SYNTHESIS OF L-PROLINATE BASED
ALKYLMETHYLIMIDAZOLIUM IONIC LIQUIDS [Cnmim][Pro] (n =
4, 8, 12) AND ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY DATA ON THEIR
AGGREGATION IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS AT 298.15 K

During the last years amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) attract much
attention because of their high potential for applications in chemistry, biology,
medicine etc. This is a special class of ILs with their unique acid–base
behavior, biological significance and applications in different fields, such as
templates in synthetic chemistry, stabilizers for biological macromolecules etc.
[1-3]. Their biodegradability and nontoxicity can also play an important role in
pharmaceutics for drug formulations [4].
In the present work several AAILs having L-prolinate anions (Pro) and
alkylmethylimidazolium cations [Cnmim][Pro] with the different length of
hydrophobic tails (n = 4, 8, 12) were synthesized using the continuous gas
extraction method [5] for removing the solvent. The synthesis involves three
stages (Scheme 1). The first stage includes the ion exchange [Cnmim]Br
([Cnmim]Cl) → [Cnmim]OH using an anion exchange resin; in the second
stage the resulting alkylmethylimidazolium hydroxide is mixed at 0ºC with the
L-prolinate taken in excess; at the end of the stage 2 the mixture contains AAIL
with an excess of the amino acid; in the third stage the AAIL solution is
separated from the excess amino acid using acetonitrile ACN, and the resultant
product is dried under vacuum.
Scheme 1 - Synthesis route of [Cnmim][Pro] (R denotes C4H9, C8H17 or C12H25). The
initial substance 1 is [Cnmim]Br or [Cnmim]Cl. On stage 2 [Cnmim]OH is obtained, stage
3 results in the final product [Cnmim][Pro].
The results of 1H NMR and
13C NMR analysis of [C8mim][Pro] obtained
are in a good agreement with the literature data [6]. The total peak integral in
the 1H NMR spectrum was found to correspond for all AAILs obtained to a
nominal purity higher than 99%. The water content in the AAILs, determined
by the volumetric Karl Fisher titration (V20 METTLER TOLEDO), was lower
than 0.1 wt%.

were performed at various AAIL concentrations from high dilutions up to 2-4
wt.%. The concentration dependences of the specific conductivities of aqueous
[Cnmim][Pro] solutions (n = 4, 8, 12) indicate that in the solutions the
aggregation takes place. This tendency is the most pronounced for AAILs with
molecules having longer alkyl chains (in our case at n = 8, 12), and there are
grounds to conclude that above some concentration (CMC) in the solutions of
these AAILs micellization takes place. The results of the electrical conductivity
study clearly show that the general features of micellar aggregation of
relatively long-chain imidazolium ILs are analogous to those in the case of
traditional surfactants. Further studies of the aggregation behavior of AAILs
and the studies of the structure of aggregates will be of interest.

