BIG WEEK: 82-year-old old John Wellman of Tokoroa talks bikeswith new White Ribbon ambassador David Warren, who was riding a1950 Norton International, in Te Awamutu Thursday afternoon. MrWellman, a former rider, also caught up with the ride in Tokoroa onSaturday. But on Tuesday evening Mr Wellman had gone missing inhis hometown after his scooter slipped and toppled down a bank inthe rain. He spent six hours trapped in a ditch, entangled in gorseand blackberry until he was found by searchers.

It was only a small crowdwhich greeted the White RibbonRide at Te Awamutu’s MegaCentre Thursday afternoon, butthat wasn’t important accordingto White Ribbon Campaign Trustchairman Ric Odom.

He was part of the team thatrode into town as part of theannual awareness event and saysthe support of communitiesthroughout New Zealand,whether big or small, was whatmattered.

He said community strength

was measured in the way peopletreated each other, and the cam-paign was about getting the mess-age across one person at a time.

Riders from the Patriot Motor-cycle Club and Te Ahi Kikohawere in Te Awamutu, hosted byViolence Free Waipa and WaipaDistrict Council, and wentaround the local Mega Centreshops asking men to take theWhite Ribbon Pledge.

Mr Odom says their messageis simple — no violence is OK, butspecifically men must ‘pledge’ notto be violent towards theirwomen.

We could need that ‘potable’ waterThe Waipa District Council

Construction Site for the newwater reservoir on FrontierRoad is consuming between6000-15,000 litres of water perwater tanker — this is a hugeamount of water and can servicemany families.

Also, there are more appro-priate times during the year tobe building the new water reser-voir when water is not a scarcecommodity.

Whether the water is beingused for dust suppression under

the Resource Management Act/District Plan or required for theconsolidation of the foundationsubstrate.

Whilst the water being usedon the construction site maywell not be ‘potable’ watersupply, there is every possibilitythat if we enter a drought thatthis water may well be the key tosaving our district — as it can betreated to make it ‘potable’ i.e.drinkable.

Does it not seem ironic thatin a time of restrictions (Water

Alert 1 for Waipa/ Waikato/Hamilton Regions) when wateris a restricted commodity, thatWaipa District Council arefrivolously wasting it on theconstruction site.

One would expect Waipa Dis-trict Council to lead by exampleand restrict/conserve their usetoo.

Waipa District Council, be alot more water conscious whenyou expect the residents to dothe same.

Council responds: Wethank Mr Woods forhighlighting water restrictionsand agree with him that water isa valuable commodity. Thereare significant cost efficienciesfor ratepayers in building thereservoir during summermonths when conditions arebetter for earthworks. The wateron site, which cannot economic-ally be treated and made potable,is sourced from a nearby quarryand is being as used as sparinglyas possible.

College the bestIt is with a touch of

sadness that I attendedmy daughter’s lastsenior prizegiving andthe end of her time at TeAwamutu College.

We were fortunate tohave two hard workingchildren go through thecollege and for them andtheir friends there havebeen plenty of opportun-ities academically, insport and music withsome great teachersacross the subjects.

Outdoor Educationisn’t offered at allschools and I recom-mend anyone to give it ago. It develops great per-sonal and team skillsand run by some enthu-siastic teachers.

The schoolproductions are some-thing great to beinvolved in.

The Excellence andGraduation Dinners andthe Senior Ball are allwonderful events. Tohave these top studentsevery year go throughand give others some-thing to strive for is veryimpressive for Te Awa-mutu College.

Time to conserve waterWaipa residents are

urged to be smart aboutwater use early this yearfollowing a summerdrought and dry winter.

Waipa joined Hamil-ton and Waikato Districtin going to Alert Level 1 topre-empt tighter restric-tions later in summer.

Water Alert Level 1means residents can usetheir sprinklers between

6-8am and 6-8pm, withhand-held hoses allowedat any time.

