500 YEARSOF HISTORYFROM THE 16th-CENTURYREFORMATION TO MODERN TIMES.

Geneva's Hidden Gems

The year 2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. As one of the most significant sites of this revolutionary religious movement, Geneva’s every corner has a story to tell. At the International Museum of the Reformation B , paintings, books and manuscripts retrace the history of Protestantism. The Reformation Wall 4 in the Bastions Park pays tribute to the movement's four most iconic figures: Jean Calvin, Guillaume Farel, Théodore de Bèze and John Knox. Head to the other key sites too and explore the narrow streets of the Old Town, St. Peter's Cathedral and the Calvin Auditory 2 . All these locations can be reached on foot and under your own steam, but for a more interactive and informative experience, book one of our guided tours at the Tourist Information Centre i .

A cruise on the biggest lake in Western Europe is a guaranteed change of scenery. Take a seat on Lake Geneva's magnificent retro-style steamboat E and take in the spectacular views. Want to sail all day? Choose the cruise that lets you discover the city itself, its monuments, the famous Jet d'Eau 1* and the Palais Wilson 37 (named in honor of American president Woodrow Wilson), as well as picturesque Swiss villages and hillside vineyards, some of which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stunning views of the gently sloping Jura mountains and snow-capped Alps will accompany you throughout your trip, culminating in a breathtaking view of the majestic Mont Blanc F . Or why not choose the one hour cruise to visit the Little Mermaid of Lake Geneva? You can even enjoy a lake cruise while dining with family or friends—talk about dinner with a view!

Dine like a president at Armures G , one of Bill and Hillary Clinton's favourite fondue restaurants. Located in the heart of the Old Town, this totally unique restaurant is one of the oldest in Geneva. Enjoy an authentic cheese fondue and traditional Swiss and French cuisine in warm and friendly surroundings. There are plenty of other culinary options too, with the city boasting nearly 50 fine dining restaurants, of which 10 are graced by Michelin stars. Let's not forget the wine and cocktail bars on every corner, offering plenty of opportunities for a welcome break.

If Switzerland is synonymous with watches, then Geneva is definitely the watch capital. The art of luxury watchmaking was created here four centuries ago and the city streets, lined with the most celebrated brands, attest to this reputation. Even the famous Jet d'Eau 1* was originally constructed to help power the watchmaking workshops! To learn more about this incredible legacy, nothing beats the Geneva Watch Tour i . Take this walking tour from the Flower Clock 3* to the Patek Philippe Museum C , via the Foundation of High Horology 9 , and the Île Tower 21. Make your way through streets featuring countless luxury boutiques as you learn about the rich history and myriad facets of a watchmaking legacy that continues to blend tradition with modern technology. Another Swiss legend, of course, is the Swiss Army knife G ! How about engraving and personalising your own knife in a specialty boutique in the city centre?

Did you know that Geneva is the birthplace of Frankenstein 52 ? Mary Shelley spent a summer here writing her most famous novel. But don't worry, you won't run into any scary monsters during your stay! If thrills are your thing, take the short cable car ride to the top of Mont-Salève and take in the sweeping view of the lake, the Jet d'Eau 1* , the city and surrounding mountains. Fancy a little taste of England? Head to the English Garden and enjoy a cup of tea or glass of wine. Opened in 1854, this green oasis of British charm offers a spectacular view of the Jet d'Eau and is the perfect place to take a relaxing stroll. The famous Flower Clock 3* is located within the park grounds. The clock's colors change with the seasons and at 2.5 meters long, its second hand is the biggest in the world! Even Frankenstein would be impressed with that record!

Have you ever seen so much culture concentrated in one place? Geneva has more than 40 museums within a very small area. See the incredible Humanitarian Adventure exhibition at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum A , dedicated to the work of Henry Dunant who founded the Movement in 1863. At the International Museum of the Reformation, B you'll find paintings, books and manuscripts that will transport you to the very heart of the "Protestant Rome". The Patek Philippe Museum C explores the history of luxury watchmaking from the 16th century to the present day. Dedicated to the legacy of the written word, the Bodmer Foundation Library and Museum D features unique displays of papyri, medieval manuscripts, incunabula and first editions. Want to see more? Visit our website to find out more about Geneva's extraordinary museums!

Geneva isn't just the capital of diplomacy and high-end watchmaking, it's also a foodie's dream. Over a space that's barely bigger than a district of London, there are more than 50 fine dining restaurants, 10 of which are Michelin-starred. For something a little different, head to the Pâquis Baths 41. Whether it's the height of summer or mid-winter, order a delicious cheese fondue to share with family or friends. And don't forget about Geneva's many wine and cocktail bars, where a selection of local and international wines are waiting for you, along with crazy cocktails especially created by Mixologists. Make sure you also sample the wine from our very own wine-growing region too, a true local specialty!

Home to a large number of international organizations, Geneva is a key centre for peace and diplomacy. The famous "spirit of Geneva" is still very much alive through-out the city, but the Broken Chair 6 in the Place des Nations is without doubt the location where the city's humanist spirit is most tangible. Made entirely of wood and standing 12 metres high, this imposing sculpture was created in 1997 by Daniel Berset as a tribute to the victims of anti-personnel mines. It sits just a stone's throw from the Palais des Nations 5* , the European head-quarters of the United Nations, which is definitely worth a guided tour. The Palais has thousands of secrets just waiting to be revealed, and be sure not to miss the extraordinary ceiling in the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room. But if you're more interested in the field work than the negotiation side of things, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum E is the one for you. A moving experience is guaranteed.
