Head of the Class
Courtney Yehl has been named valedictorian of Salamanca’s graduating Class of 2014. Courtney graduates with a 96.72 average and a 100.57 index and will r eceive a NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors. Her course load this year consisted of JCC calculus, JCC molec-ular biology, freshman lit-erature and fr eshman composition. Courtney is the daughter of Bob and Debbie Yehl.
Courtney will be attending Ithaca College where she will be studying physical therapy. She is receiving the Ithaca Merit Scholarship.
Courtney has been v ery active in extra curr iculars. Her extra curr iculars include President of the Student Council for two years and Vice President for four years. She also is a member of the National Honor Society; Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.
Courtney participated in Drama Club for four y ears along with jazz band for five years. She also was involved in varsity tennis for two years. Other hon-ors bestowed on Cour tney this y ear are Rotary Student of the Month for October and Business Student of the Month for October.
Matthew Crandall was named salutatorian of the Class of 2014. He is the son of Rober t and Karen Crandall. Matthew will be attending University of S outh Carolina in the fall wher e he will r eceive the Woodrow Scholarship and the George A. Brizzolara Jr. Scholarship.
Matthew, with a 96.79 average and a 100.42 index, has successfully completed a challenging program of study inc luding JCC accounting, JCC calculus, JCC molecular biology and fresh-man literature. Matthew will r eceive a NYS Regents Diploma with A dvanced Designation with Honors.
Matthew has had an active four years in high school serving as editor-in-chief of the 2014 Yearbook and editor of the school newspaper in 2013. Matthew is a member of National Honor Society, Science Honor S ociety, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor S ociety, Business/ Marketing Honor Society and ser ved as presi-dent of DECA this year along with being the treasurer of Student Council for three years.
Sports was also an integral part of Matthew’s high school c areer. He par ticipated in varsit y baseball for four y ears, basketball for two years and soccer for one y ear. Other honors/awards that Matthew received this year are December Rotary Club Student of the Month, Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau Student of the week and DECA State Champion.

Claire Dowdall has been named Catta-raugus-Little Valley’s Class of 2014 vale-dictorian. She is the daughter of Ronald and Wendy Dowdall of Little Valley. Claire will be graduating with a weighted cumulative average of 101.2 percent.
Claire is a member of the N ational Honor Society. She has served as both the Student Council tr easurer and secr etary and as the vice pr esident and co-pr es-ident of her Class Council thr oughout high school. Claire has been the treasurer of the Music Club and has been a stand-out member of EC OS (Environmental Conservation Organization of S tudents) Club serving as their tr easurer for fi ve years. Claire has also been a member of the girls’ varsity soccer and track team for the last two years.
Outside of school, Claire has been active in var ious community service ac-tivities which include boys’ varsity soccer statistician, Allegany S tate Park March for Parks, serving Salamanca’s Absolut Care Nursing Home, and Cattaraugus County Special Olympics. Claire has also been a part of community trash clean-ups and tree planting.
Claire will be attending Jamestown Community College under a full USA Scholarship with a major in Chemistr y and a minor in Art and Design.

Zachary Jackson, son of Randy and Margher ita Jackson, has been named the valedictorian of the Class of 2014 at Ran-dolph Central School. Zach’s extracurricular activities include soccer (First Team, Player of the Year, Off ensive Player of the Year), track (First Team, participant in NYSPHAA State Championship Tournament’s 800-meter run, broke 800- and 1600-meter run school records set in 1980s), Ski Club, junior varsity basketball, Impact Club and Government Interns. He is a member of the ERUMC Youth Group.
Zach’s awards include National Honor S ociety, Highest Average awards, Student of the Month awards, Honor Roll, Student of the Year – JCC 2013, dean’s list – JCC part-time students, JCC Mathematics Contest Excellence Award, Boys’ State participant 2013, Alfred University Scholastic Recog-nition Award, Scholar Athlete of the Week Award, USMC Scholastic Excellence Award, RIT Computing Medal Award, Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau Youth of the Week 2013, and Jamestown Business College – Leadership Launch 2013.
Joseph McIntyre, son of Michael and Cy nthia Mc-Intyre, has earned the honor of salutator ian of the Class of 2014 at Randolph Central School. Joe’s extracurricular activities include martial arts, Future Business Leaders of America, piano, Lego Robotics, Spanish Club and Drama Club. He is a member of the YMCA, Phi Th eta Kappa Honor Society and Rocky’s Family Karate.