EXPERIMENTAL THERMODYNAMICS OF THE Li-Sb SYSTEM
STUDIED BY KNUDSEN EFFUSION MASS SPECTROMETRY

Thermodynamics and Kinetics, Russia

Thermodynamic properties of the Li-Sb system are of interest due to
development of Lithium-ion batteries, for which the replacement of graphite
anode by intermetallic materials is an important issue to increase the battery
capacity. In Fig. 1 the Li-Sb phase diagram is shown. Two samples Li0.5Sb0.5
and Li0.7Sb0.3 were prepared from pure metals Li (Sigma-Aldrich, 99.8 mass %)
and Sb (GoodFellow, 99.9999 mass %) under argon atmosphere by melting
and annealing them in closed yttria containers wrapped in aluminium foil and
encapsulated in quartz glass ampoules under vacuum. The prepared alloys were
characterized by x-ray diffraction. Vaporization experiments were carried out
in an automated single-focusing magnetic mass spectrometer CH5 (Varian
MAT, Bremen) [1,2]. Samples were loaded in yttria Knudsen cell heated by a
radiation from the tungsten resistance furnace. The temperature of the cell was
monitored using a chromel-alumel thermocouple placed under a bottom of the
cell and calibrated by the melting point of silver (purity of 99.99 mass %). The
accuracy of the temperature measurement is within ±2 K. The gaseous species
effusing from the cell were ionized by the electrons with energy of 20 eV and
an emission current of 0.1 mA. The formed ions were focused by an ion-optical
system and accelerated by a negative potential of 4000 V to a 90º magnetic
sector field for mass separation. Ion intensities were measured by a TF830 1.3
GHz universal frequency counter. In mass spectra of saturated vapor over both
pure Sb and Li-Sb alloys in the temperature range 673-933 K the Sb+ (14), Sb2
+
(32), Sb3+ (13), and Sb4
+ (100) ions were registered; the relative ion currents
are given in parenthesis for pure Sb at T = 788 K. Neither Li+ nor any
intermetallic ions were detected in the mass spectra of Li-Sb. The ion current
of Sb4+ was used to measure the Sb activity in the Li-Sb alloys since it is
formed by ionization of the Sn4 species exclusively. The intensities of Sb4+
were measured as a function of temperature in both heating and cooling mode.
Two runs, each with a fresh sample, were carried out for each alloy
composition. Vaporization of pure Sb before and after the alloy measurement
yielded a continuous check of sensitivity of mass spectrometer. The obtained
thermodynamic data (activity, partial enthalpy and enthropy of mixing) are
presented in Fig. 2 and Table. References: [1] K. Hilpert, R. Ruthardt, Ber. Bunsenges. Phys. Chem. 91 (1987) 724-731. [2] D. Henriques et al., J. Alloy. Comp. 585 (2014) 299-306. [3] M.M. Kane et al., J. Electrochem. Soc. 162 (3) (2015) A421-A425.

THE GAS-PHASE CONFORMATIONAL EQUILIBRIA
THERMODYNAMICS AND MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF N-
METHOXYPIPERIDINE

The conformational properties of saturated six-membered cyclic
compounds have been one of the most active fields of research in
stereochemistry. In our recent paper [1], we concluded that the hyperconjugation
between the electron lone pair on nitrogen atom and the π-system of substituents
stabilizes the axial form – the typical representatives of such molecular systems
were N-alkenyls.
In this work, we studied the conformation behavior and molecular structure
of N-methoxypiperidine (MeOP) by quantum chemical (QC) calculations.
Geometry optimization and vibrational calculations were performed at the
B3LYP, M06-2X and MP2 levels with the 6-311G** and cc-pVTZ basic sets
with the use of the Gaussian 09 program. To our knowledge, no data on these
compound conformational properties are available in the literature. Relative total
electron energies and free Gibbs energies along with predicted conformer
contributions are summarized in Table 1. The potential energy surface (PES)
profiles were obtained by varying the Cα–N–O–C dihedral angle with a step of
10º using B3LYP and MP2 methods with the 6-311G** basis set while all other
geometrical parameters optimized. For ease of visualization, these PES profiles
are plotted as the energy vs. ϕ=Lp–N–O–C dihedral angle, where Lp is a lone
pair of the nitrogen atom (see Fig. 1). The structures with torsion angle ϕ=0° are
so-called trans conformers (tr–E and tr–A) and ϕ=180° – the cis conformers (c–
E and c–A). The molecular structures of all possible conformers are of the Cs
symmetry equilibrium structure (Fig. 2).

All approximations in this case coincide in predicting the values of total
electron energies of the conformers are 0, 0.9–2.0, 4.6–6.3 and 11.2–13.3
kcal/mol for tr–E, tr–A, c–E and c–A, respectively, regardless of the basis set
applied. Quite the same are the free Gibbs energy differences: 0, 1.1–2.0, 5.6–
6.5 and 11.0–12.6 kcal/mol for tr–E, tr–A, c–E and c–A, respectively. For
transition between the trans and cis conformers, the energy barrier was found to
be ∆E#=11 to 12 and 13 to 15 kcal/mol in the equatorial and axial forms,
respectively, above the trans conformers. Since the cis conformers are unlikely
to be in gas phase of MeOP at room temperature as follows from the QC
calculations, we hereinafter consider only two conformers, both trans
conformers, i.e. tr–E and tr–A. According to the B3LYP calculations, the
concentration of tr–A is 3–6%, whereas the MP2/6-311G** and M06-2X/cc-
pVTZ methods predict this value ca. 9%; however, the M06-2X/6-311G**
combination resulted in up to 14% of tr–A.
As follows from the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis calculated at the
B3LYP, M06-2X and MP2 levels with 6-311G** basis set, the orbital
interaction between the Lps on the nitrogen and oxygen atoms stabilizes trans
conformers. Due to this, in case of MeOP the gauche forms are missed, unlike
the case of methoxycyclohexane [2].

