Receipt controlIn order to ensure a perfect and safe use of thedevice, a proper transport, expert storage, erec-tion and mounting and careful usage and main-tenance is required. In case that a safe opera-tion can no longer be granted, the device hasto be put out of service and has to be protectedagainst unintentional putting into service.A safe operation can no longer be assumed, ifthe device shows visible damage, does not work in spite of intact net supply, has been exposed to disadvantageous condi-tions for a longer time (e.g. storage beyond al-lowed climate without adaption to the room cli-mate, dew etc.) or transport use (e.g. fallingfrom great height, even without visible dam-age).
Please test the contents of delivery for comple-tion, before starting the installation of the de-vice.

Hints for maintenanceBefore delivery the device is tested in varioussafety checks and marked with a seal. If thedevice is opened, these checks must be re-peated.For instruments, which are opened outside themanufacturing works, no warranty is grantedwhatsoever.
Repairing and calibrationRepairing and calibration work can be carriedout in the manufacturing works only.Front foilThe cleaning of the front foil has to be effectedwith a soft cloth using a common cleansingagent. Acid or acidic agents are not allowed forcleaning.
Waste managementThe UMG96L can be disposed and recycled aselectronical waste according to the legal regu-lations.

Functional descriptionThe electronical three phase measurementsystem determines and digitalizes the effectivevalues of voltages and currents in 50/60 Hz net-works.The operating voltage for operation of UMG96Lis generated by the measuring voltage L1-N. Arandom test measurement is carried out eachsecond at all current and voltage inputs. Meas-uring signal interruptions, which last longer thanone second are safely recognized.For each random test one period is scanned.From those sampled values the microproces-sor calculates the electric quantities. Thesemeasured values are indicated within the pro-grammable display. The energy as well as theminimum and maximum values are storedevery 15 minutes whereas the programmeddata are stored immedately is a none volatilememory (EEPROM).The scanning frequency for all measuring in-puts is calculated from the net frequency ofphase 1. At a net frequency of 50Hz the scan-ning frequency is 2,5kHz and for 60Hz it is3,0kHz.

Product descriptionIntended useThe UMG96L is suitable for fix mounting andthe measurement of voltage, current, poweretc. in low voltage switchgear. The measure-ment is designed for 3 phase systems with neu-tral conductor (TN and TT-mains).The UMG96L is suitable for mounting in fix andweather protected panels. Conducting panelsmust be earthed.Due to the high resistance against interference,the UMG 96L is suitable for continous and un-supervised operation.
As the UMG96L receives its power from phaseL1 of the measuring voltage, at least phase L1and the neutral conductor N must be con-nected.The attached voltage must be within the rangeof the measuring and operation voltage shownon type plate.Either ../5A or ../1A current transformers can beconnected to the current measuring inputs.The connection of the measuring and operat-ing voltage is carried out on the back side ofthe UMG96L via all-insulated spring powerclamps.
The measuring and operating voltages must beconnected to the UMG 96L via a separation(switch or power switch) and an overcurrentprotection fuse (2-10A) in the building installa-tion. The separation (switch or power switch)must be near the UMG 96L and easily accessi-ble.

InstallationMounting placeThe UMG96L is suitable for a fix insertion intolow and medium voltage switchgear. Anymounting position is possible.Measuring and operating voltageThe operating voltage of the UMG96L is gener-ated by the measuring voltage. The measure-ment is designed for three phase systems withneutral conductor (TN and TT mains). Themeasuring and operating voltages must be con-nected to the UMG 96L via a separation (switchor power switch) and an overcurrent protection(2-10A) within the building installation.The con-nection of the measuring and operatingvoltages is carried out at the back side of theUMG 96L via shock protected spring clamps.
230V/400V Standard versionPhase L1 and the neutral conductor N must beconnected, and the attached voltage must bewithin the range of the measuring and operat-ing voltage.
120V/220V Special versionPhase L1 and the neutral conductor N must beconnected, and the attached voltage must bewithin the range of the measuring and operat-ing voltage.
60V/110V Special versionPhase L1 and the neutral conductor N must beconnected, and the attached voltage must bewithin the range of the measuring and operat-ing voltage.
Attention!Before the device is connected to volta-ge for the first time, it should be depos-ited the installation room for at least 2hours, to create a temperature assimila-tion and avoid condensation and dew.
Attention!The limits indicated in the technical datamay not be exceeded, not even whilechecking and putting into service of theUMG 96L.
- The connection wires for the operating volta-ge leading to the UMG96L must be suitable forvoltages up to 300V against ground.
- The measuring and operating voltage has tobe protected by a fuse, which must be in therange of 2A to 10A.
- A switch or power switch for the operating vol-tage must be provided within the building instal-lation.
- The switch has to be near the instrument andeasily accessible.
- The switch must be marked as separation forthis instrument.

