What is Culture?

• Has several different meanings.• Collective answer to: Who am I? How

should I live my life? Where do I fit in the world?

• Set of values and beliefs, norms and customs, and rules and codes that socially defines a group of people, binds them to one another, and gives them a sense of commonality.

Culture

• affects our perceptions.

• affects our verbal and nonverbal language.

What is Intercultural Communication?

• occurs whenever a minimum of two persons from different cultures or microcultures come together and exchange verbal and nonverbal symbols.

• is contextual.

Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm

1. Humans are storytellers.2. Decision making and communication are based on

“good reasons.”3. Good reasons are determined by matters of history,

biography, culture and character.4. Rationality is based in people’s awareness of how

internally consistent and truthful to lived experience stories appear.

5. The world is experienced by people as a set of stories from which to choose among. As we choose among these stories, we live life in a process of continual re-creation.

How Can I Do Well In This Class?

1. Attend all lectures and tutorials.

2. Do all my readings.

3. Engage with ALL the required material.

4. Pay attention and take good notes in lectures and tutorials. Again, a minimum of 20% of both tests will be comprised of things said in lecture that may or may not appear in the powerpoint presentations!

5. Participate to the best of my ability.
