On behalf of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Construction Speci-fications Institute, I would like to extend a warm welcome and a thank you to everyone who is attending the 2009 CVCSI Product Expo and Education Seminars. Our goal is to provide you with the latest information for the most innovative products and ideas in the construction industry. Our hope is that this event will give you the edge over your competition in the year to come by giving you the information you need to create the best projects in the area. Our dedicated committee has worked diligently on this event for a year to bring you the best experience possible. The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) is an individual mem-bership technical society whose core purpose is to improve the process of cre-ating and sustaining the built environment. The Institute provides technical information and products, continuing education, professional conferences, and product shows to enhance communication among all disciplines of non-residential building design and construction and to meet the industry’s need of a common system of organizing construction data. CSI’s more than 15,000 members include architects, engineers, contractors, specifiers of construction products, suppliers of construction products, building owners, and facilities managers. The Central Virginia CSI Chapter offers learning units at monthly din-ner meetings, site tours of local construction projects, and an annual product expo giving the opportunity to informally socialize, network, and discuss top-ics of interest with others in the construction industry. Speakers: Lindsay Check Snoddy, Annette Osso, Shannon Sweeney - 1 HSW (SD)

This panel discussion will focus on the LEED for Schools program from Central Vir-ginia applications to state wide initiatives. LEED for schools projects can reduce building operating expenses, while improving comfort, health, and productivity of the building occupants. This panel will emphasize green building practices, in-troduce the LEED rating systems, and discuss design strategies to optimize site, water consumption, materials, energy use, and indoor environment. The panel will use Central Virginia case studies as examples of state wide strategies being

used to improve the learning environments of our children.

This panel discussion will focus on a holistic approach to green your business decisions, projects, products, and actions. While many companies claim to have gone green to keep up with the latest trends, what are some of the hard choices that you can make that really have an impact on the local environment. It is easy to say that the problems are too large for one person to impact, but in reality, if each person does a little, the whole will be greater than its sums. Join this panel of experts that have made a difference as they discuss the daily decisions that

their companies have made to improve the environment in Central Virginia.

8:00 am - 9:00 amRegional Blueprint for Energy Efficient Building

Speaker: Ben Taube - 1 HSW (SD)

The Southeastern region of the United States is at a critical turning point in its development. With twice the population growth of the country overall, the demand for energy is projected to increase by 30% in the next 20 years. Although the Southeast has long been forgotten in terms of energy efficiency policy initiatives, the recent development of the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) brings about tre-mendous opportunities. SEEA’s goal is to deploy cost-effective energy efficiency measures to reduce the anticipated growth in electricity de-mand in the region by 50% in the next two decades. This presentation will describe the steps that SEEA is taking to mobilize regional leaders in the public and private sectors to develop a “regional blueprint” for energy efficiency building. Key activities by SEEA include work with the large utilities to instill the benefits of creating and incentivizing energy efficiency. In addition, a public coalition of Southeast Gover-nors has been created to develop a regional energy efficiency goal for all 11 SEEA states. These programs and others focused on technology deployment and public utilities commissions have proven effective methods to drive the adoption of energy efficiency in the Southeast. This presentation will discuss the creation of the Southeast Alliance and programming to impact the fast growing and consuming South-

eastern U.S.

Speaker: Jason Fisher - 1 HSW (SD)Mr. Fisher is a licensed master electrician and is a North American Board of Cer-tified Energy Practitioners (www.NABCEP.org) Certified Solar PV Installer™. His seminar will discuss the design of small to medium sized utility interconnected photovoltaic systems for use in buildings. Focus will be placed on engineering for electrical code compliance and maximum efficiency. Examples of successful system applications will also be shown, including some notable past projects such as Greenpeace, GSA, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, The Pen-tagon, The US State Department, and The White House.

Central Virginia Construction Specifications Institute will be hosting the2009 Middle Atlantic Region Conference in historical Charlottesville,VA on October 8-11. The conference will be held at the Omni CharlottesvilleHotel, located on the city’s downtown pedestrian mall at the heart of the city.Our conference theme is Sustaining Mr. Jefferson’s Legacy, Designingfor the Future.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city of Charlottesvilleis rich with history. Three of our nation’s founding presidents lived in the area, James Madison, James Monroe, and of course Mr. Jefferson. There are many significant historical buildings dotted throughout the area, but none areso revered as Jefferson’s University of Virginia. The UVA grounds are amagnificent testimony to Jefferson’s aesthetics and ingenuity. The Universityrotunda is often recognized as one of the most important buildings in United States history.

The goal of our conference is to look at the University’s past, and how that might shape its future. We will be focusing on two very large University projects thatpromise to be moving in a more sustainable direction. One of theseprojects promises to look into the healing power of building technology, the other, into how a building might promote learning and environmental responsibility.