Sum current measurementIf the current measurement is carried out viatwo current transformers, the total transformerratio must be set to the UMG96L.
Example: Sum current transformerA current measurement is carried out via onecurrent transformer with a ratio of 1000/5A andanother one with a ratio of 200/5A. The summeasurement is carried out with a sum trans-former 5+5/5A.The UMG96L has to be programmed as fol-lows:
Primary current: 1000A + 200A = 1200ASecondary current: 5A
Current measurementThe current measurement is carried out via ../5A or ../1A current transformers. In case thatthe current has to be measured by an Ampere-meter in addition to the UMG96L, the Ampere-meter has to be connected in series to theUMG96L.In mains with voltage up to 300VAC againstground, currents up to 5A can be connectedand measured directly to the UMG 96L.
Attention!Current transformers may not be han-dled in open condition of the secondary,as the secondary clamps can lead livevoltage.
Attention!Prior to connecting or exchanging theUMG 96L, the secondary clamps of theexternal current transformers have to beshort circuited.

Attention!The program allows current and voltagetransformer ratio setting only, if the maxi-mum phase power can reach up to50.0MW and the sum power can reach amaximum value of 150.0MW.

BK BlInaccuracyThe inaccuracy of the current measuring inputis +- 1% of the measuring range (5A). There-fore, the inaccuracy of the current measure-ment is +-50mA.Example: InaccuracyWith a current transformer 200/5A, the meas-uring range is 200A. The inaccuracy is +-1% of200A = +-2A.
ResolutionThe maximum resolution of the current meas-uring inputs is 10mA. The indication changesin 0.01A steps.Example: Resolution current transformer 200/5AWith a current transformer ratio of 200/5A, aresolution of 10mA*40 = 400mA is effected.The display changes in 0.4A steps.
Small currentsThe minimum working current is 20mA. At shortcircuited or open current measurement input,the UMG 96L can indicate a small current. Thiscurrent is within the range of the allowed meas-urement inaccuracy.

Putting into serviceThe putting into service of the UMG 96L shouldbe carried out as follows:
InstallationThe UMG96L is designed for mounting in lowvoltage distributions, which contain overvoltagein measurement category III. The UMG96L issuitable for installation in fixed and weatherproof panels. Conducting panels must beearthed. Any mounting position is possible. Formounting on front panels or doors, the deliv-ered fixing brackets have to be used.
Program current and voltage transformersWhen the device leaves the manufacturer, acurrent transformer of 5/5A is set.The set voltage transformer ratio has to bechanged only, if a voltage transformer is con-nected.When connecting voltage transformers, pleaseobserve the allowed measuring and operatingvoltage stated on type plate!
Attach measuring and operating voltageThe allowed measuring and operating voltageof UMG 96L is indicated on the type plate.

The connection wires for measuring voltageleading to the UMG96L must be suitable forvoltages up to 300V against ground and 520Vphase to phase.After connecting the stated measuring and op-erating voltage to the UMG 96L, all segmentsof the display appear. After approx. two sec-onds, the UMG 96L switches to the first meas-ured value indication.In case that no indication appears, pleasecheck, if the attached operating voltage iswithin the rated voltage range.
Attention!Mesuring and operating voltage, whichdo not correspond to the indication onthe type plate, can lead to malfunctionand damage of the instrument.

