HEAD COACH STEVE RO BE RTSNot long after leading Arkansas State to the 2005 Sun Belt Conference cham-
pionship and New Orleans Bowl, head coach Steve Roberts continues to
make ASU a dominant force in the Sun Belt Conference and has ASU on
track for continued success in the upcoming years.
When the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year took over the
program in December 2001, he impressed everyone with his wide-eyed en-
thusiasm and limitless energy. And, most of all, they believed that Roberts
would bring success to the ASU football program. Roberts has been the driv-
ing force behind ASU’s recent success, leading the football program to its
most victories over an eight-year span since 1985-92.
Roberts came to Arkansas State University and brought with him a fresh
enthusiasm, energy, and an “I Will” philosophy that has been adopted by
everyone associated with the program.
“I Will” became the rallying cry as Roberts and his staff charged ahead
through a grueling 13-game schedule in 13 weeks with no open date in his
inaugural season and came within 11 points of winning the Sun Belt Confer-
ence championship and playing in the Sun Belt Conference prize—the New
Orleans Bowl.
ASU ended the season with a record of 6-7 and finished third in the
league rankings. That tied the most wins since rejoining Division I-A in 1992.
The Red Wolves finished in the top ten turnarounds by Division I-A football
schools for improving football records after finishing 2-9 in 2001.
Under Roberts’ direction, ASU continues to add to the achievements
that began upon his arrival. Not only did ASU represent the Sun Belt Con-
ference in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl, it claimed its first league champi-
onship since 1986. Arkansas State went undefeated at home that season
and is now 29-10 all-time at ASU Stadium under Roberts. The bowl ap-
pearance was ASU’s first since playing in the 1970 Pecan Bowl.
ASU has been bowl eligible three of the last five seasons and the last
four Roberts’ coached teams backed up the 2005 Sun Belt championship
with non-conference victories over teams such as Army, Memphis, SMU and
Texas A&M. The Red Wolves’ 2008 win over the Aggies was one of the
biggest wins in school history as ASU picked up its first victory over a BCS
conference school since joining the FBS.
The Red Wolves have finished among the top three teams in the Sun
Belt Conference four times, but ASU has also been competitive during
Roberts’ tenure against the nation’s elite teams. ASU fell to then-ranked No.
25 Memphis by just 12 points in 2004, No. 4 Texas by eight points in 2007
and No. 13 Iowa by three points in 2009.
In addition to the 2002 and 2008 teams, the 2005 and 2006 squads both
posted six wins to mark the first time since the 1986 and 1987 seasons the
Red Wolves recorded at least six victories in back-to-back seasons. Roberts
already holds the fifth most wins among ASU’s 26 all-time head and needs
just 12 more victories to move into second on the list.
The 2008 Roberts’ coached team holds the all-time school record for
single-season offense and the ASU defense has ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the
Sun Belt Conference each of the last four seasons.
Over the last eight years, ASU has picked up 70 all-conference selec-
tions, including at least 10 four of the last five years. ASU had 11 players
named all-conference in 2008, its most ever as a member of the SBC. The
Red Wolves placed 10 players on the list in 2002, 2005 and 2006, and nine
in 2007.
Roberts has coached a Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, Of-
fensive Player of the Year, two Defensive Player of the Year winners and a
Newcomer of the Year.
The Red Wolves have had four NFL draft picks under Roberts, includ-
ing David Johnson in 2009, Tyrell Johnson in 2008, Oren O’Neal in 2007 and
Corey Williams in 2004. Johnson was a second-round selection and the third
highest drafted player in ASU history. Alex Carrington, the 2008 Sun Belt
Conference Defensive Player of the Year, is also expected by many experts
to be a high draft selection in 2010. Additonally, 13 ASU players have either
been drafted or signed NFL free agent contracts since Roberts’ first season
in 2002.
With five Sun Belt Conference Team Academic Awards, Roberts has
made academics a priority as well for the Red Wolves. ASU consistently
2010 ASU FOOT BALL S P RING P ROS PECTUS 7 astateredwolves.com
places a large number of players on the ASU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll
and Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll. The most recent ASU AD’s
Honor Roll saw 45 football players make the list.
Attendance has show significant improvement during the Roberts era.
ASU has drawn a crowd of over 20,000 in 15 games all-time at ASU Stadium
and six of those have come over the last nine games. Of those 15 games,
11 have been played with Roberts as head coach.
A stadium-record crowd was of 30,427 was on hand to watch ASU play
Memphis in 2004, and ASU set the best average attendance mark of 21,105
in 2008.
