2 North Side Community School 2020-2021 Report Card
Thank you all for your continued support of our students during this very challenging school year. We are so grateful to be a part of a generous community. From donations of masks and water bottles, virtual tutors who gave their time to our students, and monetary donations to support necessary supplies for learning — we could not have done it without you. Thanks to your support we successfully delivered a hybrid learning experience, completed a major capital project and celebrated our very first graduating eighth grade class.
Though we had moments to celebrate, the pandemic greatly disrupted learning for our students. Virtual learning led to increased absenteeism and lower performance in reading and math. Throughout the year we proposed various interventions to combat the learning and developmental loss our students were experiencing. Despite herculean efforts of teachers conducting classes in an entirely new and untested format, we know our academic progress did not match previous years. We are re-doubling our efforts to ensure our students catch up to the expectations of parents, staff and administration. For the 2021-22 school year we are pleased to be fully in-person and prepared to continue efforts to ensure our students are grade-level ready.
We hope to see you this year on on campus! Thank you for being a great partner and supporting positive youth development.
With gratitude,
John GroteJohn GroteExecutive Director

How We Responded to the PandemicThroughout the Covid-19 crisis over the last 18 months, our students, families and educators have shown resilience and supported one another in many ways. North Side provided technology for all students, internet access to support virtual and hybrid learning and meals for the community. We supported our educators by providing weekly professional development and hiring additional teaching assistants to provide small group interventions. Our school social workers continued phone and home visits to connect families to additional resources and support in the community.

Elementary Campus ExpansionWe are thrilled to share that we completed our Beyond Expectations Capital Campaign in 2020. This project included a brand new building on our elementary campus with four new classrooms, as well as an expansion of our cafeteria. This project has increased our capacity to serve an additional 60 students on our elementary campus. Visit our website for a virtual tour!

8th Grade & Beyond North SideDuring the 2020-21 school year we welcomed our very first 8th grade class. North Side opened in 2009 serving 58 kindergarten and first grade students. Over the past 12 years we have expanded to serve nearly 500 students in prekindergarten to eighth grade across three campuses.
Our mission is to improve each student’s opportunities in education and in life by developing the skills, knowledge, and personal qualities necessary for success. In order to support our students beyond North Side, we have a high school placement coordinator working with our middle school students and families to support their transition from North Side to high school.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Third Baptist Church Des Peres Urban Endowment Fund, we hosted our first high school, college and career readiness event. Students heard from various high schools, colleges and universities and explored their interests for the future.

Fundraising EventsThe Young Friends of North Side hosted a fundraiser at Topgolf to support supplies necessary for virtual and in-person instruction. The sold-out event raised over $8,000!
The Magic of Childhood Gala was held on May 13th, 2021. 160 guests tuned into the event virtually and nearly $100,000 was raised to support North Side! Guests enjoyed special performances by our students, testimonials from parents, students, teachers and an alum. The event also recognized Stella Erondu, co-founder and founding principal of North Side for her 12 years of service to the school. Missed the event? Catch the videos on our YouTube Channel or website.
