhound of the Year awards recently.
It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the night and celebrating the successes of the industry. Win, lose or draw, it takes a number of greyhounds to make a race that can be won, and to make that happen, you can all give yourselves a pat on the back for your dedication over the year – “on the shoulders of giants”.
Happy racing!

Angle Park 8’s Meal PromotionThe Angle Park 8’s promotion for Chasers Restaurant has been launched in the last week.
For groups of 8 or more who pre-buy either of the Angle Park 8’s meal deals below, if 3 greyhounds win from box 8, that group will receive the entire cost of their booking back:
• Drinks package offer: $55 per person = 1 main meal + 1 dessert + 2 hours drinks package (tap beer, house wine, soft drink and coffee)
• Non-drinks offer: $35 per person = 1 main meal + 1 dessert and 1 complimentary drink (tap beer, house wine, soft drink and coffee)
This promotion will work well as it generates group bookings for Chasers and also keeps patrons engaged with the racing, rather than a typical 2 for 1 meal offer that doesn’t keep patrons following the racing. The main T&C is that patrons must book before 11am on the Monday, this is to stop any sneaky patrons booking or not booking a table based on when the fields are released and what dogs are in box 8. Funnily enough we had 3 winners from box 8 last Thursday but the atmosphere should be great when the first Angle Park 8’s promotion is won by some lucky punters at the venue. Participants are open to partake in the promotion, however there are no industry discounts available.

Syndication getting underwayWe have been busy working on syndication in recent weeks, with the first Adelaide Greyhound Racing Club syndicate not far off being launched.
We have received a large number of enquiries from interested new owners and that was before we even had the greyhounds locked away! We have managed to source Weblec Rebel and Weblec Blade from the Lanigan Kennel in Melbourne thanks to the trainers and of course Neville Loechel. The dogs will be trained by Vadim Roz who is excited to get the dogs to the track in the next few weeks. Also thankyou to the AGRC for helping find the dogs and their involvement in setting up and managing the club syndicate.
If anyone is interested in training for their local club syndicate or also for private syndicates, please reach out to Sean Donnelly who can give you some more information and answer any questions you have. We look forward to syndication and new ownership growing in 2021!

Murray Bridge Cup in MarchIn just over a month we have the 2021 Daish Irrigation and Fodder Murray Bridge Cup upon us.
The Cup will have all the bells and whistles that we have had at previous cups including kids activities, live music and food and drink vans. Unfortunately we are still under COVID restrictions which restrict the total number of patrons in the venue. With a small list of sponsors, local politicians, club members, finalists and committees, there are very limited seats available for trainers. For any trainers who are racing but do not sit upstairs, we will provide a drink and food voucher as well as seating and some cover with marquee’s. The Murray Bridge committee and GRSA have worked on what the best option is for the night to try to help everyone but unfortunately with COVID we are unable to have everyone upstairs. We look forward to a great night of racing and activities for our industry and the general public - now we just pray for good weather up at the Bridge!
Greyhound of the Year AwardsOn January 30th we celebrated the 2020 TAB Greyhound of the Year Awards.
The event was held at Chasers Restaurant for the first time in a few years due to COVID restrictions and didn’t the venue look great. We had a bumper crowd of just under 200 people to watch one of the most tightly contested GOTY awards in recent years go to Sir Truculent. Thanks to all those who came for their attendance in what was a great night.

Tara Raceway didn’t see a great deal of Mumbannar-based trainer Monty Wilson last year. But when the border re-opened late in the year he was back in a flash. Finally, his life was back on track. And that observation was not made in jest.
For a bloke who long ago set himself a target of one win a month with his team of predominantly giveaway greyhounds, the year ended pretty well with six winners between October and December.
And this year has started pretty well, Wilson mixing it with the heavyweights of local greyhound racing with five wins, seven seconds and six thirds. Currently he sits in sixth spot on the 2021 Ian Badger Leading Trainer table.
On Sunday February 7th he trained a double with Sianna Magic and Saint Charlotte and shared the training honours for the day with Nicole Stanley, David Peckham and Dean Fennell.
Sianna Magic was actually one of the dogs he acquired once the border re-opening became imminent.
“I had been looking for a few dogs for the kennels so I contacted Dennington trainer Ray Drew to see if he could help me out,” Wilson said.
“He said to leave it with him and duly came up with a black bitch that had been sacked at breaking-in but one that he thought might be suitable for me to race in Mount Gambier.”
By Premier Fantasy out of Smooth Momentum, a beautifully bred daughter of Brett Lee x Shanghai Rose, Sianna Magic acquitted herself well on debut when running Aston Olenna to 1½ lengths in a heat of last month’s Razza Racing Feature Maiden (305 metres).
And in the following week’s final she finished second to Aston Olenna prior to opening her winning account last Sunday with
Monty makes up for lost time
an impressive 6½ lengths victory in the Metal Worx Maiden Stake (305 m).
Saint Charlotte, who led all the way in the Gambier Vets Mixed Stake (400 m) when defeating Ed Deeds by a length in 23.22 seconds, was purchased in a package deal after the syndicate that owned her disbanded.
Wilson’s done pretty well with the daughter of Lightning Frank and Jasmine Lilly, the brindle bitch having now won three races at Tara Raceway as well as recording a quick 22.94 seconds when running second to Hello I’m Jade last month.

