Prepared by Frank Westerlund, Ph.D.

2

Human occupancy of floodplains and urban riverfronts

Objectives:

26.1 Discuss the history and evolution of human occupancy of floodplains and urban riverfronts

26.2 Identify values people place on floodplains and riverfronts

Rational Method

RATIONAL MODEL FOR COMPUTING Q PEAK DISCHARGE FROM A WATERSHED OR SUBBASIN

Where Q = Peak discharge in cubic feet. Per second A = Area of the watershed in acres

C = Coefficient of runoff for the watershed, based on area-proportional, combined runoff coefficients for slop, land cover and

soil typesT = Concentration time (in minutes) I = Maximum rainfall intensity (in inches per hour) that can occur

during the concentration timeM = Mannings’s coefficient of roughness

Q = f ( A, C, T, I, M )
