Convenience, health and wellness drive Southeast Asian F&B market
Market Introduction
Asia’s food and beverage industry is vibrant and
expanding, with revenues amounting to 41.75 billion in
2018. The market is mainly driven by growth in
convenience foods and health-oriented products.
Key to successful product formulation specially for the
Southeast Asian market rests on the switch to natural
ingredients especially for regional flavours; the reduction
of salt, sugar, fat, and artificial ingredients;
functionalising products with complementing healthful
ingredients, and production of minimally processed food.
The industry is also expected to operate within the
principles of sustainability in order to make the least
impact on nature and environment. Companies will also
take more concrete actions toward advancing
transparency, food safety, and waste reduction.
Some of these actions will be apparent in the packaging
sector. In 2019, the food packaging market is projected
to reach a value of $305,955.1 million; alongside this
growth is mounting waste. The call to ban non-recyclable
single-use packaging is currently a major step toward this
route.
To effect “zero waste”, packaging companies and their
stakeholders, along with organisations and governments,
are building partnerships to address the waste burden
through long-term solutions such as closed loop systems.
This is especially vital to Asia which is responsible for
nearly half of the world’s plastic leakage. China is the
biggest source of plastics waste, but Indonesia, the
Philippines, and Thailand are high on the list.
“Less is more” has also become an industry catchphrase
urging companies to use less material or packaging
where possible. Smaller-size packaging for instance, is
not only a sustainable solution, it addresses food and
beverage portion control. Bio-based packaging, smart
packaging and other green solutions not only reduce
waste, but allow manufacturers to increase product shelf
life and create brand value.
In format, flexible packaging such as resealable pouches
with caps or zip closures, is highly utilised for prepared
foods, sweet and savoury snack foods, and bakery
products, for convenience and shelf life extension. While
demand for milk and dairy products, fruit juices, and
alcoholic beverages, is driving growth in aseptic
packaging, which is forecast to reach USD 76.8 billion by
2025, according to Converged Markets.
In Southeast Asia, the processing equipment segment is
predicted to reach USD1,152 million in 2023 as it grows
at a CAGR of 4.7% over the next five years, reports
Research and Markets. Whether starting out, expanding,
or streamlining, manufacturers look to invest in
machinery and solutions that give them the most
flexibility, enable small or continuous batch processing,
and more importantly to be able to comply with safety
and hygiene standards.
Global food automation is expected to reach a value of
USD12.26 billion by 2022. But F&B processing companies
in Southeast Asia tend to put this off due to costly
technology and training, and so are missing out on the
depth at which industrial automation solutions, whether
semi-automation, can help increase productivity.
Investing in Industry 4.0 tools for connectivity and data
collection, then expanding digital capabilities as needed
is the way SMEs are expected move to full automation.