Joe’s awards include National Honor S ociety, Senior Class President, FBLA co-President, Spectrum Martial Arts Team Captain, Boys’ State, graduation fr om JCC in May 2014 with an Associate ’s Degree in Math and Science with highest honors, Business F irst 2014 All-Western New York Academic Team, Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau Citizenship Award, United S tates Math and Science Award 2013, fi rst degree Black Belt, Martial Arts World Title 2013.
Zachary Jackson Joseph McIntyre
Evan Stern has been named Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Class of 2014 salutator ian. He is the son of N eil and Crystal Stern of Cattaraugus. Evan will be graduating with a
weighted cumulative average of 100.15 per-cent.
Evan is a member of the National Honor Society and was named a Junior Lion in February 2014. He is also an active member varsity track and varsity soccer, in which he served as team c aptain for one y ear. Additionally, Evan has play ed the trumpet in the high school band for four y ears, and is a member of the senior chor us this year. Evan has also contr ibuted as a member of the drama c lub, boy’s acapella group, and trumpet ensemble.
Outside of school, Evan has maintained a strong membership to his church, serving as a member of the Bible Q uizzing Team, church usher, church soundboard crew, vacation bible school v olunteer, and has participated in mission tr ips to P eru and Charleston, W. Va. He has also volunteered at the loc al Track and F ield Day for the PTA.
Evan will be attending Houghton College for studies in Biolog y with a con-centration in Environmental Studies.

Ashley Charlesworth, the daughter of John and S herry Charlesworth, has been named as the 2014 Ellicottville Central School valedictorian, with a weighted aver-age of 112.48. Ashley will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors.
Th roughout high school, Ashley has r e-peatedly been listed on the High Honor Roll and has maintained a spot in the “Top 5” in her c lass for four years. Th is year she was named an outstanding student in eco-nomics, Niagara University French 104, and JCC music theory. Ashley has earned these awards and grades all while taking 29 college credits through GCC, Niagara University and the JC C College Connec-tions program at Ellicottville Central. Her attention to studies in these c lasses has re-sulted in her r eceiving numerous honors which include the Rensselaer P olytechnic Institute (RPI) Rensselaer Medal for dis-tinguished work mathematics and science , and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Innovation and Creativity Award.
Ashley has been an activ e participant in a wide var iety of activities thr oughout the past four y ears. At Ellicottville Cen-tral School she participated in the Foreign Language Club, ESPRA (Ellicottville Students for the P reservation of Reading in America), jazz band, band, softball and National Honor S ociety. As a member of the band, Ashley played at 17 S olo Festi-vals, participated in area All-State and per-formed in fi ve All-County concerts.
Beyond Ellicottville Central S chool, Ashley has been a gymnast for 13 years; par-ticipating in the O lean-Bradford YMCA Flames Gymnastics Program. Ashley was named the New York State Level 8 Beam, Floor and All-Ar ound Champion in the YMCA Gymnastics League two times. In 2013, she was named the Most Dedic at-ed Gymnast and the y ear before that was awarded the fi rst Gymnast of the Month for her team.
Ashley is also v ery passionate about her work as a volunteer for diff erent organiza-tions, which inc lude the Amer ican Can-cer Society’s Relay for Life , 4-H and the March of Dimes. As a testament to her desire to help others, this past y ear she created a fundraiser with her g ymnastics team which raised over $3,400 to go to the American Cancer Society.
Next year, Ashley has enr olled in the pre-pharmacy program at the Univ ersity of Pittsburgh at Bradfor d, where she has been named a r ecipient of the P anther Scholarship for O ut-of-State students. While at college, Ashley will continue her involvement in gymnastics at the YMCA, and compete in the recently added masters’ program. After her attendance at the Uni-versity of Pittsburgh at Bradford, she hopes to attend Ohio State University’s Pharma-cy School.
Mckenzie Robinson, the daughter of Ted and Tracy Robinson, has been named the 2014 Ellicottville Central School salu-tatorian, with a weighted average of 111.69. She will graduate with an A dvanced Re-gents Diploma with Honors.
Mckenzie has taken an incredible variety of classes throughout high school inc lud-ing, but not limited to: JCC statistics, JCC calculus, JCC English - composition, JCC writing in literatur e, JCC ceramics, JCC music theory, GCC physics, honors U .S. history and English, and Niagara Univer-sity French 103 and 104. She has been rec-ognized as an outstanding student in var i-ous English classes, French, JCC statistics, high school band and history.
