1 2 T H M A Y 1 9 2 1 The Tweed Heads Bowls Club was founded in 1921 by a group of dedicated people with a pioneering spirit who wanted to build a firm foundation for future progress. The Club, known as Tweed Heads Coolangatta Bowling Club started life on the banks of the beautiful Tweed River directly under Point Danger in a modest Clubhouse. In 1975 a new Clubhouse was built on land purchased by the Clubs forefathers on Greenbank Island, not far from the original site.

Members at Coral Street, Tweed Heads, NSW, on the green in the 1920’s

1 9 4 1 Our first President, Mr Charles Morley, was also awarded the Clubs first Life Membership.

This honour was bestowed on Mr Morley for his loyal service to the Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Bowling Club for over 20 years.

A total of 28 life members have been recognised over the decades and we honour their memory and thank them for their commitment.

1 9 4 8 After several meetings, the Club members agreed that due to a large increase in membership the separation of the Club was a logical decision. Coolangatta Bowling Club moved to Coolangatta and the Coral Street Club began to function as it is known today; Tweed Heads Bowls Club.

2 4 T H M A Y 1 9 7 5 With a rapid growth in both ladies and men’s membership, the committee knew it was time to make a move from Coral Street. On 24th May 1975, the new Clubhouse in Florence Street opened its doors.

1 9 8 0 The Indoor Green was officially opened by the President Sid Flodine and past presidents Ron de Hayr and Harry Rouse.

Over the years, the Indoor Green has played host to many notable bowling events including the World Team Cup Challenge, Tri Nations Series and Mazda Jack High.

The Indoor Green at Tweed Heads Bowls Club is one of the most iconic in the world.

In 1988, the Australian Indoor Championships were held for the first time, but only featured as a mens event. It was not until 2003 that the first female Australian Indoor Championship was played.

Still to this day, no other bowls club has played host to the Australian Indoor Championships.

For our members and visitors, the Indoor Green is loved and is used every day of the week.

1 9 7 8 In September 1978, The Auditorium opened its doors for the first time. The Auditorium which seated 400 people, showcased top line Australian and International artists.

This season we’re all about sharing menu items that are inspired by the cooler months. This year we celebrate a major milestone. So for our 100th Anniversary, our creative Bistro 16 chefs have come up with some traditional and authentic bistro food as well as some favourites from around the world. International dishes include Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, Italian and everywhere in between.

In a hurry? We have express meals from $11.90* at lunch and $16.50* at dinner or Roast of the Day for $14.50*. (*members price)

Grilled Sirloin Steak With beer battered fries and salad

NEW TO THE MENU

Lamb KoftaThe creamy sauce is to die for. Lamb Kofta is full of flavour with spiced lamb mince made on a skewer and shaped like a torpedo. It is served with Lebanese salad, pita bread, hummus and tzatziki. A hint of cinnamon is the secret ingredient in lamb koftas and it makes them so distinctly middle eastern.Grilled Prawn Soft TacosSoft tacos filled with juicy grilled prawns and chipotle slaw, guacamole salsa and sour cream. Top with a spritz of lime juice and torn fresh herbs; they are yummy.Massaman Beef CurryThis delicious slow cooked beef Massaman curry is rich and falls apart. Enveloped in a spicy curry sauce with fragrant Jasmine rice, vegetables, peanuts and yoghurt. This is the perfect comfort food. Grilled Sirloin SteakOur new grilled sirloin steak served with beer battered fries and salad or vegetables. A definite crowd favourite.

Bistro 16 Terrace is the highlight of Bistro 16. It provides the perfect spot to enjoy delicious sweets such as tiramisu, chocolate mousse or crème caramel baked by our in-house bakery chefs in a relaxed environment.

There is a reason why we have called ourselves the Home of Handcrafted Food. Our meats are carefully selected and prepared by our in-house butcher, our fruit and vegetables come from the Tweed Valley and our desserts are made by our in-house Pastry Chefs. How more authentic can that be?

