Though Meharg’s numbers are extraordinary, her leadership ismuch more.As a serious educator through sport, she recognizes

Aprogramrichwithawinningtradition,nootherfigureinMarylandfieldhockeyhasexemplifiedthattraditionbetterthanheadcoachMissyMehargassheheadsintoher20thseason.VotedNationalCoachoftheYearanunprecedentedsixtimes,MeharghassolidifiedMaryland’s positionamong the top field hockeyprograms in thenation,leadingtheteamtoback-to-backNCAAChampionshipsforthefirsttimeandtheprogram’sfifthoverallin2005and2006.

Withafirmgrasponnationaltopfiveforatleastadecade,MeharghasledtheTerrapinstofouroftheprogram’sfivenationaltitles,whileservingasanassistantcoachduringtheteam’sfirstrunin1987.In

her19years,theteamhasreachedthenationalsemifinals10times,includingthelastfouryearsinarow,afirstfortheprogram.Marylandhasalsoadvancedtothenationalchampionshipgamesixtimesunderthelegendarycoach.

Competinginthetoughestconferenceinthenation,MeharghasalsomentoredtheTerpstosixACCTournamenttitlesandfiveregularseasoncrowns.Herteamshavealsohadsix20-winseasons,includingthreeinthelastfouryears.

Despiteallthesuccesses,MeharghasnotslowedinhereffortstoluretoptalenttoCollegeParkandmentorthemtosuccess.HerplayershavegarneredthreeHondaAwards,presentedtothenation’smostoutstandingplayer,70All-Americans,sevenACCPlayersoftheYear,sixACCRookiesoftheYear,eightACCTournamentMVP’s,69All-ACCperformersandover100NationalAcademicSquadhonorees.

Meharghasdeveloped40Terrapinswhohavereachedthehighestleveloffieldhockey,with40playerscompetinginternationally,includingfiveplayerswhoaremembersofthe2007U.S.NationalTeam.

DuringhertenureatMaryland,shehasbeeninvolvedinallfacetsofcollegiatefieldhockey.ShecurrentlyservesontheNCAAMid-AtlanticRegionalAdvisoryCommittee.In1996,MehargservedasanassistantcoachasformerTerpAll-AmericanKateKauffman-BeachandtheU.S.squadcompetedintheOlympicGamesinAtlanta.

TheTerpshavebeenrepresentedintheOlympics,thePanAmericanGames,theWorldCup,theOlympicQualifyingTournamentandanumberofotherinternationalcompetitions.In2003,formerTerpAll-AmericansKauffman-Beach,DinaRizzoandKeliSmithparticipatedinthePanAmericanGames.PaulaInfanteparticipatedinthegamesasamemberoftheChileanNationalTeam.RizzoandformerTerrapinsSarahSilvettiandLaurenPowleyhelpedtheU.S.qualifyforthe2006WorldCupthenplacedsixthinthetournament,thesecond-bestshowingsince1994whereMeharg assisted the teamtoabronzemedal.

Embarkingonhis thirdseasononthecoachingstaff,TjerkvanHerwaardenhasbeenwithMarylandduringbothof itschampionshipruns,coming toCollegePark inJulyof2005asanassistant coach. During the summer of 2007, he was named the team’sTechnical Director/Coach.

“Tjerkhashadan incredible impacton the Terps, as we have capturedback-to-back NCAA titles,” said headcoachMissyMeharg.“Hispatienceandability to read tactical adjustments aremajor strengths. His game knowledgeisnotonlyevident in trainingsessionsbutalsoinvideoworkandfundamentalteachingsessions.”

A native of the Netherlands, vanHerwaarden has gained extensivecoachingexperienceandknowledgeofthegamehavingservedasanassistantcoach,headcoachandtechnicaldirectorateveryleveloverthelastdecade.

PriortojoiningtheMarylandcoachingstaff, van Herwaarden had served ashead coach of the Gooische women’steam 2nd Division in the Netherlands,whichisconsideredtohavethebestfieldhockeycompetitionintheworld,since2003.Hismainfocuswasondevelopmentoftechnicalandtacticalskills.