Waipa District Councilwater services managerLorraine Kendrick saidthe early restrictionswere necessary as thewater supply levels hadn’treally recovered since lastsummer.

‘‘The drought followedby a dry winter has meant

our water supply sourceshave not returned to theirpre-drought position.

‘‘We are starting on theback foot this year withlimited buffer and noroom for complacency.

‘‘We need residents’help early to avoid goingto higher alert levels andto help us manage thesupply of a precious andlimited water resource.’’

Public help Police nab sex offenderPolice investigating a sexual

assault on an elderly woman at a TeAwamutu hotel last week say com-munity support was crucial inidentifying and locating the offender.

Detective Dean Schrader of the TeAwamutu CIB said Police were calledto the hotel after the woman wasstartled by an intruder in her room.

‘‘The offender made sexual

advances that the victim tried to wardoff before he eventually assaulted her.Her screams alerted other occupantsin the hotel and her attacker fled.

‘‘The community gave crucial helpto Police resulting in the arrest of a34-year-old Te Kuiti man on Friday,’’he said.

The accused appeared in HamiltonDistrict Court yesterday."

A small amount ofmercury at the Te Awa-mutu Courier caused alarge scale hazardresponse on Thursdayafternoon when thepoison was spilled in thefront office.

Staff were sorting anddisposing of paperworkwhen a small containerof mercury was found inthe safe.

The old containerwasn’t sealed properlyand a small amountspilled in the front office.

Mercury is the onlymetal that is a liquid inits natural form and canbe poisonous if thevapour is inhaled.

Te Awamutu Couriermanager Alan Price saysthe advice was to call theemergency services andhave the buildingdecontaminated.

Staff that had beenworking in the officewere also assessed.

Mr Price says itlooked like overkill forsuch a small amount ofmercury, but it was bet-ter to be safe than sorry.

Hamilton basedEnviro Clean & Resto-ration cleaned the officebefore we re-opened laterthan usual Friday morn-ing.

Courier staff foundmore of the spilt mercuryin the safe on Fridayafternoon and the office

was again closed andEnviro Clean & Resto-ration returned toremove the offendingmaterial.

The specific use ofmercury in the printingindustry is a bit of amystery, although it ispossible it was used in

either the early photoprinting or platemakingprocesses.

It is recognised by theWorld Health Organisa-tion as an occupationalhazard, with specificrules about exposure andprocedures to containand clean spills.

Back to bikebasics time

If would like to return to cycling inorder to get fitter, but need moreconfidence; have a little cycling experi-ence, but want practical tips; needadvice on bike and helmet safety — orwant to learn how to fix a puncture or achain problem, don’t panic help is onthe way.

Two free Back on Your BikeWorkshops for adults will take place inTe Awamutu next Monday (Bike Main-tenance) and Thursday (Cycle Skills).

The workshops run from 5.30-7.30pmat the Te Awamutu Netball courts.

This booklet has list of events andcontacts relating to cycling within theWaipa district.

The booklets are presently availableon a display stand at the Te AwamutuEvents Centre or you can contact SportWaikato directly to obtain a copy.

Cycle survey resultsBanishing all cars from

urban areas was one of the moreradical responses to a recentcycling survey that attractedmore than 80 responses.

The online survey conductedover three weeks by WaipaDistrict Council will help todevelop a cycling implemen-tation plan for the district.Council also held twoworkshops attended by nearly40 people.

The respondent whosuggested banishing cars saidvehicles should be ‘put under-ground, or in tiny, narrow lanesaway from human habitation.’

There were also requests forsmoother seal, shoulder widen-ing and better signage.

Manager Road CorridorDawn Inglis said cycling playeda strong part in Waipa com-munities and council was keento understand where usersthought money should be spentto make it safer and moreattractive for cyclists.

‘‘Our aim was to get theviews of cyclists in the district to

inform an implementation planthat will guide where we spendour cycling dollars over thecoming five to 10 years. In thecurrent plan we only have$50,000 per year to spend acrossthe district and we need to makesure we are clever about howthat is allocated,’’ she said.

