About the Seattle Design Festival
Presented by Design in Public, the Seattle Design Festival is the region’s largest design event, bringing together the public, designers, community groups, businesses, and civic leaders, to inform and inspire an interdisciplinary public dialogue around the role of design in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Seattle.
About POWER
The seventh annual Seattle Design Festival’s fourteen days of provocative design events and installations explore the theme of POWER. Who has the power? Who must we empower? How do the powerful and powerless work together? What power does design have to drive positive change? How should the Seattle design community use its own power? Please join us in showing up, shouting out, and pushing for change.

Design DiscussionsThe Seattle Design Festival Design Discussions are a series of curated interactive workshops and panel discussions exploring the POWER of design. These discussions will bring together technology design leaders, design educators, artists, activist and urbanists to examine how design thinking can amplify, inform and inspire POWERful change for individuals and humanity as a whole.
Knowledge is POWER Presented by Design in PublicWednesday, September 13 / 6PM – 9PMDLR Group 51 University St. #600, Seattle WA 98101
Our world is always advancing through new technology, a more interconnected global society, and larger challenges that humanity faces everyday. As our society shifts, it’s important to prepare ourselves and the next generation to think critically and creatively when confronted with such rapidly changing landscapes. How we teach ourselves and others about what design is and how design works to solve problems is a key step to preparing for the future.
This Design Discussion focuses on bringing together a diverse group of designers and educators willing to share their experiences teaching design and interdisciplinary art and their perspectives on how creative problem solving knowledge is POWER. Expect a collaborative night of discussing what knowledge really means, how we might define design, and working through examples of how to apply design thinking Knowledge is POWER PANELISTSSergio Daliva | Universidad Autonoma MetropolitanaRobert Bonniol | MODE Architectural, Inc.George Zatloka | DesignArt and Technology StudioARTiFACTS CollectiveCarol Rashawnna | K-Love4art + Gallery 110Camella Cooper | ARTifACTS CollectiveBeverly Naidus | UW Tacoma Facilitator: Celine Rosak | Design Thinking & Innovation Collective

Presented by Design in PublicTuesday, September 19 / 6PM – 9PMCenter for Architecture & Design 1010 Western Ave., Seattle, WA 98104
This discussion and interactive workshop will look at how designers bring human-centered design thinking to foster empathy and provide solutions to people experiencing homelessness, architecture for refugees and poverty alleviation. Panelists with expertise and experience in these areas will explore several aspects of design initiatives aimed at elevating marginalized communities and a thoughtful discussion on the challenges of existing power structures that aim to oppress rather than elevate our most vulnerable citizens. Expect a night filled with inspiring examples of how design thinking works to help emPOWER communities, and an opportunity to apply design
thinking yourself.

Technology Design Discussions Presented by MicrosoftFriday, September 15 / 6PM – 9PMSeattle Central Library, Microsoft Auditorium 1000 4th Ave, Seattle WA 98104
Part 1: Humanity-Centered Design: How Ethics Will Change AI, 6PM – 7PM
Thought leaders from Seattle’s global design industry will share their perspectives on the challenges and possible solutions to designing ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) that empowers humans, helps us achieve more and improves our world. Today, we talk about AI only from a technological perspective: What’s powering its functionality? Instead, let’s shift the conversation to how AI changes lives. Viewing AI through a lens that focuses on its impact on humans can highlight what using AI really means to us. This discussion will look at how to keep humans in the loop and in control, the role of design in systems that build themselves and what it takes to build inclusive technology that embraces users of all abilities and access levels.
Part 2: Inclusion by Design, 7:30PM-8:30PM
Human diversity: Can it be leveraged to create meaningful experiences for billions of people? When designing experiences, businesses constantly face this question. Human beings have been at the center of design practices for a long time, yet we have done a poor job of adapting our experiences to their unique needs. How can we move from one size fits all, to one size fits one? By sharing the experience of experts across a wide variety of domains this panel will explore how empathy and diversity can fuel innovation.

Futurama Redux is a project/exhibition which is authored by Smarter than Car and shown in Seattle upon invitation of Coltura as local community partner and produced by DLR Group.