From1999-2003,vanHerwaardenwasanassistantcoachoftheKampong1stLadiesclubteam.KampongreachedthesemifinalsoftheNationalChampionshipinback-to-backyears.Whilewiththatteam,hementoredsomeofthecountry’stopfieldhockeyplayers,whowentontowinasilvermedalattheAthensOlympicsandarecurrentlymembersoftheNationalteam.

VanHerwaardenhasdevotedmuchofhistimeteachingthesportoffieldhockey.HewascoachfortheKNHB,theRoyalDutchfieldhockeyassociation,youthdevelopmentprogramforfiveyearsandwasacoachconductorforthesameorganization,whereheplannedcourseprogramsandtheeducationalstructureforcourseworkrelatedtofieldhockey.

Inthespringof2006,vanHerwaardenwasnamedanassistantcoachoftheUSMen’sNationalFieldHockeyteam,travelingtotournamentsinBermudaandChina.Herwillbeonthesidelinesforthe2007PanAmericanGamesinBrazil,aswell.Hehasalsocoachedthewomen'sU16teamin2006,travelingtohishomecountry,andtheU19teaminArgentinain2007.

In2006,vanHerwaardenwasselectedtoworkwiththeU.S.FieldHockey’snewmen’sRegionalTrainingCenterandwasalsoheadcoachoftheMarylandThunderstickswomen’steam,whichwon2006USFHAElitePerformanceTrainingCenterNationalChampionship.

VanHerwaardenistheownerandco-founderofWorldcampUSA,whichrunsDutchfieldhockeycampsintheUnitedStates,andalsoservesastechnicaldirector.HehasbeenaclinicianforsevenyearsattheNationalFieldHockeyFestivalandisaKNHBLevelAandBlicensedcoach.

VanHerwaardenwasalsoanaccountmanagerforSNSBankintheNetherlandsdatingbackto1999untilleavinghisposttocometoMaryland.HealsowasaguestspeakerattheNationalFieldHockeyCoachesAssociationconventionin2005.HeearnedabusinesseconomicsdegreeatHES,thecollegeforeconomicsinAmsterdam,in1997.

AfterfourseasonsonthesidelinesmentoringtheTerrapingoalkeepersasanassistantcoach,MarybethFreemanwaselevatedtoassociateheadcoachfollowingtheTerps’championshiprunsin2005and2006. FreemanisresponsiblefordevelopingtheMarylandgoalkeepingcoreanddeepdefense,whichhasbeenamongthebestinthenation,rankinginthetopfiveingoalsagainstaverageinthreeofherfourseasonsonthebench,tyingtheschool-recordwith12shutoutsduringtheTerps'2006championshipyear. "Marybeth is unquestionably a top collegiate and national coach," said head coach MissyMeharg."Sheisdetermined,hardworking,knowledgeableandexceedinglyorganized.Shehasfoundthecoachingbalanceforeachwomantoperformtotheirpotential." Amongthegoalkeepersduringhertenure,Freemanproducedtwo-timeNFHCAAll-AmericanKathrynMasson,theonlyTerrapingoalietobenamedtothefirstteam.MassonhasboastedthebestGAAinthecountryineachofthelasttwoseasonsandenters2007withoneofthetopthreecareerGAAinschoolhistory. AsidefromdevelopingtheTerrapingoalkeepers,FreemanalsooverseestheTerps'academicaffairs,NCAAcompliance,travelarrangementsandrecruitingefforts. Afour-yearstarterfortheLadyMonarchs,Freemanwasanintegralpartofateamthatpostedan81-17(.827)recordthroughouthercollegiatecareer,capturingfourColonialAthleticAssociationtitles.Thetwo-timeAll-CAAselectionpostedanimpressive1.17careergoalsagainstaverageanda.760careersavepercentage. Inhersophomoreseasonin2000,FreemanwasselectedtotheNCAAAll-Tournamentteam,helpingOldDominiontoitsninthNCAAChampionshipcrown,and,asasenior,thenetminderledhersquadbacktotheNCAAsemifinals.ShegarneredAll-CAAaccoladesinherfinalcampaignafterregisteringa1.18GAA. Freemanisoneofthefewfieldhockeycoachesinthenationtoproduceinstructionalvideos."BecomingaChampionGoalkeeper,"producedin2003byChampionshipProductions,targetsgoalkeepersandaspiringgoalkeepingcoaches. FreemanhasalsobeeninvolvedwiththeUnitedStatesFieldHockeyAssociationFuturesprogramfor both Marylandand New Jersey.Sheservesassitedirector and headgoalkeeping coachat the Universityof Maryland, whilealso being headgoalkeeping coachfor New Jersey.She also plays aroleincoachingthegoalkeepers andthedefensefortheMarylandThundersticksoftheUSFHAElitePerformanceTrainingCenter. InfanteloggedmanyfirstswhilewearingtheMarylanduniform.TheonlyplayerintheprogramtoreceivetheHondaAwardtwice,shewasalsothefirsttobenamedfirstteamAll-Americanfour-straightyearsandthesecondathleteinateamsportinMarylandAthleticshistorytogarnerfirstteamhonorsfourtimes,aswell.Sheisalsotheonlyfour-timeAll-NCAATournamenthonoree.