During his tenure, ASU has upgraded its facilities with a new training
room, weight room, locker room, recruiting room and state-of-the-art Pro-
Green turf on the field.
Roberts was named Arkansas State’s 26th head football coach on De-
cember 21, 2001, to bring full circle his coaching odyssey from his home
state through Louisiana and back. But, the trek has been a successful one,
including an 8-4 record and national ranking in Division I-AA in 2000 at North-
western (La.) State.
Roberts spent two seasons at NSU, where he and his staff and team
took on a tough schedule which included a 27-24 overtime upset at TCU.
While at NSU, Roberts was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach
of the Year Award. Prior to going to NSU, Roberts served as the head coach
and defensive coordinator at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia from
1994-99. While there, his 1997 team won the Gulf South Championship,
earning him Gulf South Coach of the Year honors. The Muleriders finished
with a cumulative record of 26-5 from 1997-99, including 9-1 in 1999, 8-2 in
1998 and 9-2 in 1997.
During that span, his teams enjoyed top conference rankings in scoring
offense, scoring defense, total offense and total defense. At SAU, he also
served as the defensive secondary coach and recruiting coordinator from
1990-94 before being named head coach. Academically, his program ranked
first in academic achievements in the Gulf South Conference three seasons.
Roberts, an avid fisherman, graduated from Robinson High School in
Little Rock. A 1987 graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, where he was
an Academic All-American, Roberts received his masters from SAU in 1989.
He and his wife Sherri have one daughter – Abby (14).

ASSISTANT COACHES
KEVIN CO RLESS (9th Season)
Assistant Head CoachDefensive Coordinator/LinebackersNorthwest Missouri State, 1985
Kevin Corless is in his ninth season after coming to
ASU in January 2002 as the assistant head coach and
co-defensive coordinator.
Corless took over sole ownership of the defensive
coordinator title before the 2009 season and he is also in charge of coaching
ASU's linebackers.
Corless and the defensive staff guided the Red Wolves Strike Force De-
fense to the ninth best turnaround in the country in 2002. The ASU defense im-
proved by jumping up in total defense rankings by 41 spots from 80 in 2001 to
39th in 2002. The swarming Red Wolves defense sacked opposing quarter-
backs 33 times in 2002, up from eight the previous season. Interceptions im-
proved from five in 2001 to 16 the following year.
ASU’s defense has been consistently strong since 2002 and has seen a
number of players pick up all-conference accolades, including linebackers Ben
Owens, Devrett Wade, Koby McKinnon, Josh Williams and Les Echols.
Williams was named to two freshman All-America teams.
ASU’s defense has ranked among the top two units in the Sun Belt Con-
ference and top 50 in the nation each of the last four years, including 2007 and
2009 when it led the league and 2006 when it ranked 32nd in the nation.
Not only did ASU lead the conference in total defense in 2009, it ranked
No. 41 in the nation. The Red Wolves also ranked 30th nationally in rushing
defense and 45th in scoring defense. ASU allowed just two 100-yard rushers
during the season. The defense also featured All-Sun Belt Conference selec-
tion and former SBC Player of the Year Alex Carrington, who ranked tied for
first in the conference in sacks and third in tackles for loss.
The 2008 team ranked second in the SBC and 46th in the nation in total
defense. The unit also ranked 39th in the nation in passes intercepted, pick-
ing off at least one pass in nine of the Red Wolves 12 games. The 2008 team
also posted 26 sacks to rank 37th in the nation in the stat. Under his tutelage,
Owens led the team in tackles and became the first player in ASU history to be
named a national defensive player of the week.
The 2007 team ranked first in the Sun Belt conference and 43rd in the na-
tion in total defense after finishing the 2006 campaign ranked second in the
conference and 32nd in the country. Senior linebacker Koby McKinnon led
the team in tackles and was an all-conference pick for the second consecutive
year.
Corless coached a 2003 defense which saw two players go to the NFL
(Corey Williams to Green Bay and Jon Bradley to Tampa Bay). He had a line-
backer lead the nation in tackles among all freshmen in 2004 and the 2005
Red Wolves’ defense picked up 870 tackles, 59 more than their opponents.
That defense also recorded 27 sacks for minus 173 yards, 12 forced fumbles
and 13 recovered and 86 other stops behind the line for minus 287 yards.
Corless came to Jonesboro after seven years at Northwestern (La.) State.
While there, Corless' defenses consistently ranked in the Top 10.
While at NSU, he also developed one of the top punt return units in the
country led by All-American Terrance McGee (Buffalo 4th round) and a Pro
Bowl selection. NSU finished number one in the country in return yardage in
1998.