Remote Lure at Murray Bridge Monday Trial Sessions (1-Turn Track)Management wishes to advise participants that the Steriline SafeChase lure (battery/remote) will now be used on the Murray Bridge 1-turn track for all Monday morning trial sessions, commencing this Monday 15th February.
This new technology has been operating successfully on the Murray Bridge straight track for over 18 months and GRSA wishes to commence utilising the lure on a circle track layout.
This testing is obviously a precursor for a transition away from cable lure systems at all SA tracks, which is a direction the national industry is headed towards.
Angle Park Track Redevelopment Progressing WellWhilst there is little information to provide in terms of an update, planning for the Angle Park track redevelopment has been feverishly occurring in the background.
GRSA is hopeful that in the coming weeks a date can be confirmed towards the end of March for the works to commence.

Happy days for Happy Harvey at Gawler
A pleasant summer evening brought out an excellent crowd to watch an interesting night of racing at Gawler on Sunday 31st January.
Race 4 on the program was a 400m event for Grade 6 dogs, which saw Select Some(1) take the lead immediately they jumped, but that did not last very long, as Happy Harvey shot around the field from his box 8 draw. Happy Harvey went on with the run, stretching his lead to six lengths as he crossed the finish line. Big prediction made up ground after being at the tail of the field early in the race, to finish second for Ross Panagiotou of Evanston Gardens, and Lektra Midnight (5) was third for Nicole Price of Lewiston.
Happy Harvey’s owners, Robert and Colleen Barclay, were pretty happy after the race as well, as the brindle dog has had a very restricted career. After seeing an advertisement for the sale of Happy Harvey and a littermate, the two unraced dogs then aged two, were purchased from Victoria. Success followed for Happy Harvey when he was able to win at his first two starts, which were both at Gawler. Minor injuries prevented Harvey from another win during his next few starts, and the trainer, Tim Ieraci and his partner Liz Harley suggested that that a spell from racing, and a change of trainer was worth considering. As Tim and Liz had a number
of their own pups ready to race, Robert and Colleen agreed, and engaged Mike Wittholz, who has trained for them before, to take over the training duties. After a four month break, Happy Harvey resumed at Gawler SUnday, 10th January, recording a third placing. That run set the scene for further improvement on Sunday 31st.
Despite nearing his third birthday in March, Happy Harvey has only raced on just nine occasions, for a tally of three wins and three thirds. Running a time of 22.97 secs in his latest win, Happy Harvey has shown
that he is capable of being competitive and can finally get to race more often.
Robert has had a long involvement of nearly 60 years in the industry, having been a trainer, and now as an owner. He and Colleen love the greyhounds, and they have three retirees, plus five pups nearing the education stage. Robert is optimistic about the future for the pups which are by top stud dog Fernando Bale from their racing female Gunnadoo Value which are being reared by Tim and Liz.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
TRAINERS FOR PUBLIC SYNDICATESGRSA is looking for South Australian trainers that we can partner with new syndicates and owners to help get new participants involved and grow the sport we love.
With a real determination to make syndication a success for the future of the code here in our state, GRSA recently created the role of Syndicate Coordinator to work as a conduit between the public and participants to help facilitate new and successful syndicates.
• Syndicates will choose their desired trainer from a list of those public trainers wishing to register.
• No contact details will be revealed to the syndicate until a meeting between the parties has occurred to ensure a correct fit for both trainer and syndicate.
• The process is designed to be as easy as possible for all parties, with the GRSA Syndication Coordinator assisting in the setting up and managing of the syndicates, as well as providing templates and contracts for the syndicate and trainers
• GRSA will ensure that syndicates are aware of the Syndicate Manager being the main point of contact with the trainer.
• Syndicates will also be fully aware of their obligations to the greyhound(s) in regards to post-racing and its entry into GAP SA or the home of a syndicate member.
Essential criteria for trainers:
• Registered as a public trainer • Excellent communication skills and commitment to engage with syndicate members • A willingness to help make syndication an enjoyable experience • An excellent animal welfare record • A positive attitude • Any basic experience with Facebook and social media to help communicate with the syndicate is an advantage.
In return, the GRSA Syndicate Coordinator will facilitate that trainers are only having to deal with the Syndicate Manager and will help present available options of greyhounds for purchase with the final decision that of the syndicate with hopefully input from the trainer.
We are in the early stages of this process and GRSA hopes we can all work together to ensure this is a success for all involved.
For more information and to send your expression of interest please email sean.donnelly@grsa.com.au or call Sean at the office on 8243 7102

