What are the targets of refining?
Refining adjusts the fiber properties and consequently the technological properties of the furnish during the production process and the quality of the final paper
Most important parameters are:
1. Strength properties (wet and dry)
2. Air permeability
Formation
1. Bulk
It´s not the initial target
to increase the
dewatering resistance!
5
Intensity of refining and specific edge load
High intensity
Low intensity
SAME power transfer!
In a long term research at Voith it was proven that each fiber species has an refining intensity where the properties are fully developed and the required energy consumption is on low level.

7
Rough enviroment of papermaking
With the recycled paper a lot of trash is fed into the stock prep system
When problems happen in the system, sometimes it ends up in the refiner or disperger

Pluralis refines more fibers homogeneously
• Highly sectored design means uniform treatment from ID to OD
• A controlled fiber guidance enables more fibers to be treated
• Constant or widening groove opening from ID to OD is ideal for handling contaminants

Pluralis fillings for TissueIncreased volume and high softness
Volume and softness are essential factors in the production of tissue paper.
Fines from the refining process would be very unwanted here.
Refining with less edge load preserves volume and prevents the formation of fines.
As is known, Pluralis is a very fine filling which implements gentle refining.
Many satisifed customers confirm these favorable characteristics when refining for tissue.

Statements from satisfied customers that changed to Pluralis refiner fillings
• Pluralis plates resulted in same sheet strength at higher freeness (CSF)
• Higher headbox freeness resulted in more then 100 m per min machine speed increase
• Caliper (bulk) increased 3%-5% while maintaining tensile specs
• Lower fines and improved drainage
• The operators like the plates, the refiners are much more sensitive to slight changes in load
• Able to shut down one refiner on some grades while maintaining tensile specs
• Approximately 19% energy savings
• Less dust in converting
• 25-45% lower starch usage while maintaining tensile targets
• Reduced consumption of wet strength resin and improved haptics