Corless moved to linebacker coach prior to the 1999 season coaching
All-American Kurt Rodriguez who helped lead the Demons to become the 16th-
ranked defense in the country after losing nine starters from the 13th-ranked
defensive units in 1998.
Prior to his arrival at NSU, Corless coached the linebackers and coordi-
nated special teams at Montana Tech from 1987 to 1995 and helped lead a
team that not won a game in three seasons to many winning seasons and a
conference title and the school's first appearance in the national playoffs in
1992.
He began his coaching career in 1984 at Northwest Missouri State coach-
ing linebackers from 1984 to 1987. He helped lead NWMSU to MIAA confer-
ence championship, a 10-2 record and the national playoffs.
An all-conference linebacker and four-year letterman at Northwest Mis-
souri State University, Corless earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at
NWMSU.
Born September 10, 1961, in Kansas City, Mo., Corless graduated from
O'Hara High School in 1980 where he was a team captain broke the single
season and career tackles record.
He is married to the former Stacey Danahy of Hopkinton, Mass., and they
have three children-Anne (18), Caitlin (15) and Joe (13).
HUGH F REEZE (1st Season)
Offensive Coordinator/QuarterbacksSouthern Mississippi, 1992
Hugh Freeze enters his first season as an assis-
tant coach with the ASU football program.
Freeze, who compiled a 20-5 record the last two
seasons at the helm of the Lambuth University foot-
ball program, was announced as the Red Wolves of-
fensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Feb. 26, 2010.
Freeze was named San Jose State’s offensive coordinator on January
5 of this year, but spent less than two months with the Spartans’ program
before coming to Arkansas State.
Freeze was named the American Football Coaches Association’s South-
east Region Coach of the Year and in 2009 after leading the Eagles to their
best regular season in school history with an 11-0 record. Under Freeze’s
direction, Lambuth won the Mid-South Conference West Division, ad-
vanced to the second round of the NAIA playoffs for the first time since
1999, finished the year with a 12-1 mark and ascended to the No. 6 rank-
ing in NAIA.
The Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year oversaw the offense and
called the plays for a Lambuth team that averaged over 40 points per game
and ranked ninth nationally in total yards per game (465 ypg). The Eagles
also ranked first in the nation in fourth down conversions, fourth in first
downs per game and third down conversions, fifth in passing offense and
eighth in scoring offense per game.
“We are very excited about adding coach Freeze to our staff,” said
Roberts. “He is a great person, an outstanding recruiter and has experi-
enced success everywhere he has been. Offensively, his system has been
extremely successful, and his plan has been to utilize tempo and a wide
open approach incorporating the spread offense.”
“The opportunity to come back near home to be a coordinator for a great
man and coach like Steve Roberts, in a wonderful place like Jonesboro
and at an outstanding university like Arkansas State, was an excellent op-
portunity for me and my family that I could not pass up,” said Freeze.
Prior to taking over as head coach at Lambuth, Freeze served as in-
terim head coach at the University of Mississippi in November of 2007 and
was an assistant coach with the Rebels from 2005-07. He was named the
Rebels’ recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach before the 2006 sea-
son after originally serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Football Ex-
ternal Affairs upon his arrival in Oxford.
In his first year as recruiting coordinator, he helped bring in the nation’s
13th ranked recruiting class, the highest in the history of the program.
Freeze was responsible for the recruitment of nine signees, including two
that went on to be named Freshman All-America, in the class alone.
While maintaining his duties as recruiting coordinator, he moved to wide
receivers coach in 2007 and tutored two players that were ranked among
the top-15 players in receiving in the SEC. Ole Miss’ 2007 signing class
was ranked 25th nationally and he was responsible for nine commitments
in the 2008 signing class.
Before going to Ole Miss, Freeze served 13 years at Briarcrest Christian
School in Memphis, Tenn., as a classroom teacher, coach and adminis-
trator. He was the Saints head football coach from 1995 to 2004, running
the no huddle “spread system” for six years that led to six straight state
championship games.
Freeze compiled a 99-23 record, which included an undefeated season
in 1996, while at Briarcrest and led the school to state championship titles
in 2002 and 2004. Briarcrest won regional championships in 1995, 1996,
1997, 1998, 2001 and 2002, and Freeze was named the Region 8-AA
Coach of the Year five times and Associated Press Coach of the Year four
times.
Before assuming the role of head coach at Briarcrest, Freeze served as
the Saints offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1992-
1994 as the Saints reached the TSSAA state semifinals twice.
A 1988 graduate of Senatobia (Miss.) High School, Freeze earned his
bachelors degree in mathematics with a minor in coaching and sports ad-
ministration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992.