Piperidine and its derivatives are ubiquitous building blocks in the
synthesis of organic compounds, including pharmaceuticals. The conformational
preference of a N-substituted pipridines depends on the 1,3-diaxial repulsion and
hyperconjugation between the electron lone pair on nitrogen atom and the π-
system of a substituent [1,2]. Recently we studied conformational behavior and
molecular structure of N-Phenylpiperidine PhP, in which the ratio of equatorial
and axial conformers is 90(10):10(10)% from electron diffraction [3].
In this paper we study the molecular structure and conformational
properties of N-(4-carbonitrilephenyl)-piperidine CNPhP, N-(4-nitrophenyl)-
piperidine NO2PhP and N-Pyridinepiperidine PyrP by quantum chemical (QC)
calculations using the Gaussian 09 program. Geometry and vibrational
calculations were performed at B3LYP, M06-2X and MP2 levels with 6-
311G** (A) and cc-pVTZ (B) basis sets. Model structures of these compounds
are drawn in, see Scheme. Relative total electron energies and free Gibbs
energies along with predicted conformer contributions are summarized in Table.

Scheme. The molecular structures of NO2PhP, CNPhP and PyrP.
According to the QC calculations, each of the three compounds may exist
in two conformeric, equatorial and axial, forms. In case of CNPhP, the B3LYP
and M06-2X calculations predict that the equatorial form is by ∆G°(298K)=0.2–
0.7 kcal/mol more stable than axial. The MP2 method, on the contrary, predicts
the axial conformer to be more preferable, ∆G° = –0.5 kcal/mol, though the ∆E
value is +0.4 kcal/mol, that may be due a very low, ca. 7 cm–1
, phenyl ring twist
vibration frequency as predicted by these particular calculations.
For NO2PhP, the ∆E and ∆G values are 0.7 and 0.3 kcal/mol, respectively,
by B3LYP/6-311G** method. More sophisticated basis set in combination with
the B3LYP functional, B3LYP/cc-pVTZ, converged at the equatorial form,
being though started from the axial one. The M06-2X calculations predict the

∆G and ∆E values, 0.0 to 0.2 kcal/mol, witness for comparable contributions of
the conformers and somewhat more stable equatorial form is predicted by MP2
calculations, ∆E from 0.1 to 0.3 kcal/mol.
In the case of PyrP, as follows from the B3LYP and M06-2X calculations
with 6-311G** basis set, the axial conformer to dominate in gas phase, ∆G 0.3

concentration of both conformers, whereas the MP2 calculations predict

The Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis was performed at the B3LYP
and MP2 levels with 6-311G** basis set using the Gaussian 09 built-in NBO
version 3.1 package to calculate the orbital interactions. According to the
B3LYP/6-311G** calculations, in the Ax form, the orbital interaction energy
between the lone pair (Lp) on the nitrogen atom and the substituent
Lp(N)→BD*(C6,Cortho), is 9 (CNPhP) and 8 (NO2PhP and PyrP) kcal/mol
higher than in the Eq form, stabilizing the axial conformer. At the same time, the
MP2/6-311G** calculations show that these values are 15 and 13 kcal/mol for
CNPhP and PyrP, respectively. In the case of NO2PhP, the orbital interaction
energy between Lp on nitrogen atom and Lp* on C6 atom of substituent in the
Ax from is 78 kcal/mol. Due to probably these results, the MP2 method predicts
a higher contribution of the Ax form as compared with the B3LYP method, see
Table.

THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF DISSIMILAR ASSOCIATES OF
ALIZARINES
Shapovalov S. A.
V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Ukraine
ya.serghey@yandex.ua
Under certain conditions, associates of dyes can act as analytical reagents,
color markers, and bioprobes [1]. The ability of alizarin and its derivatives, first
of all, alizarin red S (AR) (sodium salt of 9,10-dihydro-3,4-dihydroxy-9,10-
dioxo-2-anthracenesulfonic acid) as the most water-soluble reagent, to associate
has been established. Alizarines are known as the acid-base or metallochromic
indicator and a reagent for photometric and extraction-photometric
determinations of inorganic ions. In this connection the interaction of singly-
(H2Аn-) and doubly-charged (НAn
2-) AR anions with the singly-charged cation
(Ct+) of pinacyanol (PNC) is discussed in more detail, and the properties and
probable structure of the associates is considered.
The probable structure of the associate (Ct+)2∙HAn
2- calculated by the AM1
semiempirical method (calculation conditions: the Polak-Ribiere convergence
algorithm; the convergence gradient of two successive iterations not higher than
2 kJ∙mol-1
) is presented on Fig. 1.

is 4.5 Å (upper atom) and 4.9 Å (bottom atom). The central angle at the vertex at the marked
atom of AR is 91°. The length of PNC in the direction of the polymethine chain is 18.8 Å, and
the length of НAn2-
along the chromophore plane is 7.5 Å.

+ and H2Аn
-; the algebraic sum of
ΔHof of the ions composing the associate (1), and ΔH
of of the associate Ct
+·H2Аn
- (2).
To obtain the optimized structure of the associate, it is important to find
the global energy minimum. We tested 6 – 7 different starting mutual positions
of counterions in the associate (each counterion was also preliminarily
geometrically optimized). The lowest minimum was chosen from the calculated
mailto:ya.serghey@yandex.ua
~ 23 ~
set of energy (so-called local) minima; and the energy of this structure was
accepted as corresponding to the global energy minimum. Then the additional
geometric optimization of the associate structure was performed, during which a
series of decreasing values of the convergence gradient of successive iterations
was specified (as a rule from 0.1 to 5∙10-3
…1∙10-4
kJ∙mol-1
·Å-1
).
As shown by the calculations, the optimization of geometry of the
structure depends substantially on the values of the RMS gradient but is almost
completed already at 0.01 kJ∙mol-1
∙Å-1
and is accompanied by the shortening of
the distance between the counterions. The associate (Ct+)2∙HAn
2- has a sandwich
structure. This mutual arrangement of ions results in the enhancement of
dispersion and π-electronic interactions as driving forces of dissimilar
association of dyes. Their manifestation is indicated by a noticeable deformation
of the initially planar π-electronic system of the cation (see Fig. 1). The
appreciable cation-anionic interaction is indicated by the results of calculations
of the enthalpies of formation (ΔHo
f, the standard conditions) of the associates.
To estimate the values of ΔHo
f we used the AM1 and the PM3 semiempirical
methods.
On Fig. 2 (PM3 semiempirical method) the ions Ct+ and H2Аn
- are
characterized by the values of ΔHo
f ranging from 980 to 968 and from -1085 to
-1094 kJ∙mol-1
, respectively. The algebraic sum of the values of ΔHo
f for the
cation and anion ranges from -126 to -105 kJ∙mol-1
(energy level 1) and exceeds
ΔHo
f of the associate Ct+·H2Аn
-, which ranges from -356 to -398 kJ∙mol
-1
(energy level 2), by 293…230 kJ∙mol-1
. Similarly, the ions Ct+ and HАn
2- are
characterized by the values of ΔHo
f ranging from 1076 to 1073 and from -976 to
-985 kJ∙mol-1
, respectively (AM1 semiempirical method). The algebraic sum of
ΔHo
f of two cations and the anion is 1161…1176 kJ∙mol-1
(energy level 1).
Since the value of ΔHo
f of the associate Ct+·H2Аn
- was found to be
448…432 kJ∙mol-1
(level 2), the excess of the algebraic sum of the values of
ΔHo
f of the counterions over ΔHo
f of the associate is 744…713 kJ∙mol-1
.
An analysis of the obtained data suggests that the formation of associates of
anions of alizarin red S is energetically favorable. This agrees with rather high
values of the association constants determined experimentally. The energy gain
characterized by the value of Σ – ΔHof substantially exceeds the average
inaccuracy of calculation methods for the calculation of ΔHo
f and the variation
range of the obtained values of ΔHo
f. The listed facts indicate that the formation
of associates in solutions is characteristic of dyes with the flattened shape of the
molecule and the presence of π-conjugated electronic systems enhancing the
contribution of dispersion interactions.

