Dear Fellows and members,
Time flies. There have been a lot of activities going on over
the past six months. In February, on behalf of the College, I
attended the Spring Faculty Reception of LKS Faculty of
Medicine, the Media Spring luncheon organized by HKAM
and a seminar on LBGT organized by the Constitutional and
Mainland Affairs Bureau.
On 28 Mar, I joined a dinner along with HKAM’s
representatives and other College Presidents hosted by Prof.
Sophia Chan, the Secretary of Food and Health Bureau, discussing how the non-locally
trained doctors and dentists could undertake the training programme of Colleges.
Regarding dentistry, Prof. Chan was reminded that since there is no limited registration
available yet in DCHK, all dentists should be fully registered in HK in order to become
trainees of CDSHK.
Our Spring scientific meeting was successfully held on 5 May. The theme was
“Evidence-based restorative dentistry” and I would like to thank all the international and
local speakers as well as the members of the Scientific Meeting Committee which is
chaired by Prof. W.K Leung.
On 2 July, I attended the plaque unveiling ceremony of the establishment of SZ-HK
Specialist Training Centre which was located in the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen
Hospital (HKU-SZH). I also had a chance to discuss any potential collaboration between
our College and HKU-SZH with Prof Homer Tso, the COS of Dental in HKU-SZH.
On 13 July, I attended the Inaugural Ceremony of Macao Academy of Medicine (MAM).
While only a few medical doctors with oral and maxillofacial training are eligible to be the
fellows of MAM at the moment, I was told that dentists in various subspecialties would be
included in the near future.

In order to enhance professionalism and ethics among Fellows and trainees, HKAM has
recently established a new committee named Professionalism and Ethics Committee to
promote professionalism and ethics as well as ethical issues pertaining to the practice of
specialty medicine and dentistry, public policy and other corporate activities. I would like
to thank Dr. Law Yee Hung, Yolanda who represents our College to serve in the Committee
from 2019-2022.
There is also a Social Subcommittee newly formed under the House Committee of HKAM
and a series of social activities have already been organized from Aug 2019 to Mar 2020. I
would like to thank Dr. Tom Ho who serves as one out of the 6 members of the
Subcommittee.
Last but not the least, the 4th AMM-AMS-HKAM Tripartite Congress cum 53rd
Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine & Hong Kong Primary Care Conference 2019
will be held in Hong Kong on 6-8 December 2019. Please mark your diary.

Spring Scientific Meeting - 5 May 2019 (Sunday) “Evidence-based Restorative Dentistry” was the theme for this Spring Scientific Meeting.
The lecture theatre at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital was packed with over 270
participants.
Professor Masashi Miyazaki, Director and
Chair, Department of Operative Dentistry,
Nihon University School of Dentistry
started the day by providing an overview
regarding basic technologies of direct
restorative materials and their clinical
effectiveness. He enriched his
presentations by sharing video clips
regarding handling of resin composites,
demonstrating the full spectrum of
applications of the material in clinical practice. At the afternoon session, Prof. Miyazaki
walked the audiences through the importance of various adhesive systems in clinical
dentistry and in particular discussed their corresponding bonding durability.
Professor Michael F. Burrow, Discipline
Coordinator, Operative Dentistry and
Prosthodontics, The University of Hong Kong
guided the evidence through current clinical
evidence for longevity of resin composite
and glass ionomer cement (GIC) restorations
placed in load bearing cavities. He
highlighted how contemporary changes
were attempted to modify GICs for load
bearing direct restoration. The
corresponding evidence was reviewed and suitability of
particular types of GIC for specific defects in posterior teeth was presented.

Professor Yu-Kang Tu, Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, College of Public Health, National Taiwan University commenced the afternoon session by providing the audience a clear update on the topic of evidence-based dentistry. Walking us through contemporary research, he clarified the importance of why rigorous study designs, sophisticated statistical analyses, and objective evidence translation were so important for evidence-based personalized dental care. The challenges of information explosion in the current digital era upon this subject were also covered.
The three distinguished speakers concluded the afternoon session over a Panel Discussion Chaired by Dr. Daniel Fang and myself. Many attendees enjoyed the intellectual exchanges until the last minute of this very successful one-day event.