Hugh and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three daughters, Ragan, Jor-
dan, and Madison.

ASSISTANT COACHES
TONY GILBE RT (9th Season)
Cornerbacks / Recruiting CoordinatorSouthwest Missouri State, 1989
Tony Gilbert has earned quite a reputation as
Arkansas State’s recruiting coordinator. The numbers
speak for themselves as the seasons go for ASU. Sta-
tistics, records, NFL players and athletic accolades all
add up for Gilbert and the staff as they rate the re-
cruits.
In fact, Rivals.com ranked ASU’s 2007 recruiting class as the second
best in the Sun Belt Conference and three players signed NFL contracts in
2008, including second round NFL Draft selection Tyrell Johnson. Most re-
cently, David Johnson was selected in the 2009 NFL Draft, marking the third
consecutive year an ASU player has been taken in the draft, and Alex Car-
rington is a highly-rated NFL prospect as the 2010 NFL Draft approaches.
Not only that, Gilbert is quite a coach when it comes to ASU’s corner-
backs and defensive backfield. He helped coach an ASU secondary that
led the 2006 defense to the 12th best pass defense in the country and also
ranked ninth in passes intercepted. The 2008 and 2009 squads followed
that up with a No. 2 pass defense ranking in the Sun Belt Conference both
seasons.
Most recently, the 2009 ASU defense ranked third in the Sun Belt Con-
ference in passing defense and featured cornerback Daylan Walker, an All-
Sun Belt Conference selection that finished his career with 16 pass
break-ups. Under Gilbert’s direction, the Red Wolves have seen a corner-
back named all-conference six times.
During the 2002 season, Gilbert coached Sun Belt Conference New-
comer of the Year Jonathan Burke and All-Sun Belt Conference player
Chuck Allen. In 2003, Burke was a first-team All-Sun Belt selection. In 2005,
fleet-footed James Johnson was a second-team All-Sun Belt selection. The
2006 and 2008 campaigns saw cornerback Dominique Williams earn all-
conference recognition as well.
Gilbert joined the ASU coaching staff January 2, 2002 as the cornerbacks
coach and re cruit ing co or di na tor.
Before coming to ASU, Gilbert served as the as sis tant head coach at
Cen tral Ar kan sas and also coached re ceiv ers.
In 2001, UCA fin ished with a record of 9-3 and the school’s first-ever trip
to the NCAA Di vi sion II play offs.
Although he coached at UCA, Tony Gil bert is no strang er to Steve Rob -
erts. The two coached to geth er at South ern Ar kan sas where Gil bert was
Rob erts’ de fen sive co or di na tor. While there, his de fense was ranked No. 1
in 1997 and 1999.
Prior to that, he served four years as the running backs coach at South-
east Missouri State where he coached four con sec u tive 1,000-yard rush ers.
He started his career as a grad u ate as sis tant at South west Mis sou ri State.
An all-conference pick at run ning back at SMSU, Gilbert helped his team
to a 1989 Gate way Con fer ence cham pi on ship. He was named all-confer-
ence in 1986 and 1989 and was SMSU’s all-time lead ing kick returner. Fol-
lowing grad u a tion in 1989, he signed a free agent con tract with the New
York Gi ants in 1991.
He received his master’s de gree in communication from Southwest Mis-
souri State in 1998.
Tony is married to the former Regina Kuykendall of Blytheville and they
have two children—Jacqueline, who attended St. Louis University on a bas-
ketball scholarship and graduated with a degree in communication tech-
nology , and Tony II. Regina earned her Bachelor degree from Arkansas
State in December of 2006.
CO REY BATOON (2nd Season)
SafetiesLong Beach State, 1991
Corey Batoon enters his second season at ASU after
joining the Red Wolves coaching staff during the team’s
2009 fall camp.
Batoon took over as safeties coach at Arkansas
State after spending the previous 11 seasons as the as-
sistant head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Northern
Arizona University. He also spent time as the special teams coordinator during
his time with the Lumberjacks.
His first season at ASU saw the Red Wolves’ secondary help lead the de-
fense to a No. 1 ranking in total defense and No. 2 ranking in passing defense.
He coached safety Keclie McCray, who led the team in interceptions with four
as just a sophomore.
Batoon developed the Lumberjacks into one of the top defensive units in the
Big Sky Conference while earning NAU a reputation nationally for its defensive
play. He tutored 42 student-athletes to all-conference honors 61 times and de-
veloped four NFL players during his tenure. His defensive unit ranked among
the top two units in the conference and top 20 in the country against the run
three times as well.
