FROM THE PRINCIPAL
This term is providing many engaging, interesting and challenging learning experiences for the
students at Milgate PS. The Year 3 and 4 students are looking forward to their camp next week at Mt
Evelyn with exciting activities such as bike riding, flying fox, ropes course, archery, etc. Prep – Year 4
students have visited the Life Ed van this week and have participated in lessons about healthy eating,
drug education, peer pressure, learning to say no and how to help a friend. One of the highlights has
been meeting Harold the giraffe. The Year 6 students are participating in Family Life sessions about
growing up and the changes they experience. The Year 5 and 6 students went on an Art Walk in the
city this week exploring the art in the streets of Melbourne. This links into their PYP unit of inquiry
‘How we Express Ourselves’. The Year 5 and 6 students are very busy rehearsing for their musical
‘Kids in Space’ to be performed on Tuesday 18 September and Wednesday 19 September at the
Warrandyte High School theatre. The Year Prep – 2 students are also learning and practising their
circus skills each week in preparation for their ‘Circus Performance’ on Thursday 13 September at the
Doncaster Secondary College theatre. All of these performances are wonderful opportunities for
students to develop their creative skills and perform on the stage.
Over the last two weeks various schools that also offer the IB PYP program have been open for
teachers to visit. We have had teachers visiting the following schools: Wesley College (two
campuses), Fintona School, Coatesville PS, Mount View PS and Murrumbeena PS. This has been
very worthwhile as teachers have learnt more about the PYP and also been able to bring back ideas
for displays and learning programs.
LITERACY AND NUMERACY WEEK Next week is Literacy / Numeracy week across the state and the students will be writing stories,
reading, etc. All the stories / class books will be displayed in the school entrance area at the end of
next week. There will also be a story time session in the library on Friday 31 August for pre-school
children starting Prep in 2013 from 2:15 – 3:15pm. On Thursday 6 September from 6pm – 8pm there
will be a family Maths night for all students across the school. There will be activities for all levels from
Prep – Year 6 and it will be held in the Year 6 building. We hope to see many parents and students
come along to participate in the maths activities together. There will also be a special visitor on the
night who may do some magic tricks.

‘PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY’ PROGRAM The Principal for a Day program which is conducted by DEECD gives schools, business people and
community leaders the chance to develop stronger relationships. Participating schools host a
successful community or business leader, who shadows the principal for a day, gaining a firsthand
and current experience of school life.
Last year almost 100 schools joined in, hosting a range of business and community members
including a journalist from The Age newspaper, the Premier of Victoria and a university professor.
Most schools and businesses that participate in Principal for a Day develop an ongoing and lasting
relationship.
Milgate PS was selected as part of this program and on Wednesday 22 August, Siobhan Forbes,
General Manager, Strategy and Business Operations, National Australia Bank came to Milgate PS to
be our Principal For A Day.
The theme this year is Step Up For Schools and Siobhan’s support as a business leader with the
National Australia Bank was a wonderful way to share her specific professional and industry
experience with Milgate Primary School. She talked to the school leaders and house leaders about
their leadership in the school and shared some of her experiences with them and the staff. She also
went on a tour of the school speaking with staff and students about education, learning and the
programs at Milgate PS.

We currently have four families who have confirmed their attendance at our Level 4 Working Bee on

final touches to this beautiful space.
If any other members of the community wish to assist us in building this garden please complete the

develop our school grounds without the generous support of the school community.
A yummy morning tea is provided!
LANDSCAPING AROUND THE YEAR 6 BUILDING The end is nigh! The final touches are being completed on our extensive landscaping development. I
am excited to tell you that the project manager has informed me that if the weather is kind all the
works should be completed by the end of next week.
We are so excited to open this area to our school community and to provide our students with an
outstanding learning and recreation environment.

LOTE EXTENSION
This year we have offered a LOTE Extension Program to Year 3 and 4 students in addition to the
normal LOTE lessons each week. From their expressions of interest, a group of students from each
level were selected for the program. ‘Chinese ribbon dance’ and ‘Chinese food and cooking’ were the
two topics we studied in Semester 1. In these topics, students have been enthusiastic and inquisitive.
The program has provided an opportunity for them to gain knowledge through their own investigation
and experiences. Here are some of our student’s reflections for the semester one program.
Wan-Ping Nixon LOTE Teacher
I found the ribbon dance was an amazing experience. It was a fun way to look deeper into Chinese
cultural history. I thought it was very enjoyable. Being introduced to this dance was very exciting!
By: Sarah H 4GA
LOTE Extension last semester was great. I loved learning the Chinese dance and performing. I had
lots of fun spending time with Ms. Nixon and the rest of the group every week. Thanks to Ms. Nixon for
teaching us the dance.
By: Juliette C 4BW
I think that LOTE Extension is a great new addition to what we are doing at Milgate. I really enjoyed
cooking different dishes and learning different things in Mandarin. It was great fun and it was one of the
things I looked forward to each week. I got to meet and work with other people that I normally wouldn’t
work with. It was awesome!

WOOLWORTHS [EARN AND LEARN] & COLES [SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS] These programs are now closed. If you or anyone you know have any more at home please send
them into the school as soon as possible so we can finalise the counting and order resources for the
school. Valuable resources will be able to be purchased by the school as a result of your shopping
dollars. We’ll keep the boxes in the Office for a week or two yet so please keep sending in your sticker
cards and vouchers. Thanks to all the families who have been collecting their stickers and/or vouchers
- thanks for your support. A special thank you to Rae for counting the Woolworths stickers and a huge
THANK YOU to all the Mums that helped count the mountains of Coles vouchers! You all did a
wonderful job and it is greatly appreciated.
FOOD BANK Don't forget we have a food bank for those friends and families of the school community who might
need short or long term help with meals for any number of reasons. If any assistance is required
please speak with Debbie Mierisch, Mark Roberts or any of our office staff or teachers for confidential
assistance. The school community just cook the meals, we don't need to know who eats them!!
THE ATHLETE’S FOOT
This program is still running so if you are buying new shoes from the Athletes Foot then mention you
are from Milgate Primary School and we'll get $5 for each pair of shoes purchased. Money raised will
go towards sports equipment for the school.
MONSTER RAFFLE Tickets went home over the last week. If you sell them all you can get more books, but just remember
they need to be returned [either the stubs or complete books if unsold] before the fete. An amazing 1st
prize is up for grabs and will be drawn at Milfete on Saturday 27th October.
We also have a highest ticket seller prize for the top two ticket sellers. A flyer will be going home today
with more information. Good luck everyone!
NEXT MEETING This will be held in the conference room in September. I will advise the date in the next newsletter.
We welcome a new member who has come along but we need more of you! We would love to see
you there if you can make it and see what we are up to. We discuss all sorts of things for your children
and without the P&F many of the activities we provide for the children will not be run. Your time
commitment is whatever you can spare and it is great for our children to see us involved in their school.
We really do need the community to get behind us and get involved so if you have a spare half hour
please come and be a part of it.