The types of cyclists variedfrom commuters, to schoolstudents, to recreational usersand mountain bikers andsolutions for each of them couldbe vastly different.

Other suggestions included:● A Te Awamutu to Kihikihi

link;● Linking the Avantidrome

to Cambridge and on to Kara-piro;

● Linking cycle routes tokey cultural and recreationsites;

● Mountain biking facilities;● Developing touring routes;● More education and

awareness.The feedback is currently

being considered, prioritisedand where appropriate, costed.

Summer reading get kids crackingA summer reading pro-

gramme at the Waipa districtlibraries over December andJanuary aims to get childrenexcited about reading from anearly age.

The nationwide pro-gramme, which has beenaround in parts of New Zea-land for 17 years, is free tochildren aged five to 12 years.

Only 70 spaces are avail-able at each library on a first-

come, first-served basis.Registrations open on

Monday, December 2 with the‘summer beach read’ themedprogramme running fromDecember 16, through to Janu-ary 22.

District librarian AlisonGordon said the programmeswere always popular and oftenover-subscribed.

‘‘The idea of the pro-gramme is to promote and

encourage young people tobecome readers early on inlife and summer holidays is agreat time to do that. Thenumbers are limited becauseof the space and staff we haveavailable during a busylibrary period,’’ she said.

Children on the pro-gramme must visit the libraryat least three times to meetwith a librarian. At each visitthey receive a small incentive

plus help to find books.For those children who fin-

ish the programme specialparties are held at eachlibrary where they are pre-sented with a certificate, amedal and a free book. Therewill also be food and enter-tainment.

Children wishing to par-ticipate should register theirinterest at their local libraryfrom next Monday.

Water reservoir takes a breather

It may look like work hasstopped at the site of TeAwamutu’s new water reser-voir on Frontier Road, but it is

all part of the plan.The site has been prepared

for the building, and a load ofdirt has been spread over the

area where the reservoir willsit.

This will now be left forabout three months to allow

the dirt to completely compact,at which stage it will be able totake the weight of the reser-voir and water.

Te Awamutu’s Tegan Crottyhas been confidently travellingon Waikato’s public buses thisyear thanks to an event sheattended for disabled and olderpeople 12 months ago.

The teenager was amongabout 40 people in electric andmanual wheelchairs, othersusing walking frames andsticks, and one with a guide dogwho turned out to ‘have a go’ onthe buses last year.

It was such a success thatanother event, organised byCCS Disability Action and Wai-kato Regional Council, is beingheld next Tuesday, December 3between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Tegan had just finished herschooling at the time of lastyear’s event and intendedstudying in Hamilton this year,but had never travelled on apublic bus.

‘‘It was great having thetime to figure out how to get onthe buses in my wheelchair,because they’re not all thesame, and it gave me theconfidence I needed to travelon them this year,’’ said the19-year-old.

‘‘For the first half of theyear I travelled at least fourdays a week between Te Awa-mutu and Hamilton by bus toattend my course. Not havingto rely on my parents, beingindependent, has been a realboost to my confidence,’’ shesaid.

The regional council’s act-ing public transport oper-ations manager, Ben Barlow,said: ‘‘We had a fantastic

response from people last yearwho had wanted to travel bybus around the city, but hadpreviously been worried abouthow to get on board.’’

For this year’s ‘have a go’day, an Orbiter and urbangreen bus, supplied by buscompanies Pavlovich and GoBus, will be parked in CaroStreet for people to get onboard.

‘‘This day provides a safe,non-threatening environmentfor both existing and potentialnew passengers to askquestions and to have a go atgetting on the bus, buying aticket and putting on theseatbelt fitted for wheelchairusers.

‘‘It is also an opportunityfor people to become familiarwith our bus timetables andticketing options, as well as toreassure them that driverswill help passengers if theyask,’’ Mr Barlow said.