In his final season in Flagstaff, Batoon’s defense led the Football Champi-
onship Subdivision in rushing yards allowed at 59.8 yards per game while lead-
ing the nation in sacks. NAU’s rushing yards allowed per game and total yards
allowed both set Big Sky Conference single-season records.
One of Batoon’s top prodigies was NFL product K.J Gerard, who he coached
to back-to-back All-America seasons in 2007 and 2008. Gerard set the school
record for interceptions with 19, the fifth-best total in Big Sky history, and finished
his career ranked tied for first in interceptions among active career leaders in the
Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and Division I overall with 19.
In 2006, linebacker Chris Hunsaker led the nation in tackles for loss, earning
All-America third-team honors from three different media outlets. Gerard also led
the Big Sky in interceptions and ranked second on the team with 73 tackles in
2005, earning All-Big Sky second team honors. Safety Jeff Singleton was third
on the team in tackles with 70, garnering ESPN the Magazine Academic All-
District honors.
Batoon played a major role in the success of the NAU program over the last
11 seasons highlighted by an NCAA I-AA quarterfinal appearance and Big Sky
Conference title in 2003. The Lumberjack defense tied for the national lead in
2003 with Alabama A&M in interceptions with 24 recorded. Twelve different play-
ers recorded at least one pick, helping the team rank fifth nationally with 36
turnovers overall. NAU also ranked first in the conference in turnover margin
(17th nationally), second against the run (11th nationally) and second in pass
efficiency defense.
Batoon tutored six student-athletes to All-Big Sky honors in 2002, including
first-team pick Keith O'Neil, who played last season with the Indianapolis Colts,
and Mike Sands at linebacker.
NAU also ranked among the top defensive units in the Big Sky in 2001, high-
lighted by its effectiveness against the run in allowing just 107.8 rushing yards
per game while giving up a conference-low 12 rushing touchdowns. Overall,
the Lumberjacks ranked third in total defense, while finishing first in the Big Sky
and 15th in the nation against the run. NAU also ranked 11th nationally in fum-
bles gained (16) and 20th in turnovers (29).
In 2000, the Lumberjacks ranked fourth in the conference in total defense
and produced All-Big Sky selections Kawika Batoon (DB), Malachi Keddington
(DE) and Raymond Perryman (DB), who was a fifth-round pick of the Oakland
Raiders in the NFL Draft.
In 1999, Batoon's secondary intercepted 16 passes and deflected 32 balls,
ranking as the conference’s No. 2-rated pass efficiency defense squad. In 1998,
NAU picked off 10 passes and deflected 37 on the way to the No. 2-rated pass
and overall defense in the conference. He helped develop safety Perryman, just
a junior in 1999, and enabled Cleve Dansby to post his best season as the free
safety and earn an honorable mention All-Big Sky selection.
Batoon came to NAU after a year at Montana working with the defensive line.
Prior to that, he was special teams coordinator and secondary coach at Central
Missouri State after two years at Saint Mary’s (Calif.) and a three-year stint at
Pierce Junior College in Los Angeles.
Batoon played at San Diego City Junior College and later at Long Beach
State (1988-89). He graduated from LBSU with a degree in political science in
1991, later earning a master’s in health, physical education and recreation from
Saint Mary’s in 1996.
Born in Honolulu, Batoon and his wife, Stacy, have two daughters, Brandy
(12) and Summer (9).

DAVI D GUNN (9th Season)
Running BacksArkansas, 1987
David Gunn has been blessed over the last sev-
eral years to be able to coach players such as Anto-
nio Warren, Shermar Bracey, Danny Smith, Reggie
Arnold and Derek Lawson. But, he is the one who
took that raw talent and taught those players to be
great running backs.
Most recently, running back Reggie Arnold was listed as a Doak Walker
Award candidate entering the 2007 and 2008 and 2009 seasons. Arnold en-
tered his senior year as the third leading active rusher in the NCAA and fin-
ished his career as ASU’s second all-time leader in total rushing yards and
tied for second in rushing touchdowns. Arnold piled up numerous awards,
including All-Sun Belt Conference honors three times.
Arnold and Lawson, who was listed on CBSSports.com’s “Freshman
Watch List”, were responsible for a combined 1,769 rushing yards on ASU’s
team that ranked No. 18 in the nation in rushing offense in 2008.
The 2009 squad saw two different ASU running backs rush for over 100
yards in a game and Lawson and Arnold combine for over 1,000 yards rush-
ing for the second straight season.
Since arriving at ASU in January 2002, the Red Wolves have seen some
powerful performances coming out of the backfield. In fact, his first season
featured Smith who broke ASU's all-time rushing record which had stood for
50 years.
