AWQ 3MI – Creating a Dramatic Landscape in Photoshop
Before you start creating your own personal landscape, let’s organize some of the practice work that you’ve done over the past few weeks.
Start by creating a project folder titled: Photoshop Landscape
Inside this folder you will place: Your best two dramatic sunset photos (titled “Dramatic Sunset-01.jpg” and “Dramatic
Sunset-02.jpg”) The practice landscape we just created in Photoshop (titled “Practice Landscape.jpg”) The screenshot you took of your practice landscape, showing the various layers (titled
“Practice Screenshot.png”)
Photoshop Landscape Assignment
Now that you have learned a number of methods for combining and manipulating images in Photoshop, you are going to create a Photoshop Landscape using photographs found online.
Requirements: An interesting sky (sunset, sunrise, storm clouds, etc.) A landscape that combines the foreground from one photograph and the midground
from another An obvious centre of interest in your landscape (this can be part of the foreground
photo you select, or it can be something you add from another image) Something interesting added to the sky, other than birds (if you want to use birds, then
add something else as well) Different techniques used to make the lighting more dramatic (gradient layers, dodging
and burning, painting in lighter areas, etc.) A well-placed text element (can be a single word, or a short quotation) A screenshot showing all the layers in Photoshop (titled: “Photoshop Landscape
Screenshot.png” Your finished landscape photo should be saved as a JPEG, with all layers merged
together (titled: “Photoshop Landscape.jpg”) A subfolder (titled: “Images”) that contains all the photos you used to create your
landscape
Hints & Tips: When searching for images, set the Search Tools in Google to “Large” images As you work in Photoshop, give all of your layers a title according to the content Remember that it’s easier to cut out images if they have clear, well defined edges Refer to the “Intense Landscape Tutorial” document for detailed instructions on the
various techniques we practiced in class