Afterwards, staff will alsobe on hand at the TransportCentre in Bryce Street wherepeople can familiarise them-selves with the platform layoutand the ticketing systems.

More than 80 per cent of theregion’s public buses areaccessible, with another 10new low floor vehicles due tojoin the Hamilton fleet in thefirst quarter of 2014.

Junats get hands-on experienceQuin Adams of Morrinsville (centre

front) found the koi carp trap andprocessor amazing during a recent visitto the facilities at Lake Waikare innorth Waikato.

He was part of a Hamilton JuniorNaturalist Club (Junats) contingentwhich had the set up explained to themby Waikato Regional Council staff.

Koi carp are a significant pest in theWaikato River and the trial facilities atLake Waikare are designed to trap themand then process them into a fertiliserfor growing riparian plants that helpprotect the lake. The trial is beingsupported financially by the WaikatoRiver Authority.

‘‘The kids had a great day out —never a dull moment, particularly whenthey saw dozens of huge live carphurtling towards them down the fishtrap chute,’’ said project spokesmanDave Byers of the council’s biosecurityand heritage team.

‘‘It’s great to be able to help spreadinformation on protecting the environ-ment by working with groups such asJunats.’’

Junats is for young people, aged 10 to

18, who have a keen interest in naturalhistory, science and the outdoors.

The trial is being run through theAuckland allergy clinic in associationwith Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.Waikato testing as part of the trial willbe done in Hamilton on December 13.The test will involve a ‘prick test’ and aquestionnaire.

People taking part will need to stayoff medication for three days before-hand.

The announcement comes as thecouncil has been getting its usualseasonal rise in the number of calls

about privet as the plants flower inspring.

‘There is no definitive proof thatprivet causes allergic reactions butpeople do raise privet as an issueaffecting their health, and we’re keen tounderstand more about how they’re

affected,’ said Mr Embling.Under Waikato’s rules, land owners

or occupiers are required to controlprivet on their property if a validhealth-related complaint (verified by amedical certificate) is received from aneighbour.

The privet said to be causing theproblem must be within 50 metres of thecomplainant’s dwelling. Anyone maycomplain about privet causing healthproblems in public amenity areas suchas:

● parks and reserves;● playgrounds;● alleyways and walking tracks.Privet is banned from sale, propaga-

tion, distribution or commercial dis-play. It is also required to be destroyedin all transport corridors, such as alongrailway lines.

Te Awamutu 19-year-old HaydenMcCormick showed his class win-ning the men’s 15km scratch race atthe UCI Festival of Speed event inInvercargill — a lead-up event tothe Oceanias.

It is the first time New Zealandhas hosted a Tier One event whichbegins the qualifying process forthe 2016 Rio Olympics, attractingriders from six nations against astrong Kiwi contingent.

McCormick can take heart fromupstaging his second placed Kiwiteam-mate Shane Archbold andHong Kong’s third placed King LokCheung.

Archbold is a professional riderwho won Ras Tailteann, an annualeight-day international cyclingstage race in Ireland in May.

Rushlee Buchanan also featuredprominently in the Tier One event,placing third in the scratch raceand fourth in the omnium.

Her six omnium events includeda win in the 20km points race andsecond placing in the elimination.

The omnium was won by Elliswith Te Awamutu Sports’ JaimeNeilsen second.

Buchanan had little time toreflect on her outstanding perform-ances at Invercargill.

The 25-year-old flew back to theUnited States (immediately aftert h e O c e a n i a c h a m p i o n s h i p sconcluded on Friday) for a week-long training camp with her newprofessional team, United HealthCare.

She will return to New Zealandin time for the New Zealand roadchampionships in Christchurch inJanuary.

Rushlee Buchanan enjoyeda golden day winning back-to-back titles at the UCI OceaniaTrack Cycling Championshipsin Invercargill.