Also, Coach Gunn proudly watched Smith receive Sun Belt Conference
Offensive Player of the Year Honors. A unanimous pick for first-team all-
conference, Smith ended up scoring 14 touchdowns while picking up 1,390
yards.
Then, Warren and Bracey churned out extraordinary rushing totals and
signed contracts with teams in the National Football League (Warren with
Cleveland and Bracey with Green Bay).
Gunn is used to seeing breakout performances and his players reap the
benefits from their hard work.
Prior to joining the ASU staff, he served as the head coach for Little Rock
McClellan High School and took his team to the 2001 AAAAA playoffs.
Gunn was the head coach at McClellan for five seasons taking the Crim-
son Tide to the playoffs twice. Prior to that, he served as the boys head
track coach at Watson Chapel High School in Pine Bluff.
While at Watson Chapel, he also served as the running backs and de-
fensive backs coach and helped that team go to the AAA playoffs three
straight years and won the 1996 state championship.
This was the second time at Watson Chapel for Gunn who began his ca-
reer as the linebackers and wide receivers coach from 1987-90.
Gunn, a native of England, Ark., who excelled in football, basketball and
track at England High School, has also coached at Lake Highlands High
School in Dallas, Tex., where he coached running backs and helped his
team to a 1990 conference title.
After graduating from England High School in 1982, he attended the Uni-
versity of Arkansas where he played defensive back and running back from
1982-87.
As a Razorback player, he played in the 1984 Liberty Bowl and the 1987
Orange Bowl. He graduated in 1987 with a bachelor of science in educa-
tion degree in physical education and biological science.
Born Nov. 16, 1963, Gunn is married to his high school sweetheart, the
former Aleachia Stephenson of England, and they have two daughters-
25-year-old Tiffany, a graduate of Notre Dame, and 16-year-old Bethany,
who is in the 11th grade.
MAU RICE HAR RIS (3rd Season)
Tight EndsArkansas State, 1998
Maurice Harris begins his third season with
Arkansas State after being named tight ends coach
on Jan. 15, 2008.
Harris coached All-Sun Belt Conference selec-
tions David Johnson, who was also drafted by the
NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, and J.T. Jordan during his first two seasons at
ASU. Harris also helped develop Kedric Murry into a starting tight end for
the Red Wolves as just a redshirt freshman in 2009, and Trevor Gillott
ranked third on the team in receptions and set individual career-best marks
last season under his watch.
During Harris’ first two seasons, the tight ends were responsible for 73 re-
ceptions for 1,027 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The tight ends were also heavily involved in the ASU running game that
ranked No. 18 in the nation and No. 2 in the Sun Belt Conference in 2008.
His 2009 tight ends corps helped lead the way for 21 rushing touch-
downs, the third most in the Sun Belt Conference, and paved the way for
three different ASU players rushing for over 100 yards in at least one game.
The tight ends were a big part of ASU's line that helped the offense to its
most yards of total offense (484) against an FBS opponent since the 2007
season as well.
Harris returned to his alma mater as tight ends coach after serving as Al-
abama State’s offensive coordinator and running backs coach during the
2007 season.
Harris worked with Alabama State Head Coach Reggie Barlow to design
the overall offensive game plan and calling plays, according to the Hornets’
2007 football media guide. He helped the offense improve its total yards
and points from the previous season and coached the Southwestern Athletic
Conference’s leading rusher and MVP Jay Peck.
Prior to his return to Alabama State, where he also served as the run-
ning backs coach and recruiting coordinator from 2004-05, Harris spent the
2006 season as Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Football Operations
at the University of Mississippi.
During his first stint at Alabama State, Harris helped lead the football team
to a 10-2 record in 2004 and the SWAC championship. In addition to his du-
ties as a position coach, Harris was responsible for organizing and plan-
ning the Hornets recruiting strategy.
Harris was a four-year letterman with the Red Wolves, including the 1996
season when he recorded a team-high 100 tackles from his safety position,
and after earning his bachelor’s degree from ASU in 1998, went to White-
haven High School in Memphis, Tenn., as an assistant coach.
He headed Whitehaven’s offense, which was tops in the area, and im-
proved its yardage by more than 100 yards per game from the previous
season. He was promoted to head coach at Whitehaven two years later and
was named West Tennessee Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading his
team to the city and region championships in 2001.
He followed the 2001 campaign up with another city title in 2002 and was
named assistant coach in two all-star games. He was named head coach
for the Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game in Tennessee.
During his three seasons as head coach at Whitehaven, Harris posted a
23-12 record and had 32 players sign scholarships to play college football.