ANGLE PARKSINGLE TRIALS A reminder to trainers that single trials can be booked with two greyhounds however you need to advise when booking of your intention to do this. If you wish to put three or more into this trial then a field trial will have to be booked.
BOOKING NUMBER FOR TRIALS Participants wishing to book trials are required to ring 8243 7172, this phone line will only be used for trial bookings and will queue participants. By having this one number with participants queuing makes this process to be a more efficient way of booking trials.
There will be NO trials accepted through the normal administration number. To be fair to everyone GRSA will only accept bookings using the new number or alternatively logon to trialbooker.com, create an account and book your own trials.
POLICY FOR TRIALLING AT ANGLE PARK, GAWLER AND MURRAY BRIDGE BEFORE THE RACE MEETINGPolicy BackgroundPolicy Background
This policy is to detail the procedure for trainers seeking greyhounds to trial before race meetings. This policy is effective from 2 May 2019.
Race Meeting Trial PolicyRace Meeting Trial Policy
This policy is in place for the following race meetings:
Angle Park Monday, Gawler Wednesday and Sunday, Murray Bridge Tuesday and Friday.
Two fields from the boxes with a maximum of four (4) greyhounds. Trials may be conducted at any time during the race meeting from immediately after kenneling until after the last race, at Stewards’ discretion.
The following lists the order in which greyhounds will be selected in the event if more than eight (8) greyhounds are nominated:
1. Reserves at the meeting that do not obtain a start
2. Trainers that have greyhounds engaged and are located more than 100km in distance from the track
3. Satisfactory trials
Procedure/criteriaProcedure/criteria
1. For Angle Park Monday night, the trainer is to contact GRSA between 9am and 10am on Monday to nominate. Should the Monday be a public holiday bookings are to be made between 8am and 9am on the scratching number.
2. For Murray Bridge Tuesday & Friday, the trainer is to contact GRSA between 3pm and 4pm the day before.
3. For Gawler Wednesday, the trainer is to contact GRSA between 3pm and 4pm the day before. For Gawler Sunday, the trainer is to contact the scratching number on Sunday between 8am and 9am.
4. Other than reserve greyhounds, trainers will be restricted to trialling one (1) greyhound unless nominations determine otherwise.
5. Stewards will allocate the box for the greyhound.
6. Trials will be 515m, 530m & 531m in distance as first preference. Other distances considered depending on nominations.
7. Greyhounds currently under suspension are ineligible to trial unless they are undertaking a satisfactory trial to be cleared.
8. Greyhound registration cards must be produced at kennelling time.
9. Trainers with other greyhounds engaged can utilise the extra kennel space until such time they are ready to leave. Trainers with no other greyhounds engaged will be permitted to leave with Stewards permission.
10. In the case of race at Murray Bridge, trials will only be available on the track that is prepared to race that day i.e. Sunday meeting on the u-shaped track, trials will be on the u-shaped track only.
Please note: If there are 12 races at Angle Park, Gawler or Murray Bridge there will be NO trials.
The Angle Park Vet Clinic and/or swab kennels cannot be used to accommodate any additional greyhounds due to operational requirements of the Clinic and Stewards.
It is vital that trainers nominate to trial at these race meetings. If you are unable to nominate at these times, please contact GRSA as soon as possible as permission may be given at GRSA’s discretion to accept bookings outside these times.
QUALIFYING AND SATISFACTORY TRIALS Angle Park qualifying and satisfactory trials are held every Tuesday night between 6.50pm and 7.15pm. Qualifying will be for the following Monday or Tuesday (drawn Thursday) meetings. Nominations close at 12.30pm on the Tuesday.
Gawler qualifying and satisfactory trials are held every Friday morning from 7am. Qualifying will be for the Sunday meeting (drawn the following week). Nominations close at 12.30pm on the Thursday.