The Te Awamutu profes-sional cyclist was a member ofthe gold medal winning NewZealand women’s pursuit teamon the same day as she won thewomen’s scratch race.

In doing so, Buchananbanked invaluable points —the Oceanias are one of fivecontinental championshipsthat now carry qualifyingpoints for next year’s worldchampionships and alsoranking points for the 2016 RioOlympics.

It was all new for the NewZealand women’s team pur-suit, moving to 4000m and fourriders to match the men, in achange of UCI regulations thisyear.

In their first outing, thequartet of Lauren Ellis, TeAwamutu Sports’ JaimeNeilsen, Buchanan and new-comer Georgia Williams rodean outstanding 4:29.000 to beatoff the strong challenge fromAustralia who were only35/100ths of a second behind.

The Australian team wasled by Olympic omnium med-allist Annette Edmondson.

The Kiwis had clocked thefastest time in their heat.

New Zealand head coach,Dayle Cheatley says the winwas very pleasing.

‘‘It was the women’s firstride at 4kms with four ridersand to go 4:29 was right upthere internationally.

‘‘It was a totally new event

for all of us to get our headsaround. We have a benchmarkfor the women and exceededthat.’’

Buchanan is determined tocement a spot in the teamstarting line-up for impendingmajor events including the RioOlympics after being theunlucky fourth member of theNew Zealand pursuit team tomiss out on a ride at the 2012London Olympics where Ellis,Neilsen and Alison Shanks gotthe nod ahead of her.

Mid-Canterbury riderLauren Ellis clawed back anearly deficit to win the titlefrom fellow Olympian Neilsen

with Georgia Williamsfinishing third.

Neilsen had set the stand-ard as the top qualifier in theindividual pursuit qualifyingin the morning, but Ellispushed up the gearing andclawed her way back to finallygrab the win in the final lap.

She clocked 3:36.843 withNeilsen 0.2s behind, whileWilliams beat off Southland’sLaura Fairweather for thebronze.

Neilsen capped a memor-able championship placingsecond in the points race andomnium, decided over sixevents.

With a new coaching staff of Australian JulieFitzgerald and former Silver Fern MargaretForsyth on board, and a host of fresh input from aplaying perspective, the vastly experienced deBruin looms as being tailor-made for the situa-tion.

‘‘I reckon it’s really exciting, a change issometimes as good as a holiday,’’ she says.

‘‘I think there’s been a lot of hype around Pulseand Mystics and I suppose Steel as well abouttheir recruiting but I’m looking forward to thechallenge with Magic.

‘‘We’ve got a lot of talent in the groupand while we haven’t spent a hell’ve lot oftime together and may start a little bitslow, we’re only going to get better as thecombinations start working.’’

‘‘You’re never too old to learn a fewnew tricks and I’m hoping Julie might justadd something new to change things forme and make the players we play againstthink differently as well,’’ she says.

‘‘The situation at Magic is probably abit refreshing for somebody like me andCase (Kopua) who have been there for along time.

‘‘I’m really looking forward to thechallenge it will bring and seeing some ofthe young guns stepping it up as well.’’

After starting her ANZ Championshipcareer with Northern Mystics in 2008, deBruin spent a year with Magic beforeheading to the deep south and two seasonswith Southern Steel, returning to Magic in2012, and the place she now calls home.

Having just bought a house and withson Caleb starting school next year, thedecision to stay put was an easy one for deBruin.

‘‘I’m very happy where I am at themoment,’’ she says.

‘‘Caleb and I are quite settled in theWaikato. For me, this is home and I’mquite happy to stay here.

‘‘Netball plays an important part but atthe same time I’m not getting anyyounger. I want to stay in the region andhopefully build some connections for me

for afterwards — you’ve got to start thinkingabout those things as well.’’

An intriguing battle is developingbetween Te Awamutu and Kihikihi forhonours in this season’s Te AwamutuTennis Sub Association’s Double Cupinterclub competition.

