services, providing therapy, and promoti ng

literacy skills for preschool through middle

school students. Keli also presents on the

topic of literacy development to SLPs and

other educators around the United States

at in-services, seminars and state and

nati onal conventi ons. She is author of the

Literacy Speaks!® program. Literacy Speaks!® introduces orthographic

instructi on (printed cues) in a comprehensive program that improves

speech intelligibility and language skills while promoti ng a strong literacy

foundati on. Keli is a past recipient of the Indiana Speech-Language-

Hearing Associati on’s Professional Achievement Award, which recognizes

outstanding professional development. She was a founding member

of the United Way Women’s Initi ati ve, an organizati on dedicated to

Children can be dismissed from speech therapy with improved arti culati on skills and word intelligibility but sti ll demonstrate high risk for school failure because of unremediated defi cits in lett er-sound associati on and/or poor oral and writt en language skills. This treatment-focused seminar brings together two unique interventi on approaches that can put struggling students on a fast track to classroom success. The interventi ons presented can be used with many student groups including speech delay, auti sm, apraxia of speech, and students learning English.

Building Foundational Literacy Skills The morning session begins with a discussion of the brain’s four processors. Research on early literacy development suggests that targeti ng the orthographic processor fi rst, rather than the phonological processor, may be a more eff ecti ve approach to teaching lett er-sound correlati on and literacy skills. Parti cipants will learn orthographic instructi on (printed cues) and how “starti ng with the lett er” can suddenly bring sounds and words to life for children. This highly successful approach can help students achieve speech and language goals while at the same ti me building a strong literacy foundati on.

Expanding Oral & Written Expression Frustrated with receiving one-word answers or blank looks from students when it comes to describing vocabulary or describing an object or event? The aft ernoon session will explain how the brain functi ons in expanding oral and writt en expression. Based on this knowledge, introduced will be a multi -sensory instructi on approach to target those students who struggle with organizing and expanding their thoughts. Specifi c areas addressed will be oral expression, writi ng from prior knowledge, vocabulary comprehension, defi ning & describing skills, similariti es & diff erences, categorizati on, and more. The ulti mate goal of this seminar is to help parti cipants achieve more therapy goals and in less ti me.

This empowering two-day seminar will examine the current literature on teaching children with developmental challenges to speak. Four leading experts in speech acquisiti on will explore communicati on challenges and their soluti ons associated with auti sm, apraxia of speech, Down syndrome, and other populati ons. The latest research on the neuroscience of speech acquisiti on will be discussed to help parti cipants become more eff ecti ve in treatment planning and technique selecti on.

Also covered will be diff erenti al diagnosis of speech disorders, giving parti cipants the knowledge to select and implement the most eff ecti ve interventi ons. In additi on, the rati onale for incorporati ng word simplifi cati on, systemati c reinforcement, and oral-motor exercises will be discussed to help parti cipants master the process of developing interventi on programs that result in functi onal verbal outcomes. Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a

renowned author and clinician specializing in

language and brain development. Dr. Burns

serves on the faculty of Northwestern University

in the Department of Communicati on Sciences

and Disorders, and has been a consultant to

Chicago area school districts for over 30 years.

She has authored three books, a test, and over

100 book chapters and arti cles on language and

brain development, language disorders, and interventi ons for auti sm,

auditory processing disorders and language disorders.

Tamara S. Kasper, MS, CCC-SLP, BCBA, is a pediatric Speech-Language

Pathologist and Board Certi fi ed Behavior

Analyst who specializes in developing vocal

language skills for children on the auti sm

spectrum. She is the Director of The Center for

Auti sm Treatment in Wisconsin, a center which

provides personalized ABA interventi on plans

for children as well as consulti ng services to

auti sm treatment teams in the US, Canada and

Europe. Ms. Kasper’s publicati ons include the K & K Sign to Talk materials

and Speak with Sign.

Nancy R. Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP, is a leading expert and

internati onal lecturer on the topic of children

with apraxia of speech. Ms. Kaufman is the

Director of the Kaufman Children’s Center

for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor and

Social Connecti ons in West Bloomfi eld, MI.