Kennel Capers FEBRUARY 2021 25
Exceptions to this policyExceptions to this policy
Thursday nights are kept available for interstate greyhounds to solo trial in a lead-up to SA Group races as well as local greyhound’s trialling for Group racing interstate.
Upon request, local greyhounds will be allowed to solo trial in a lead-up to a feature race and they will take one of the eight (8) kennels available for trialling greyhounds ahead of the policy and sit separate to the four (4) dog trials. Races considered to be a feature are: Adelaide Cup, Gawler Cup, Oaks, Derby, Howard Ashton, Brian Johnstone, SA Sprint, SA Distance Championship, SA Anniversary Cup, SA Country Cup, National Finals and any interstate Group race
Local greyhounds will be permitted to trial on a race night, where they are in preparation for a feature event, nominated for a meeting and the race does not stand up. This will include all distances and also take precedence over the policy. If a greyhound qualifies for a feature final and requires a trial in between, this will be conducted as a solo trial and will sit separately to the four (4) dog trials.
MOUNT GAMBIER SATISFACTORY TRIALSTrainers are advised of a change to the booking of Satisfactory Trials at Mt. Gambier. Mt Gambier hold trials on Tuesday and Saturday mornings with Satisfactory trials ONLY being conducted on Tuesdays and need to be booked with Barry Shepheard from the Club on 0419 824 512.
At Race meetings Satisfactory trials can be done when less than 12 races. When there are 12 races these can be considered, however, the trainer will not be able to kennel and must take their greyhounds home straight after the trial. These race day trials will also need to be booked through Barry at the Club. GRSA administration staff will NOT accept these bookings and trainers will be directed to contact Barry Shepheard.

FACT SHEET
Get Bushfire Ready
Summer here we come!As summer fast approaches the landscape will continue to dry out, growth from winter and spring rains will creates an abundance of fuel for bushfires that may affect you and your dogs.
If you live in, travel through or visit bushfire risk areas it is critical that you recognise the need to have a plan and be prepared. The risk is real and you should be prepared for the worst at all times. The consequences can be both devastating and terrifying, so why risk it?
Here are some points to be seriously considered when getting your property ready for summer and help greatly reduce the risk of being adversely affected by a bushfire:
• Clean out your gutters on sheds and buildings keeping them free from debris such as leaves and bark. Removing branches of trees that are overhanging any of your buildings is advised.
• Create a defendable space around your home by reducing vegetation
• Rake up leaves and removed excess rubbish and debris from around buildings and other structurers
• Move flammable objects away from house
• Ensure you have a well-stocked emergency kit
• Place wire ‘ember’ mesh over wall vents
• Ensure your dogs and cats are identified and registered in case you become separated.
• Ensure your pets’ vaccinations are up to date in case they need to be placed in kennels.
• Be sure you can adequately restrain or confine your pets as it may become frightened and distressed.
• Have an appropriate container, vehicle or equipment to transport your animal.
If you are planning to leave early in the event of a bushfire, consider what items you may need to include in your emergency kit for your pets, suggestions include:
• Plastic containers for water and food
• Small amounts of pet food
• Suitable bedding
• Pet medication
• Animal documentation such as identification and vaccination certificates
• Update your 5 Min Bushfire Plan – don’t have one… make your our 5 Minute Plan today by visiting the CFS website and take all precautions necessary. Follow this link for more details: https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/bebushfireready/index.html
Remember to also think of others in the community and alert them to potential hazards and check on them in the event a bushfire occurs.
• If you have to leave your home during the day you will need to decide whether to take your animals to a safer place.
• Keep in mind that, if there is a fire, you may not be able to return to your home for some time.
• If you are home, keep your pets inside (where possible).
• Check you have the necessary pet items in your emergency kit if you plan to leave early.
• Have somewhere pre-arranged to accept your animals (if large number are being moved).
• When leaving your home keep all dogs on a lead and confine other animals in cages or suitable carrying devices.
• Cover cages with a woollen blanket to minimise distress and secure all pets in a car or vehicle that provides adequate protection for transportation.
