(1946)U.S. occupied Southern Iran during the war

Soviets occupied Northern Iran Post war- U.S. pulled out, Stalin remained

in hopes to gain control of oil supply U.S. sent in USS Missouri along with a

strong message to get out of the middle East

Truman went before Congress to ask for $400 million to fight Communist aggression in Greece and Turkey

The goal Aid anyone who was fighting against

communist rule

Truman Doctrine

Gave aid to nations to rebuild their economies

Helped to prevent poor countries from falling to communism

Truman felt his doctrine and Marshall Plan were essential to stopping the spread of communism

Marshall Plan

By 1948 Germany would be officially split as a nation

West Germany had free elections with democratic government

East Germany would be completely communist

Stalin cut off West Germany and created a blockade

No food, no shipping in, no electricity, etc.

Berlin Airlift

U.S. and GB flew planes over Berlin for over a year and a half (‘48-’49) bring supplies

2 million tons of supplies

Showed the Allied hard stance against Communist rule

May of ‘49- Stalin finally lifts the blockade