Tweed Heads Bowls Club plays an integral part in supporting the community. In 46 years, Tweed Heads Bowls Club has donated over $9 million to community groups and the game of Lawn Bowls. Some of these community groups would simply not exist without support from the Club. It is not just cash donations that have made a difference, it is the gift vouchers, BBQ packs and room hire waivers that we have donated to these groups to use in their fund -raising efforts that make a huge difference. We have SUPPORTED over 1,000 community groups. Here are just a few.

L I N D I S F A R N E S C H O O LIn 1980, Priest, Canon Ray Dyson from St Cuthbert’s Church in Tweed Heads approached one of our bowling members while walking past the Club one day. He asked if the Tweed Heads Bowls Club would loan the Church $50,000 to build a school on Sunshine Avenue, South Tweed Heads. Ten years earlier Canon Dyson had helped the Club obtain their liquor license after there was an outcry from two local churches in the immediate vicinity of the Club. The loan amount was approved by the Club and the school was successfully built. The Club decided that the loan was to be declared a donation, and that is how Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School started.

T W E E D H O S P I T A LThe Tweed Heads hospital that is located next to the Club was another recipient of a generous donation, the Club donated $500,000 to help build the hospital back in the 1980s.

S H A P I N G O U T C O M E SFor many years now Tweed Heads Bowls Club has supported Shaping Outcomes in many different ways, including cash donations, fundraising prizes and BBQ lunches for the families who are involved with the program.

Shaping outcomes is a non-profit community organisation and registered National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider. They offer flexible and personalised early childhood intervention programs and services, that build on the strengths and increase the abilities of children with disabilities or delays in learning. Working as a team with their families and the community surrounding them to help them grow to their capacity.

The team at Shaping Outcomes celebrate the differences in each child, coordinating a service package that best suits a child’s needs and funding. Their programs and services are consistent with early childhood education, inclusion and disability philosophies. They utilise interaction through play and daily routines, to promote growth and development in children which create a foundation for future learning in schooling systems, and life. Teaching and helping children and their families develop the skill they need to take part in everyday activities within their families and their community. Mr Colin Asher CEO of Shaping Outcomes said that the support that is provided by the Tweed Heads Bowls Club makes not only a real difference to the children in the program but to their parents and families. We would like to reiterate our thanks on behalf of everyone here at Shaping Outcomes and from the children and families that directly benefited from the support. We congratulate Tweed Heads Bowls Club on their 100 year anniversary.

L O O K G O O D F E E L B E T T E RTweed Heads Bowls Club has been hosting the Look Good Feel Better program here at the Club for many years. Look Good Feel Better is a wonderful organisation that supports people in our community who are fighting cancer. Facing Cancer with confidence is their moto and for over twenty years they have provided workshops for the Tweed Heads Community. During this time over 2,000 patients have benefited from attending a Look Good Feel Better Program where they are taught the tips and techniques to help deal with the appearance related side effects of cancer treatments. Tweed Heads Bowls Club are proud to be a vital host partner for this talented bunch of volunteers and we were very proud to be presented with a “thank you” plaque in recognition.

S U P P O R T I N G O U R L O C A L K I D S T H R O U G H C L U B G R A N T SThroughout the years THBC has supported many of our local schools and kindergartens with donations towards BBQ packs, sporting equipment, reading programs and achievement certificates. It is always a great pleasure to be invited along to attend many of the end of year award ceremonies and hear first-hand the achievements of some of our local children. As their names are called out and their academic achievements are announced their parents, guardians and teachers must be so proud of them.

M I N I M A S T E R C L A S S A T S T J O S E P H ’ S S C H O O L

Tweed Heads Bowls Club Sous Chef, Steve Cherry and apprentice chef Abby Goodwin participated in the International Chefs day back in 2018.