Both teams are unbeaten after fourrounds, although neither line-up have theperfect record.

Te Awamutu head the table with sevenpoints, having had three wins and a draw,including a 4-0 victory over third placedHairini (three points) in their latest out-ing.

Kihikihi occupy second place with fivepoints, resulting from a win and threedrawn matches. Their win came in roundfour, beating fourth placed Otorohanga(one point) 3-1.

In Kakepuku Cup, Kihikihi have gottheir campaign off to the perfect start withfour straight wins for a maximum eightpoints.

Their last two matches have resulted inemphatic 11-3 wins over Hairini and TeAwamutu.

The scoreline, especially againstHairini was somewhat flattering as threeof the games went to tie-break sets.

Second placed Hairini (five points)rebounded with a 9-5 win over third placedRoto-O-Rangi (three points) in round four.

Roto-O-Rangi beat winless Te Awamutu9-5 in round three.

Te Awamutu Taekwon-Do Clubinstructor Ian Campbell came through agruelling test to upgrade to a sixth danblack belt.

The 49-year-old graded along with 12other New Zealand instructors seekingpromotion to the fourth, fifth and sixthdan ranks at a special senior dan testingin Auckland.

Grading was conducted before apanel of three international Taekwon-Do Masters, Evan Davidson, Paul

McPhail (both eighth dan) and MaheshBhana (seventh dan).

‘‘Ian put in a solid effort andperformed exceptionally well,’’ MasterDavidson told the Courier.

‘‘The many months of fitness train-i n g , s t u d y i n g h i s t h e o r y a n dperfecting his technical abilities cer-tainly paid off.’’

Campbell sat his theory examina-tion and presented his thesis in themorning, followed by his physical testin the afternoon where he had todisplay all aspects of the art, includ-ing self defence, pre-arranged step

and freestyle sparring, and specialflying and jumping techniques.

His examination culminated with apublic display in front of family andfriends.

The newly crowned sixth dan blackbelt saved his best for last, impressingall and sundry breaking a total of sixbricks — three with his left hand andthen three with his right hand.

Campbell also performed some pat-tern forms, some sparring andbreaking techniques including sidekicks and power breaks with bothhand and foot.

Hine Nolan came throughher first junior world cham-pionships with flying colours— winning silver and bronzein Benidorm, Spain.

The Te Awamutu 17-year-old collected silver in teamspeciality where she had tocomplete a flying side kickover a 1.1 metres long ribbon.

Her bronze came in thejunior female first dan patterncompetition where shereached the semi-finals stagein her speciality event, despitebeing ‘very nervous’ on debut

at this level.‘‘It’s all a little bit surreal,

I’m overwhelmed gaining amedal individually at my firstworld champs,’’ says Nolanwho rated the tournament agreat experience.

President of InternationalTaekwon-Do in New Zealand,Master Evan Davidson says itis a great achievement forNolan to win an individualbronze medal in her very firstworld championships.

‘‘I am very proud of Hine’ssuccess as will be all of her TeAwamutu College students.

‘‘She worked very hard

over the many months leadingup to the world champs. Aswell as local training, sheregularly attended the highperformance team trainings inAuckland.’’

Nolan represented hercountry in eight events (fourindividual, four team) pat-terns, sparring, powerbreaking and speciality tech-niques — the only junior tohave such a workload.

The New Zealand team wasthird placed country overallwith eight gold, seven silverand 11 bronze medals.

There were 1042 black belt

competitors, representing 58countries, including over 400juniors.

Over 90 umpires andreferees (officials) attended. Ofthe eight from New Zealand,two were from Te Awamutu,Evan Davidson (eighth danblack belt) and SimonMallinson (fourth dan blackbelt).

Nolan would like to thankher family and friends for alltheir support, but especiallyher Taekwon-Do coach/instructor Ian Campbell.

‘‘Without Ian, I would nothave known how to generatethe power needed for my tech-niques in individual patterns,’’says the double world champsmedallist.
