The Gulf of Patras

• The Gulf of Patras is a branch of the Ionian Sea. On the east, it is closed by the Strait of Rion. On the west, it is bounded by the Cape Araxos.

• Depth 135 meters• The Port of Patras lies to

the southeast and is the only major port on the gulf.

The sea water

• Two major rivers from the land across Patras and two others, smaller, are the most important sources of freshwater to the the Gulf.

• The ecological value of Patras Gulf is high due to the presence of two lagoons, which are wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention

The Fishing

• The overfishing and the change of the bottom of the sea (human constructions, estuaries) have reduced the biodiversity of the sea life.

The Pollution

• the Gulf faces significant pollution problems because of the urban and industrial wastewater received from coastal villages, due to

• malfunction or non-functioning sewage treatment systems,

• phosphate and other fertilizers from the agricultural activities

• and because of the shipping.

The sea life

• There are all the kind of fish that live in the Greek seas, also seaweed, urchins corals,clams,shrimps,octopuses, kalamari,medusas, turtles, dolphins, seals.
