Application guidelines• Applications to Amsterdam University College must be submitted entirely online, through our online application

system supported by embark.com. Please read these guidelines carefully before completing and submitting your online application.

• AnydocumentsnotinEnglish,Dutch,GermanorFrenchmustbeaccompaniedbyanofficialtranslation.• Youonlyneedtosubmitscans/digitalversionsofyourqualificationsatthisapplicationstage.Butifyourapplicationis

successfulandyouacceptaplaceatAUCwewillneedpapercopies,officiallycertified,ofyourqualifications,plustheoriginalsoftheofficialtranslationsofanydocumentsnotinEnglish,Dutch,GermanorFrench.

• OneoftheselectioncriteriaforAUCstudentsisacademicexcellence.TheaveragesecondaryschoolGPAofAUCstudentsis≥7.5(Dutchsystem):theseare“good”grades,wellaboveabasicpass.Ifyoufeelthatyouracademicabilityisnotaccuratelyreflectedinyourgrades/yourGPA,andyouarehighlymotivatedtostudyatAUC,youshouldhighlightandexplainthisinyourapplication.YouwillneedtodemonstratethatyoudohavetheabilitytomeettheacademicdemandsoftheAUCprogramme.

EnglishproficiencyrequirementTheAUCprogrammeistaughtinEnglish,andstudentsarerequiredtodoagreatdealofreadingandwritinginEnglish.ItisthereforeessentialthatyouenterAUCwithexcellentskillsinEnglish.IfyouareofferedaplaceatAUCyoumustmeetourrequirementsinEnglishbeforeyoucanstartyourstudies.Ifyoudonot(yet)meetourEnglishrequirements,any offer of a placewillbeconditionalonyourfillingthisdeficiencyandprovidingtheprooftoAUCinadvanceofyourintendedstarting date.Forexample,byattendingasummerschoolandtakingoneofthetestslistedbelow.Ifyoubelongtooneofthefollowingcategories,youdonotneedtoprovideaseparateproofofyourproficiencyinEnglish:• Englishnativespeakers;• StudentswhosesecondaryeducationdiplomathatqualifiesthemforuniversitystudieswastaughtcompletelyinEnglish;• Dutchstudentswithafinalgradeof8orhigherinEnglishontheirVWOdiploma.

AUCmayacceptother,alternative,proofsofproficiency,e.g.gradeof13(sehrgut)inEnglishonaGermanAbiturwhentakenasanachievement/main/intensivecourse;EnglishLanguageGCSE,IGCSEorO-levelatgradeB;InternationalBaccalaureateStandardlevelEnglishatgrade5;EuropeanBaccalaureateEnglishatgrade70%.Ifyouwishtosubmitsuchanalternativeproofofproficiency,youmustgivethedetailsinyourapplication.Remember, if you are offered a place at AUC it is conditional on your meeting our English requirements in the way in which you indicated on your application! For a start in September 2013, you must make sure that the results/proof reach AUC by 15 July so that there is time for you to take a course and/or new test if the results do not meet our requirements.

Mathematics requirementYouareexpectedtoenterAUCwithgoodskillsinmathematics.Youmusthavestudiedmathematicstoexaminationlevelatsecondaryschool,andhaveachievedagoodgrade.Ingeneral,thehigheryourlevelofmaths,thewideryourrangeofoptionsforyourmajor.StudentsneedtoenterAUCwithsufficientmathsskillsfortheirprospectivemajor,astheyalreadystarttotakecoursesthatareappropriatefortheirmajorduringtheirfirstyear.• IntheDutchcontext,youneedtohaveabovegrade7in‘WiskundeB’or‘D’atsecondaryschooltomajorinthesciences,

in‘WiskundeA’or‘B’tomajorinthesocialsciences,andin‘WiskundeC’tomajorinthehumanities.NB:Ifyourgradeisbelow8thenyoumayberequiredtotakeanadditionaldiagnostictesttohelpassessifyoudohavesufficientmathsskills.

• IntheUKcontext,youneedabovegradeCinA-levelmathstomajorinthesciences.GCSEmaths(gradeA)isonlysufficientforamajorinthehumanities.NB:IfAUCisinanywayuncertainaboutyourmathsskillsthenyoumayberequiredtotakeanadditionaldiagnostictesttohelpassesswhethertheyaresufficientforyourdesiredmajor.

• IntheInternationalBaccalaureate,youneedtohavegrade5oraboveinHigherlevelmathstomajorinthesciences,andinStandardlevelmathstomajorinthesocialsciences.Grade5inMathematicalStudiesisonlysufficientforamajorinthehumanities.NB:IfAUCisinanywayuncertainaboutyourmathsskillsthenyoumayberequiredtotakeanadditionaldiagnostictesttohelpassesswhethertheyaresufficientforyourdesiredmajor.

IfyouareofferedaplaceatAUCbuthaveadeficiencyinyourmaths–lowgrade,orinsufficientskillsforyourdesiredmajor–yourplacewillusuallybeconditionalonyourfillingthedeficiencyandsupplyingtheprooftoAUCinadvanceofyourintendedstartingdate.Forexample,byimprovingyourmathsgradesatschool,byattendingasummerschool,etc.ShortsummerschoolsarealsoofferedatAUCinlateAugustfornewstudentswithsmallmathsdeficiencies.Pleasenotethattheseshortsummerschoolscannotfillalargemathsdeficiency:ifyouhavealargedeficiency,youwillneedtofindamoreextensiveorintensivecoursetoimproveyourmathsskills.YoumayalsoberequiredtotakesomeremedialmathsinyourfirstyearatAUC.

Academic interestsItisimportantforustoknowaboutyouracademicambitionsandinterests,andhowtheAUCprogrammecanhelpyoutomeetthem.WealsowanttobesureyouhavereadandconsideredcarefullyalltheinformationavailableonAUC’sacademicprogramme,andhavestartedtothinkaboutthechoicesforyourpersonalstudyprogramme.Beforeyouanswerthesequestions,andbeforeyoustartwritingyourpersonalstatement(seebelow),youshouldread(again!)alltheinformationontheAUCwebsiteaboutouracademicprogramme.Oneofthemostimportantchoicesyouwillmakeisyourchoiceofmajor.AlthoughAUCstudentsdonotconfirmtheirmajoruntiltheendoftheirfirstyear,thechoiceofprospectivemajorheavilyinfluencesthecoursesthatAUCstudentstakeduringtheirfirstyear.Inaddition,theAdmissionsCommitteeassessesapplicationsinthecontextoftheprospectivemajor,inordertoensureastudentiswellmatchedtotheirdesiredprogrammeofstudiesatAUC,andtocreateagoodbalanceofthedifferentmajorswithinthestudentbody.Sopleaseselectyourprospectivemajorcarefully,andcheckifyourlevelofmathsissufficientorifyoumightneedtofilladeficiency(seeinformationaboveaboutmathsrequirements).