Back in 2018, Steve and Abby used International Chefs day to teach kids from St Joseph’s school Tweed Heads about the importance of healthy eating in a fun-filled workshop. Abby prepared a healthy strawberry and banana milkshake while Steve cooked a fantastic broccoli cup. Steve wanted to share his experience of being a chef and be involved in his community to educate kids on food. The children were very interested and eager to learn more on how to cook yummy healthy food. Steve’s broccoli cup was a hit. Children kept asking for more. The event was organised by Chef, Paul Rifkin from the Australian Culinary Federation.

T W E E D H E A D S B O W L S C L U B R E L A Y F O R L I F E Back in 2015 the Team took part in Relay For Life.

Relay For Life is a chance for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them. The relay also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer’. In 2015, THBC staff put on their walking shoes and took turns around the track at the overnight event at Kingscliff to raise money. Staff lined up again to show their support again on Saturday 12th March 2016.

Pictured far left is Gordana Pilgrim the state manager of the Look Good Feel Better Program, with just some of the many volunteers who dedicate their time to this great program.

Tweed Clubs recognise that we are the hub of our communities and play an important role in the social welfare of our towns so we were delighted to be given the opportunity to become naming right sponsor for Vinnies Community sleepout.

“We understand the significant issue of homelessness, not only in our local area but across the region with homelessness becoming a terrible reality for people from all walks of life” said Mr Gerard Robinson, CEO of THBC.

Mr Robinson went on to say “Witnessing first-hand the great work that organisations like Fred’s Place do and the impact they have on the less fortunate in our community has been an inspiration to all of us who represent the Tweed Clubs and we look forward to supporting this worthy cause into the future”.

The THBC team took part in Vinnies Community Sleepout. They slept out with just a sleeping bag and some cardboard boxes to protect them from the elements. Well-done Team!

it’s good to know we’re helping to raise funds at the same time. The THBC team qualified for the final was a fantastic effort.

The many schools and festivals around our Shire are assisted by joint funding from our local Clubs through the Club Grants scheme.

Tweed Heads Bowls Club is proud to be actively involved in supporting our many local schools including primary schools, high schools, local kindergartens and student scholarship programs throughout the Tweed area.

Over the years the students that have benefited from funding and other types of support have gone on to achieve great things. To watch our local children grow and learn through the many initiatives which have been financially assisted by local Clubs like THBC is a wonderful experience and every club member should be proud to be a part of that. It’s your Club making a real difference in our community.

In 2012, THBC provided $7,000 as part of joint funding to the Tweed River High School to assist its under privileged students. School Principal Leisa Conroy said THBC had supported the school through the Club Grants scheme for many years. “Together with funds from other participating clubs, we have been able to provide invaluable support to our students”.

2 0 2 0 S U P P O R T F O R B U S H F I R E R E L I E F A N D R E C O V E R YWith Australia experiencing one of the worst bushfire seasons on record, people from all over the country came together to help the communities and affected wildlife. The bravery of our volunteer fire fighters, emergency services and animal rescue groups was inspiring and incredibly heart-warming during this sad time. THBC team members Sandy Paxton and Vivienne Barker could not stand by and watch without taking some action to assist. Sandy and Vivienne, both wives of fire fighters sent out a call for support from THBC staff and members to help those people left with nothing.

Donations were sought for non-perishable care necessities and within days we had a room full of boxes filled with canned foods, water, toiletries, clothes, toys and linen. Doug Fuller, THBC Facilities Manager dropped the donated goods to the pickup zone in Pottsville where they were transported to the affected areas and delivered to those in need. This was an enormous team effort and everybody can be very proud of their efforts.

As part of a larger Bushfire appeal on Friday 17th of January 2020, Tweed Heads Bowls Club conducted a Club wide fundraiser to raise money for the NSW Fire Service, the Red Cross and Wires, with members and staff dressed in yellow and orange to show their support for our RFS heroes.