InfanteisalsotheonlyTerpinMarylandfieldhockeyhistorytowinaconferenceplayeroftheyearawardmultiple times,garneringACCDefensivePlayerof theYearnodstwice in thefirstthreeyearsofthehonor.

Thefour-timeAll-ACCperformerledMarylandtofour-consecutiveNCAATournamentsemifinalsappearances,afirstinthehistoryoftheprogram.TheTerpsalsoadvancedtotheACCfinalsinherfinaltwoseasons,winningthecrownin2005.

Rankedamongtheall-timeTerrapingreats,InfantefinishedhercareerinCollegeParkwith58careergoalsand139careerpoints,tiedforfifthandrankedseventh,respectively,all-time.Her19goalsasafreshmanin2003isamongthe single-season most prolific scoring yearsall-timeatMaryland.

Infante even left an imprint in the NCAArecord books. Her five goals and 10 pointsin the first round of the NCAA Tournamentversus Delaware were a tournament record.Thefivetalliesalsotiedtheschoolrecordforgoalsingame.

As a defender, Infante’s presence in thebackfieldmadeitoneofthebestinthecountry.The defense was ranked among the top inteamgoalsagainstaveragewhileshewasatMaryland,includingleadingthenationat0.70duringherseniorcampaignandrankedsecondin2006(1.01).TheTerpsrecorded12shutoutsin2006,tyingaschoolrecord.

Onoffense,shewasamongthetoptwogoalscorersineachofherseasonsonthefield,leadingtheteamasafreshmanandsophomore.

AfterMaryland’s2005nationalchampionshiprun,InfantewasawardedtheACC’sprestigiousMaryGarberAward,giventotheconference’stopfemaleathleteoftheyearacrossallsports.ShewastheTerps’firstfemalehonoreesince2001andthefirstTerrapinfieldhockeyplayer.

Completing her degree in physical education and kinesiology, Infante also excelled in theclassroom,earningaspoton theNFHCA’sNationalAcademicSquad twiceandwasonceanAll-ACCAcademichonoree.Shewasalsooneof45athletesintheACCtoreceivetheWeaver-James-CorriganPostgraduateScholarship.

LynchisthefounderanddirectorofWayofChampionsbasedinSantaCruz,Calif.HisexpertiseaidedintheTerps’questofthe1999NCAAandACCtitleruns.HehasalsoworkedcloselywiththeMarylandwomen’slacrosseprogramwhich captured an unprecedented seven-consecutivenationaltitles1995-2001.Marylandwomen’sbasketballandvolleyballteamshavealsousedLynchasaconsultant.

Afterearninghisbachelor’sdegreeinEnglishfromSt.Francis College, Lynch earned his master’s degree andPh.D.inpsychologyfromPennStateUniversity.Inaddition,hehasearnedaPh.D. incomparative religions from theAmericanCollegeofTheology.
