Geothermal Energy

● India has approx. 10,000 MW of Geothermal power potential and target to harness geothermal

energy by 2030. First phase deployment of 1000 MW geothermal energy capacity by 2020 and

10000 MW by 2030.

● More than 300 geothermal locations identified.

● Prominent geothermal resources in India – Tatapani (Chhattisgarh); Puga Valley (Jammu &

Kashmir); Manikaran (Himachal Pradesh); Tuwa (Gujarat); Unai and Jalgaon (Maharashtra).

● Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is in the process of finalizing Indian Geothermal Energy

Development Framework.

● Tatapani in Chhattisgarh is projected as a pilot project and Government of India is in the process of

finalizing the work on Tatapani Project.

● Pursuant to Paris Climate Change Summit in 2015, the Government of India announced its target of

achieving 175GW of Renewable Energy by 2020.