Beyond the c lassroom, Mckenzie has been involved with Ellicottville S tudents for the Preservation of Reading in Amer-ica (ESPRA), Foreign Language Club, National Honor S ociety, jazz band and peer tutoring. She has been a par ticipant in Odyssey of the Mind since fi fth grade and has gone onto regional, state and world fi nals. During her senior y ear, she helped to coach an OM team of four th and fi fth graders. During her study halls, Mckenzie helped in Mrs. Bower’s kindergarten and fi rst grade c lassrooms. A dedicated writer, Mckenzie has par ticipated in the Catta-raugus/Allegany County Secondary Prin-cipals’ Angelo Melaro Writing Contest all four years of high school, and, in 2013, she earned fourth place for the 11th grade divi-sion.
Mckenzie is also a successful author. She has six books published online , where she has reached thousands of readers and fans.
Th ese novels include “If I Matter,” a story that has gained widespr ead popularity among teenagers. In addition to being an author, Mckenzie is a member of a writing group which off ers critique, editing, graph-ic design, advertising and support services to young and budding authors. Th is group also aims to cr eate collaborations between writers throughout the world.
After graduation, Mckenzie is going to attend Kenyon College in Gambier , Ohio for English (with a concentration in cr e-ative writing), psychology, and politic al philosophy. Mckenzie has intentions to eventually attend law school.

Lindsey Smith, daughter of David and Julia Smith, is the valedictor ian of the West Valley Central School Class of 2014 with a weighted average of 100.92 percent.
Lindsey has completed sequences in Math, English, and Spanish. She has taken several Jamestown Comm unity College courses offered at West Valley including Microsoft Computer Applic ations, Calculus I, Calculus I I, Accounting and Fundamentals, Economics, Personal Finance, English Composition 1510 and English Composition 1530.
Lindsey was a member of N ational Junior Honor S ociety as a fr eshman and has been a member of N ational Honor Society since her sophomore year. She was a member of Student Council for one year and Shared Decision Making for her junior and senior years. She was also c lass presi-dent for her fr eshman and sophomor e years.
Throughout high school Lindsey has participated in color guar d for four y ears and the school m usicals for thr ee years. Lindsey played soccer for f ive years, track for four years and bowling for four y ears. She was captain of the gir ls bowling team for her senior y ear. Lindsey is a S cholar Athlete Honorable Mention.
She has also contr ibuted to the com-munity by volunteering at the Buffalo City
Mission, helping at the P ARP Carnival, and helping at Vacation Bible S chool. Lindsey will be attending Villa Maria College in the fall as an A cademic Excellence Tier I Scholarship winner. She will be pursuing a degr ee in Inter ior Design.
Francis Cardamone, son of Terri Cardamone and Fred Hauri, is the salutato-rian for 2014 with a w eighted average of 100.18 percent.
Francis has f inished sequences in Math, Science, Spanish, English, Business, and Social Studies. Through his time at West Valley, he has completed se veral colleges courses through Jamestown Comm unity College, including: Micro Computer Applications, Personal Finance, Contemporary Economics, Accounting Fundamentals, English 1510, English 1530, Calculus 1 and Calculus 2. In addition, he
completed AP Biology.Throughout high school, Frank has par-
ticipated in a variety of extracurricular activi-ties, including Academic Challenge for six years, where he ser ved as c aptain for four years. He has been a member of the school Ski Club for six years. He acted in the school musical program for thr ee years, playing a lead role each year.
He participated in trac k and f ield for three years, soccer for two years, and bowling for two years. Outside of school, he was a member of Upwar d Bound for thr ee years, has been in the volunteer fire department for two years, and has v olunteered at Vacation Bible School for six years.
Frank has been a member of N ational Junior Honor Society for two years, National Honor Society for thr ee years and was recently recognized with the S cholastic Excellence Award. He was also named Top Scholar for West Valley Central at the 2014 Academic Big 30. He was a competitor in the Geography Bee in 2010, representing West Valley in the state-le vel competition in Albany. He w orks part-time as a c ashier in Tops Markets. Utilizing the P rovost Scholarship, HESC STEM Scholarship, and the 2014 S eries Scholarship for A cademic Excellence, he will attend SUNY Univ ersity at Buffalo this fall wher e he will pursue a degree in Biomedical Sciences.
