A FIVE-YEAR-OLD child was foundwith 30 Xanax tablets in a school inCork city. The incident took place onTuesday in a primary school andparents were alerted by the schoolabout the incident yesterday.Xanax is a tranquiliser which isregularly prescribed for sleepdisorders, anxiety and depression.A letter was sent to each child’sparents by the school, advising themof the incident.Gardaí were informed yesterday, butsaid today the matter is not an issuefor them as the tablets are notcontrolled substances. The HealthService Executive has also beennotified. A spokesman for the HSEsaid today that the executive cannotcomment on individual cases.But he said: “If and when an issue ofchildren protection or welfare isreported to the HSE, this is followed upin accordance with the Children’s Firstguidelines.”

THE Government said itmust continue to investin cycle lanes and streetimprovements despitepotholes going unrepairedon Cork’s roads.

Funding of €8.3m for variousprojects in the city and countywas announced today, includinga new entrance for Kent Station.

Making the announcement thismorning, Minister for Public &Commuter Transport Alan Kellysaid he understood the problem