All proceeds from the raffles and bingo on the day were donated along with $1 from every main meal sold and $1 from every schooner sold throughout the Club. Our Social bowlers got right behind the event and generously donated all money raised from social bowls for the entire week!

With members and guests giving generously, the THBC board agreed to match all funds raised $1 for $1 and this combined effort saw a total of $10,000 raised.

Whether you love our vanilla slices, prefer the cream-filled lamingtons or drool over the apple turnovers in the dessert cabinets, there is always something to satisfy.

Over the years, dozens of trendy and premium bakeries have popped up around the Gold Coast and Tweed regions. They all vary wildly in style and influence from upscale patisseries to artisan bread making. A lot of hospitality venues over the years have outsourced their pastry and bakery requirements resulting in the same or similar product being offered at many locations with one venue not really standing out from the next, so no real point of difference.

At THBC, we have always been known for the quality of our food and the commitment

to sourcing local produce whilst serving the freshest ingredients. Our cakes, slices, pastries and desserts are some of our most popular choices for members and the fact that they are made right here on site at our bakery ensures quality and freshness.

Our bakery was opened 26 years ago in 1994. Since then every day our pastry chefs’ start early in the morning to prepare, bake and craft all of the items available in The Café, nineteen21 restaurant and Bistro 16 as well as the delicious afternoon teas served during Bowls. Our team run a professional kitchen and are highly skilled in the making of pastries, desserts, breads and our ever-popular savoury pies.

The team are immensely proud to bake and deliver more than 84,824 freshly baked items each year and they look forward to delivering all of your fresh favourites.

The focus has, and always will be to offer the very best for our members and guests.

To celebrate our 100 year anniversary, The Café has come up with a sweet surprise for members, $9 for any cake with a large coffee from Monday to Thursday, 10am to 4pm until Thursday 13th May.

HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED BAREFOOT BOWLS?

Barefoot bowls is an Australian spin on the traditional game, with music, drinks, fun and food, and as the name implies, no shoes. Barefoot Bowls is the perfect game to play with friends and family under lights or on a Sunday afternoon. Barefoot Bowls is easy to learn, and you will get the hang of it very quickly after our volunteers show you the ropes. Our volunteers take immense pride in helping newcomers understand the rules and play the game in a fun environment. The game is ideal for team building, get-togethers, corporate social events and parties.

LAWN BOWLS FOR BEGINNERS Barefoot bowls is a great way to try lawn bowls and have fun in a group environment. It could be for a work get together, birthday party, bucks or hens party or just a group of friends that want to catch up and try something new. You can have a group of two people to over 100 people. Below are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Make sure you have a hat and sunscreen2. We have water fountains available or the bar is nice and close

for a cold beverage3. Listen to the volunteers who will guide you through the safety

aspect before you get started. 4. You play lawn bowls on a green. Each green is numbered5. On each green there are what we call “rinks”, similar to an alley

in ten pin bowling. These rinks are separated by a boundary peg.

6. The aim of the game is to get your bowls closer than your opponent to what we call the “Jack” (small white ball).

7. Each player can play up to four bowls each depending on how many players for each team.

8. The bowls are made in different sizes for big kids or little kids. Each bowl has what we call a bias (weighted to one side) This allows the bowl to curve in on an angle. So, the idea is to step out off a bowls mat on your rink and roll the bowl out on an angle and allow the bowl to head in the direction of the jack. The person who is closest to the jack scores a shot for that end.

9. A game can go for up to 21 ends, but we recommend a barefoot bowls party to last for 2 hours. This gives you time to mingle, have a drink, enjoy the club’s fabulous food and try and beat your mates in a game of bowls.

10. Barefoot bowls can be played by everyone no matter what age or disability. We have small rubber bowls for children to have a go as well.

11. Don’t forget we do free barefoot bowls every Sunday 3pm to 6pm or you can make a booking for anytime you like. We have lights on our greens and also have a world class indoor facility, so it does not matter what the weather is like.