Harris and his wife, LaQuesha, have children Arami (13), Cortlynn (10)
and Godson DeVonte’ (6).

ASSISTANT COACHES
DAR REN HILLE R (9th Season)
Offensive LineWest Texas State, 1994
Generally speaking, the offensive line is not
viewed as the group that fans spend most of the
game watching. Darren Hiller has changed that.
Hiller, who joined the ASU staff in January 2002,
has turned the o-line into an all-star lineup.
Most recently, the 2009 offensive line led the way for 21 rushing touch-
downs, the third most in the Sun Belt Conference, and paved the way for
three different ASU players rushing for over 100 yards in at least one game.
ASU's line helped the offense to its most yards of total offense (484) against
an FBS opponent since the 2007 season as well.
In 2008, the offensive line helped lead ASU to the nation’s 18th best rush-
ing attack and the most yards of total offense in school history. ASU also
finished the 2008 season ranked 39th in the nation and with the third high-
est offensive output in school history. Under Hiller’s direction, the offensive
line paved the way for ASU’s 2007 running game that finished ranked 29th
in the country.
Since coming to Arkansas State, the Red Wolves offensive line has im-
proved considerably in terms of skill and depth. Evidence includes two first-
team All-Sun Belt Conference performers in Tanner Jenkins and Matt
Mandich, who was on the 2008 Rotary Lombardi Award and Outland Tro-
phy watch lists as well as a four-time all-league selection.
Jenkins also started the 2006 season as a member of the Rotary Lom-
bardi Award and Dave Rimington Award watch lists. In addition, he was a
member of several preseason All-America and All-Sun Belt Conference
teams and was regarded as one of the top centers in the nation.
Joining Mandich on the 2008 All-Sun Belt Conference Team was tackle
Mark Clemons, and the 2009 campaign saw Derek Newton placed on the
all-conference squad as well.
In 2004, Hiller coached Steven Gibbs who joined the Seattle Seahawks.
In 2003, he coached first-team All-Sun Belt Conference performer Kimani
Jones, who has experience playing in the AFL. In 2002, Hiller coached All-
American Garry Johnson who went on to the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals as
well as second-team All-Sun Belt player John Crossley.
Hiller joined the staff at Northwestern (La.) State in the spring of 2001
after spending two seasons as the line coach at Arkansas-Monticello.
While at UAM, Hiller helped the team finish in the top five in Division II in
total offense and scoring offense. During that time, UAM also broke 30 of-
fensive school records.
A two-year starter at offensive guard at West Texas A&M (previously West
Texas State), he also coached there from 1994-98 and helped his teams to
national rankings in Division II and led that division in several offensive cat-
egories.
Born in Fremont, Calif., Hiller attended Washington High School where he
played offensive guard and inside linebacker. A team captain, he received
all-league honors. He went on to Chabot Junior College in Hayward, Calif.,
where he received all-conference honors at offensive guard. A team captain,
he was also a member of the GTE Academic All-America team.
While at Chabot, his team played in the 1991 Merced Elks Bowl against
Palomar Junior College for the national championship.
Born February 8, 1972, Hiller enjoys fishing and golfing and his chocolate
labrador named Champ.
He is married to the former Tracie Lenhart of Lubbock, Texas, and they
have two daughters, Hailey Marguerite (age 4) and Aubrey Kay (1).
KEVIN PEO PLES (9th Season)
Defensive LineCarroll College, 1993
Kevin Peoples begins his ninth season at
Arkansas State and will be able enter the 2009 cam-
paign with an optimistic outlook considering the talent
he has coming back along the defensive line.
The d-line returns All-Sun Belt Conference selec-
tion Bryan Hall in 2009, and is again expected to be solid with experienced
players such as Jeremy Gibson, Dorvus Woods, Timothy Starson and Greg
McCall coming back as well. That group was a big part of ASU’s defense
that ranked No. 1 in the Sun Belt Conference and No. 42 nationally last sea-
son. The Red Wolves also ranked 30th in the nation in rushing defense
and No. 1 in the conference in scoring defense.
Carrington and Hall are the latest in a long line of all-conference selec-
tions coached by Peoples at ASU. Peoples also coached All-Sun Belt Con-
ference selections Jamarrow James (2006), Jonathan Najm (2006), Myron
Anderson (2005), Jon Bradley (2002 & 2003) and Corey Williams (2002 &
2003). Not only that, Carrington was named the 2008 Sun Belt Conference
Defensive Player of the Year under People’s watch.
And now, Peoples, who is a player's dream when it comes to coaching,
can't wait. He is not only an on-the-field coach, but studies the game like a
scholar. He leaves no stone unturned when it comes to recognizing and de-
veloping talent on ASU's defensive line.