method is to fluidization. It is particularly important for those countries
which do not have oil reserves, but have the coal mine. Such countries as
Armenia, where, in particular in the northern parts there are deposits of
lignite / brown coal /. Such clusters have are also in Karabakh. Considering
the difficulty of burning brown coal is actualized it liquefaction in flammable
hydrocarbons.
Commonly known data for obtaining inexpensive liquid fuel from coal
and its analogues by hydropyrolysis are shown in Table 1. Table 1

The quality oil marketable products can be control by fractional composition
characteristics. The distillation curves of obtained products received either by
distillation with very efficient distillation column or by Engler method. This
method was standardized in ASTM.
The proposed technology makes it possible to solve major environmental
problems associated with the use of substandard coal, coal residue plurality of
heaters, recycling asphalt-bitumen residues, complex issues of processing and
reprocessing. For the pyrolysis of lignite has been proposed next flow-sheet
technology, there are obtained 0.30-0.40 l/kg liquid condensate from 1kg of
lignite at 400-450oC.

In order to provide high heat capacity of charcoal, agricultural wastes,
lignite of low quality, and also to allow of environmental issues, in the present
communication are reported the use of heavy hydrocarbon bottoms waste
components (automobile tires, various applications of polymers, etc. )
Needed attention is also paid to the issue of completeness of combustion,
which is an important indicator of the fuel efficiency.
Previously we have been reported about liquation of the brown coal
produced in Republic of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which can
be used as fuel for electricity production by thermal power plant [1].
This charcoal and lignite have a carbon around 20-25% and high level for
ash around 20%. The use of this as fuel can make more ecological problem.
The energy content of a fossil fuel, before any treatment or conversion, corresponds to primary energy. It`s known that a fuel is characterized, giving the
common feature inherent to its heat energy generation, by the calorific value [1].
Calorific value* (GCV and NCV) is the quantity of heat released by the
complete combustion of a unit quantity of a fuel in a well-determined condition.
Here are set out the practical purpose of increasing the combustion heat and
heat capacity of charcoal and lignite accumulated in various places of our
countries, along with oil reserves, heavy fractions lying on the warehouses of
many petroleum products, as well as heavy waste of recently introduced
technologies for the production of liquid fuel from tires.
It will also create the possibility of disposal of the above mentioned waste
as an important environmental problem - the recycling of residues.
The quality of this marketable mixture products are controlled also by
combustion heat and heat capacity characteristics.
At the present time we are faced with the task of granulating the resulting
mixture, which makes it convenient to use the farms.

STRUCTURE – ENERGY RELATIONS IN THERMOCHEMICAL
PROPERTIES

The successful development of organic synthesis has become possible due
to foundation of the classical theory of molecular structure. This theory, being a
fruitful one, has originated due to necessity to explain such phenomenon in
nature as strain, which manifests itself in multiple forms in organic chemistry.
Whereas there are some 10 million compounds containing carbon that have
either been synthesised or otherwise structurally characterised, enthalpy of
formation data for them remains tailed in the few thousands! The compilation of
approximately 3000 enthalpies of formation of organic compounds presented in
the book (Pedley, J. P.; Naylor, R. D.; Kirby, S. P. Thermochemical Data of
Organic Compounds, 3nd Ed. TRC, Texas, 1994). This book is the most recent
and comprehensive source of the thermochemical data available for the last 120
years (the first combustion calorimeter was elaborated by Berthelot in 1881).
Hence, one of the aims of our work has been to extend a framework of
experimental data from which one may study the relation between energy
content and molecular structure and calculate values of thermochemical
properties of many hundreds compounds without need of further experimental
measurements. In this context, about 400 organic compounds have been
investigated in our laboratory during the last two decades and their
thermochemical properties have been derived experimentally (combustion
calorimetry, equilibrium studies, vapour pressures measurements, DSC).
Systematic investigations have been performed on homologous series of
alkanes, alkenes, ethers, esters, amines, nitriles, alcohols,
