CHAS RAY KRIDERFalse Negative SAFOTO Web Galleries Monograph Curated by Michael Mehl

Chas Ray Krider’s photographs reside at the edge of that distinct realm of art where mysterious pursuits and embellished rumors intersect with the erotic thrill of voyeurism. His images illustrate arcane erotic narratives that derive their look and feel from classic noir cinema and pulp fiction. There’s always a story in progress. The staged scenarios depict a heightened awareness of sexual anticipation, yet, they do so with an impudent sense of humor that lightens the tone of each image. As in the best examples of pulp, there’s always something significant that just happened or is about to happen, and the various props spread throughout each scene are clues that intend to let us in on the story. Krider’s first monograph Motel Fetish was published in 2003 by Taschen. A second book Do Not Disturb was published in 2007 by La Musardine, in Paris. In 2014 a third book, Dirty Rendezvous published by Goliath Books of Berlin. The three books form what Chas Ray considers to be The Motel Trilogy. With the conclusion of the trilogy Krider is exploring other themes, other styles. Chas Ray lives in Columbus OH with his wife and small dog Elvis.

–Chance is a good guide. While walking my little dog around the alleys near my studio, I came upon a large pile of trash. Next to the pile of trash was a chair. I knew the chair would make a good prop, so I returned to my studio, got the car, and went back for the chair. Upon my return, I noticed a man-nequin head buried in the pile. As I pulled the head I was surprised to find more than just a head, an armless torso and legs were attached. With the found objects loaded in the car, I returned to the studio and placed the chair in a corner with the mannequin in a sitting position. I photographed the set up. The resulting image suggested further exploration, a possible series of live subjects photo-graphed in the corner with the chair. Over a six month period, I made many portraits of friends and models. The parameters for the series were the use of the chair within the defined corner space. As the series progressed, and as new subjects were photographed, the space was re-painted different colors so that over time the color palette would shift adding variation to the series. As I looked at the images over time, I realized that if I played around with them, I could create a variety of digital renderings for each image. So again, by chance, just as I found the chair, I came upon the notion of a False Negative, a digital treatment I could apply to parts of each image. –Chas Ray Krider