Peoples, who joined the ASU staff in January 2002, was selected from
500 coaches as one of the recipients of the AFLAC National Assistant
Coach of the Year Award for the 2002-03 season. The award is set up to rec-
ognize those coaches that made a significant contribution to their teams
and have generally gone unnoticed.
The Red Wolves went from 80th nationally in total defense in 2001 to
39th in 2002, the ninth best turnaround in the nation. Part of the reason was
the play of the defensive line, where Williams and Bradley combined for 17
sacks in 2002. By comparison, ASU had a total of eight sacks as a team the
season before.
In 2005, the Red Wolves defense had 27 sacks for 173 yards in losses
and spread them around.
Peoples had just completed his second year at Northwestern (La.) when
Roberts came calling from ASU.
After coaching the defensive line with Central Missouri for the 1997 sea-
son where he was the defensive line and strength and conditioning coach,
he moved on to XFL’s Las Vegas team.
In 1999, Peoples spent the season as the defensive line coach for North-
ern Arizona. Peoples returned to Natchitoches after coaching at Northern
Arizona for two years.
He began his coaching career at Carroll College in Montana in 1993 for
two years before joining the staff at Blinn Community College in Texas for
the 1995 season. The team at Blinn went on to win the national junior col-
lege championship in 1995.
A graduate of Carroll College in Helena Mont., with a degree in history,
he played linebacker and was named all-conference twice.
Born August 21, 1970, in Butte, Mont., Peoples graduated from Butte
Central High School.
He is married to the former Rebecca Chilton of Tucson, Ariz. Rebecca just
completed her sixth season as an assistant coach on ASU's women’s bas-
ketball staff, helping the team to three trips to the WNIT.

TYLE R SISKEY (3rd Season)
Wide ReceiversTroy, 2000
Tyler Siskey begins his third season at Arkansas
State after being named wide receivers coach on Feb.
27, 2008.
During Siskey’s first season at ASU, wide re-
ceivers Brandon Thompkins and Jahbari McLennan
led the team in receptions and receiving yards on a team that completed the
season with the fourth most passing yards in school history.
Last season, ASU was again led in receptions and receiving yards by re-
ceivers Thompkins and Taylor Clements, who both set career-best num-
bers under Siskey’s watch. Freshman Taylor Stockemer aslo emerged as
a dangerous threat for the Red Wolves last season, recording 16 catches
for 347 yards and a team-best 21.7 yards per catch.
Siskey came to ASU after serving the previous four years at St. Paul’s
Episcopal School in Mobile, AL, where he helped lead the Saints to the 2007
Alabama Class 5A state championship as the team’s offensive coordinator
and quarterbacks coach.
Siskey held the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach positions
at St. Paul’s for three seasons after serving one year as the Saints’ defen-
sive coordinator and secondary coach. His last three years at St. Paul’s, he
was responsible for the creation and execution of St. Paul’s offensive game
plan for a unit that averaged 35 points a game and 420 yards of total offense
in 2007.
The 2007 St. Paul’s offense piled up over 6,300 yards of total offense, a
3,800-yard improvement since Siskey took over the offense in 2005.
In addition to the 2007 state championship, Siskey also helped guide St.
Paul’s to the 2005 and 2006 state quarterfinals. The 2006 team’s offensive
production improved 1,000 yards from 2005 and averaged 37 points a
game. The 2005 team increased its total offense by 2,500 yards over the
2004 squad.
Siskey helped guide the Saints to the 2004 state playoffs, working as the
secondary coach and assisting the head coach in game planning and exe-
cution of the defensive game plan.
Prior to joining the St. Paul’s coaching staff, Siskey was an offensive grad-
uate assistant at Arkansas State for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. Working
with Roberts and the rest of the ASU coaching staff, Siskey assisted with of-
fensive line in 2002, wide receivers in 2003 and quarterbacks in the spring
of 2004.
Siskey also held an offensive graduate assistant coaching position at
Northwestern State University, where he was responsible for coaching tight
ends. Alongside Roberts, who was the head coach at Northwestern State
from 2000-01, he helped lead the Demons to the NCAA Division I-AA play-
offs and a national ranking. The 2001 Northwestern State team also upset
TCU 27-24 in overtime.
Siskey worked as a student assistant coach at Troy during the 2000 sea-
son. During his time at Troy, Siskey worked with the wide receivers, as-
sisted the offensive staff in game planning, helped with player evaluation
and assisted in recruiting.
Siskey earned his master’s in education from Northwestern State Uni-
versity in 2003 and his bachelor’s degree from Troy in 2000.