Check measurementProvided that all voltage and current inputs areconnected correctly, the phase and sum poweris calculated and displayed correctly.
Check phase powerIn case that a current transformer is assignedto the wrong outer conductor, the correspond-ing power is measured and indicated incor-rectly.The assignment of the outer conductor and cur-rent transformer is correct, if no voltage ismeasured between the outer conductor and theprimary of the corresponding current trans-former.To ensure that the outer conductor at the volta-ge input is assigned to the right current trans-former, please short circuit the secondary of thecorresponding current transformer. The appar-ent power of this phase at UMG 96L must beindicated by zero.
If the apparent power is indicated correctly, butthe real power has a - sign, the current trans-former clamps are interchanged, or power issupplied to the energy supplier.
Check sum powerProvided that all voltage, current and power inthe corresponding phase is indicated correctly,the sum power must be displayed correctly byUMG 96L either.For verification, the sum power measured byUMG96L should be compared to the energystated by the real and reactive energy countersof the supplier.
Connect measuring currentThe UMG96L is designed for the connection of../1A and ../5A current transformers. With thecurrent inputs, only alternating current but nodirect current can be measured.
Check current directionShort circuit two current transformers on thesecondary. The real power in the connectedphase has to be:Positive (+) for consumption of real power andnegative (-) for supply of real power (power sta-tion service).In case that no real power is indicated, the as-signment of voltages and currents may bewrong.
Check phase assignmentThe assignment of the outer conductors to thecurrent transformer is correct, if a current trans-former is short circuited on the secondary, andthe indicated current in the correspondingphase decreases to a value at the UMG96L,which corresponds to the secondary currentplus tolerance.
Attention!Current transformers may not be han-dled in open condition, as there might belive voltage at the secondaries.
Please connect the current inputs one after theother, and compare the indicated current of thedisplay with the actual current. Please note,that the current transformer ratio is set to 5/5Aand has to be adapted to the existing currenttransformers.In case that the current transformer is shortcircuited on the secondary, the indicated cur-rent at the corresponding conductor at UMG96L has to decrease to a value, that corre-sponds to the secondary current plus tolerance.The current indicated by UMG 96L, has to con-form to the input current, under considerationof the current transformer and tolerance.

Usage and indicationThe usage of the UMG96L is carried out via thekeys one and two. Measured values and pro-gramming data are indicated on the liquid crys-tal display. You must distinguish between
Indication mode andProgramming mode.
By entering a password, you can avoid uninten-tional change of programming data.
Indication modeIn indication mode please scroll through theprogrammed measured value indications byusing the keys 1 and 2. When the device is de-livered, you can call up all measured valuesshown in table 1. For each measured value in-dication, up to three measured values are indi-cated. The measured value rotation allows toindicate all selected measured values on an al-ternate basis with a selectable changing time.
Programming modeIn programming mode the settings, which arenecessary for the operation of the UMG96L,can be indicated and changed. Pressing thekeys 1 and 2 simultaneously for about 1 sec-ond, you reach programming mode via thepassword indication. If no user password is pro-grammed, you reach the first programmingmenu directly. The programming mode ismarked with the text PRG in the display.With key 2 you can shift between the program-ming menues.
If you are in the programming mode and nokeys are pressed for 60 seconds, or you pressthe keys 1 or 2 simultaneously for approx. 1second, you return to the indication mode.

Averaging timesA mean value is calculated for the most at thecurrent and power values. A common averag-ing time for the current measured values L1,L2, L3 and N , as well as one for power meas-ured values, real power, apparent power and re-active power is programmable.

Measured value indicationOnce in a second all measured values are cal-culated and can be indicated on the display.Two methods are available for calling up themeasured value indications (see table 1).- The selection of measured value indicationsvia the keys 1 and 2, herein called measuredvalue selection.- The automatically rotating indications of se-lected measured value indications, hereincalled measured value rotation.
A measured value rotation time has be pro-grammed additionally for the measured valuerotation.
All mesured values for the measured value se-lection are preset by the manufactures. For theautomatic rotation nothing is preset by themanufacturer. The rotation time is preset with 0seconds.

Measured value rotation timeBoth methods are available simultaneously.The measured value rotation is programmed, ifat least one measured value indication and onemeasured value rotation time bigger than 0seconds is programmed. If no key is pressedfor about 60 seconds, an automatical changeto rotation mode will be carried out, and all pro-grammed measured values will be indicatedone after the other.
Setting range of measured value rotation time:0 .. 250 seconds
If 0 seconds are programmed, no rotation willbe carried out. Nevertheless, measured valueindications which are not programmed in themeasured value selection, can be used formeasured value rotation.

Working hours counterThe working hours counter detects the time, inwhich the UMG96L measures and indicatesdata. The time is measured with a resolution of15 minutes and is indicated in hours. The work-ing hours counter cannot be deleted.

User passwordA user password can be programmed in orderto avoid an unintentional change of program-ming data. Only after entering the correct pass-word, a shifting into the following programmingmenues possible.No user password by the manufacturer is pre-set (000). In this case, the password menu willbe skipped and you reach the current trans-former menu directly.
In case that a user password was programmed,a 000 appears in the display of the passwordmenu.The first digit of the password menu flashesand can be changed with key 2. By pressingkey 1, the next digit will be selected andflashes.Only after the correct password was entered,you reach the programming menu for the cur-rent transformer.In case that a changed password is not knownanymore, the device must be sent back to themanufacturer.
Software ReleaseThe internal software of the UMG96L will beimproved and extended continuously. The soft-ware update is registered in the device by aspecific number the so called software release.The software release cannot be changed by theuser.
